Book England Before and After Wesley The Evangelical Revival and Social Reform

Download or read book England Before and After Wesley The Evangelical Revival and Social Reform written by J. Wesley Bready and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Wesley and Karl Marx, unmistakably, are the two most influential characters of all modern history." So argues J. Wesley Bready in this classic statement on the social significance of the original evangelical movement in Great Britain. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, at least, evangelical religion-as found in the life and teaching of John Wesley-had profound consequences that were anything but an opiate of the people (contra the teachings of Karl Marx). Instead, "vital religion" proved itself to be powerfully transformative, not only in the personal lives of its converts, but also in the deepest fibre of their social and political lives. J. Wesley Bready's careful documentation of the profound social and political influence of John Wesley's preaching and teaching will, for many readers today, prove to be a convincing demonstration of the transformative power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The power and scope of this evangelical Christian influence was extraordinary: from education to health care; from the needs of the poor and orphans, to prison reform and the founding of democratic institutions; from the promotion of good reading to an end to cruelty to animals (and founding of the RSPCA). All of these, and more, are the hallmarks and outward manifestations of a vital Christian faith. Nothing could illustrate more convincingly that "faith without works is dead" and, contrary to Marx, that the gospel of Jesus Christ more typically serves as a sharp awakening rather than an opiate of the people. Rev. Dr. J. Wesley Bready (1887-1953) was a Canadian-born scholar and author of numerous books, including Wesley and Democracy (1939), Lord Shaftesbury (1900), This Freedom-Whence? (1942), and Faith and Freedom: The Roots of Democracy (1946). He held degrees from Queen's University, University of Toronto, Columbia University, and University of London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Real Christian: The Life of John Wesley fills a void in available books in Wesleyan studies by providing a brief, solid biography that focuses on Wesley himself. While exploring Wesley's ancestry, birth, death, and every major biographical and theological event between, Collins also explores the theme of John Wesley's spiritual growth and maturation. Wesley came to the conclusion that real Christians are those whose inward (and outward) lives have been transformed by the bountiful sanctifying grace of God -- what he termed real Christianity--and this he strove to obtain for himself. Real Christianity, as Wesley understood it, embraces both works of piety and mercy, the person and the social.

Book On the Trail of John Wesley

Download or read book On the Trail of John Wesley written by J. Keith Cheetham and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2003 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley (1703-91) founded the Methodist movement, initially an offshoot of the Church of England, which grew into a major church in its own right. In doing so Wesley brought about the greatest religious revival of the 18th century. The name Methodism derives from the methodical approach Wesley adopted from the Bible for developing personal devotion. His decision to employ lay preachers and preach outdoor sermons on the Word of God to a mainly working-class population angered the Church of England. It led to a split and in 1795, after John Wesley's death, the Methodist Church was established. Wesley travelled over 250,000 miles across Britain, mainly on horseback, preaching over 40,000 sermons during his lifetime, often facing fierce opposition and persecution. He also spent two years in Georgia, USA, and was author and publisher of much religious material. His work and preaching was known to every branch of society. Today, the Methodist Church has spread to almost every country in the world with a membership of some 70 million. In this account, Keith Cheetham traces Wesley's life story and gives detailed information on important Methodist heritage sites and places visited by the great preacher and evangelist. Over 170 places to visit in Britain and Georgia, USA One general map, 7 location maps of Wesley's London, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and 1 of Georgia Line drawings plus cross-references to maps throughout text On the Trail of John Wesley is a thorough guide to the life and places connected with a man whose work and religious achievements changed the religious face of Britain and established a worldwide Methodist Church.

Book excerpt: The year 2003 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley. Wesley did not originate the Evangelical Revival, which was transatlantic in its origins, but became the most energetic, original and pragmatic of the evangelical leaders, founding - even if it was not his intention - a world-wide Protestant Communion. This text seeks to set Wesley firmly in his historical context, analyzing his life, practice and theology. It shows that while there were many Methodisms, there was a central core of spirituality and style which had a great influence on the artisan groups of men (and women), providing stability, purpose and meaning, and enabling nobodies to become somebodies.

Download or read book Life of John Wesley 1793 written by John Wesley and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley bequeathed his manuscripts to three trusted colleagues with the expectation that they would prepare, write, and publish a suitable biography after his death. An ex-Methodist preacher, John Hampson, beat them into print with an unflattering portrait of Methodism's founder. The book was published in June of 1791, only three months after Wesley was buried. To counter this publication, Thomas Coke and Henry Moore rushed into print an "authorized" and more flattering account. Their Life of John Wesley was first published in April 1792, and the authors had high hopes for their 542-page book. By showing "how faithfully, zealously, and prudently Wesley labored" may thereby be more abundantly stimulated to be followers of him, as he was of Christ."A year later the first and only known American edition was published in Philadelphia by John Dickins who only three years earlier had begun the publishing house for the Methodist Episcopal Church. Twenty-three know editions/printings kept the book available in England until 1864. We are pleased to reprint the first American printing by Philadelphia printer Parry Hall for John Dickins in 1793.
