Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Randolph William randolph, gentleman, of Tur key Island, born in 1650, was a native of Warwickshire in England, as his tombstone declares. Of his ancestry nothing is certam known. The cause and the time of his coming to Virginia have been forgotten. The Henrico records show that in 1678 he was clerk of Hen rico County, a man of substance, and married already to Mary Isham; that in 1685 he was Captain William Randolph and Justice of the Peace; that in 1706 he conveyed to son Henry land called by the name of Curles, with Longfield, being all that land at Curles lately belonging to Nathaniel Bacon, Jr. That in 1709 Col. William Randolph of Turkey Island made his will, which mentioned seven sons and two daughters; and finally that in 1711 he died. Turkey Island, just above the junction of the James and Appomattox rivers, lies in a re gion which has sharply attracted the attention of men. In 1675 Nathaniel Bacon lived near by at his plantation called Curles, and in that year Bacon's famous rebellion gave bloody as sociations to the place. About one hundred years afterwards Benedict Arnold, then a gen eral in the British service, made a destructive raid up the James River which drew all eyes to the spot. Neither of these disturbances, his torical as they are, made the region nearly so famous as it became on June 30, 1862, when fifty thousand northern troops, beaten, weary, and disorganized, converged at Malvern Hill and Turkey Island bridge, and the next day fought a battle which saved their army, and perhaps their cause, without a thought or a care for the dust Of forgotten Randolphs on which two armies were trampling in the cradle of their race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Randolph of Roanoke, 1773-1833: A Biography Based Largely on New Material The biography (so-called) of Randolph by Lemuel Sawyer is but a mere memoir; though by no means negligible, because Sawyer served for many years in the House of Representatives with Randolph, and, while sharing the prejudice against him, felt by all the fervid Jeffersonians, after the breach between him and Jefferson, was an ardent but not an indiscriminate admirer of Randolph's genius; and was an admirer, in many respects, of his character too. But, even if Sawyer's book were a much more extensive one, he had a failing which is enough to destroy, or all but destroy, the value of any book, brief or otherwise; that is, gross inaccuracy. He was, we are told by John Quincy Adams, a writer of poems and plays, as well as a Congressman, and no playwright or poet ever deliberately took more license with historical facts than Sawyer did in the loose statements of his memoir. The Reminiscences of the Home Life of John Randolph of Roanoke by Powhatan Bouldin contains much contemporary testimony about Randolph of the highest importance, but, as its title indicates, its scope is limited. More than a decade and a half into the 21st century, the term "race" remains one of the most emotionally charged words in the human language. While race can be defined as "a local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics," the concept of race can better be understood as a socially defined construct—a system of human classification that carries tremendous weight, yet is complex, confusing, contradictory, controversial, and imprecise. This collection of essays focuses on the socially explosive concept of race and how it has shaped human interactions across civilization. The contributed work examines the social and scientific definitions of race, the implementation of racialized policies and practices, and the historical and contemporary manifestations of the use of race in shaping social interactions (primarily) in the United States—a nation where the concept of race is further convoluted by the nation's extensive history of miscegenation as well as the continuous flow of immigrant groups from countries whose definitions of race, ethnicity, and culture remain fluid.
