Book excerpt: Thomas Jefferson once envisioned the United States as a 'nation of yeomen farmers'. Looking around today, however, illustrates that nothing could be further from the truth. In a globalised world and techno-centred society, urban sprawl is overtaking rural America. For over a century, farming was the backbone of the American economy, and though it is still critical to American productivity, many rural areas are plagued by poverty and job reduction. Agricultural issues have a hold over national politics (as in the debates over farm subsidies), but they cannot change several significant trends in America today: the movement toward fewer and larger farms, environmental pressures from urban and suburban interests, and changing food consumption patterns. In order to assist the remaining 'yeomen farmers', a comprehensive and integrated agricultural policy must be initiated to sustain the nation's farming communities. This book analyses the status of the farm industry in rural America, providing a historical context for agriculture and assessing its future for the nation. and the information provided in this book is necessary to understanding the nature of what has historically been a key component of American industry and life.

Cardinal Wyszynski was an old friend, and Soroka hoped to shed some light on the plight of the Polish people under Communist rule. However, the Cardinal could not make it, so he made a suggestioninvite the other Polish Cardinal. The other Polish cardinal, as he was known at the time, was Cardinal Karol Wojtyla. Providentially he was attending the International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia that summer and was willing to travel to a small rural city in central Wisconsin to give the academic lecture. Little did anyone know at the time that they would be welcoming a future Pope (John Paul II) as well as a living saint.

Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae to a particular environmental region, namely the Loess Hills of Iowa. The book begins by telling the ecological story of the Loess Hills and then proceeds to summarize the development of environmental ethics through the legacy of Henry David Thoreau, thereby revealing certain tensions that exist in contemporary environmental debates. Then, after considering the strengths and weaknesses of anthropocentric and ecocentric ethical systems, the author provides an exposition of Aquinas' understanding of the bonum naturalis, the bonum connaturalis, and the bonum supernaturalis, as these are found in the Summa Theologiae. flourishing only in ways that simultaneously save the contextualizing ecosystems. This ethic is then applied to the particular case of the Loess Hills, producing an eudaimonistic ecoregionalism.

The average American farmer is fifty-eight years old, and the 40 percent of farmland owners who lease their land to others are even older: sixty-six on average. Five times as many farmers are over sixty-five as are under thirty-five. What will happen to this land? Who will own it? What if one child wants to farm but can't afford to buy out the nonfarming siblings? What if keeping the farm in the family means foregoing the significant profits that could be earned from selling it? These sometimes painful and divisive questions confront many farmers and farmland owners today. How they answer them will shape their families and the land for generations to come.
