Book The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Q j r Persia c 1760 c 1870

Download or read book The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Q j r Persia c 1760 c 1870 written by Thomas O'Flynn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 1141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of The 2018 Saidi-Sirjani Book Award In The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Qājār Persia, c.1760–c.1870, Thomas O'Flynn vividly paints the life and times of missionary enterprises in early nineteenth-century Russia and Persia at a moment of immense change when Tsarist Russia embarked on an expansionist campaign reaching to the Caucasus. Simultaneously he charts the relationship between the new Persian dynasty of the Qājārs and missionary activity on the part of European and American missionaries. This book reconstructs that world from a predominantly religious perspective. It recounts the sustaining ideals as well as the everyday struggles of the western missionaries, Protestant (Scottish, Basel and American Congregationalist) and Catholic (Jesuit and Vincentian). It looks at the reactions of diverse tribal peoples, the Tatars of the North Caucasus, the Kabardians and Circassians. Persia was the ultimate goal of these missionaries, which they eventually reached in the 1820s. Altogether this study throws light on the troubled course of history in West Asia and provides the background to politico-religious conflicts in Chechnya and Persia that persist to the present day.

Book Reform Ecclesiology and the Christian Life in the Late Middle Ages

Download or read book Reform Ecclesiology and the Christian Life in the Late Middle Ages written by Thomas M. Izbicki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy was not an idle venture in the Renaissance. There were no clear-cut boundaries between theory and the practice. Theologians, jurists and humanists gave opinions on practical matters from within some larger intellectual context, and many held high office. Among the writers represented here are Pope Pius II (1458-1464), Nicholas of Cusa (d. 1464) and Juan de Torquemada OP (d. 1468). All of them, and the other writers dealt with, addressed the issues of their day creatively but from within different traditions, scholastic or humanistic. The present studies deal with issues of Reform, Ecclesiology [theories about the church and its mission] and the living of the Christian life. Among the specific issues covered are the canonization of Birgitta of Sweden, the status of converts from Judaism in Spain, acceptable forms of dress for clergy and laity, and the obedience due the pope. Also studied in this collection are the writings of Spanish theologians about the indigenous populations of the New World and the use of the name of Nicholas of Cusa by Elizabethan and Jacobean writers, both Catholic and Protestant, in polemics concerning right religious teaching and submission to the English crown, a paper hitherto unpublished.

Book A Companion to the Council of Basel

Download or read book A Companion to the Council of Basel written by Michiel Decaluwe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Council of Basel (1431-1449) met to defend the faith and reform the Church. Its efforts to deal with Hussite heresy and reform the Roman Curia led to conflict with Pope Eugenius IV (1431-1447). The council divided over the site of a council of union with the Eastern churches. Some left to attend Eugenius’ Council of Florence (1438-1443). While that council was negotiating reunion with Eastern churches, in 1439 Basel was acting to claim supremacy and depose Eugenius. The ensuing struggle went on for a decade before Basel and its pope, Felix V (Amadeus VIII of Savoy), gave up under pressure from the princes. These essays address multiple aspects of the Council of Basel, including its reforming efforts and bureaucracy. Contributors include Alberto Cadili, Gerald Christianson, Michiel Decaluwe, Thomas A. Fudge, Ursula Gießmann, Hans-Jörg Gilomen, Johannes Helmrath, Thomas M. Izbicki, Jesse D. Mann, Ivan Mariano, Heribert Müller, Émilie Rosenblieh, and Birgit Studt.

Book Church State and Community Historical and Comparative Perspectives

Download or read book Church State and Community Historical and Comparative Perspectives written by Antony Black and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running through the papers collected here is the concern to try and understand the reasons which people thought they had for acting in a certain way, and - not always the same thing - the reasons which they expressed for what they were doing. The book's first section focuses on the theories of government in the late medieval Church, especially the ideas of conciliarism; the second is concerned with the study of medieval guild and city organisation and politics, looking at the communal movement and at the impact of Christianity on the development of republican ideas. In the papers in the final part, Professor Black takes a comparative approach, setting the political thought and traditions of the Islamic world, in particular, alongside those of Western Europe as part of an attempt to understand the origins of the modern state: to know why this emerged in Europe, he argues, it is necessary to ask why it did not develop elsewhere and it is intellectual and cultural factors which provide the most obvious differentiating features.

Book Religious Culture in the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book Religious Culture in the Sixteenth Century written by John W. O'Malley and published by Variorum Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between religion and culture is the key concern of this selection of John O'Malley's articles, as it was in his earlier one, Rome and the Renaissance: Studies in Culture and Religion. The present articles address the questions of religious controversy, Church reform, and the character of Renaissance humanism, continuing the research published previously, but developing it in two specific directions. The first is that of Renaissance preaching and rhetoric in terms both of their evolution over the period, and of the particular contributions made by such figures as Luther or Erasmus. The second topic is the early history of the Jesuits, with studies on their attitudes towards humanist culture as well as on the ideas of Ignatius Loyola himself.
