Book John McHugh Travel Sketches

Download or read book John McHugh Travel Sketches written by Norman Crowe and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful and lively sketches in this volume are travel sketches by the Santa Fe architect John McHugh-designer of the first Santa Fe Opera Pavilion and designer and restoration architect for a host of churches, fine houses, and commercial and institutional buildings in New Mexico. McHugh was a consummate traveler. His journeys took him throughout New Mexico and to other parts of the US, Mexico, and Europe. The travel sketches in this volume are from the eight travel-worn sketchbooks that he left behind after his death in 1995. Here are mostly his sketches of New Mexico, but also included is a good smattering of sketches from his other journeys. His eye for detail, for capturing the essence of scenes and settings, and for expressing the salient qualities of both the man-made and nature, is remarkable. By assembling these sketches in one place, we believe readers will be inspired by his observations to see the familiar and the new in our environment in a new way, as well as to be inspired to try their own hand at travel sketching. NORMAN CROWE is an architect and emeritus professor at the University of Notre Dame and an adjunct professor in the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning. He comes from Southern Colorado and is the author of books and articles on architecture, urbanism, and the built environment and nature. He has taught drawing and sketching to architecture students in the United States and in Europe where he worked along Francesco Montana, McHugh's early mentor in the art of travel sketches.

Book Women Travel Writing and Truth

Download or read book Women Travel Writing and Truth written by Clare Broome Saunders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of truth has been one of the most constant, complex, and contentious in the cultural history of travel writing. Whether the travel was undertaken in the name of exploration, pilgrimage, science, inspiration, self-discovery, or a combination of these elements, questions of veracity and authenticity inevitably arise. Women, Travel, and Truth is a collection of twelve essays that explore the manifold ways in which travel and truth interact in women's travel writing. Essays range in date from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in the eighteenth century to Jamaica Kincaid in the twenty-first, across such regions as India, Italy, Norway, Siberia, Austria, the Orient, the Caribbean, China and Mexico. Topics explored include blurred distinctions of fiction and non-fiction; travel writing and politics; subjectivity; displacement, and exile. Students and academics with interests in literary studies, history, geography, history of art, and modern languages will find this book an important reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discovery of Islands consists of a series of linked essays in British history, written by one of the world's leading historians of political thought and published over the past three decades. Its purpose is to present British history as that of several nations interacting with - and sometimes seceding from - an imperial state. The commentary presents this history as that of an archipelago, expanding across oceans to the Antipodes. Both New Zealand history and the author's New Zealand heritage inform this vision, presenting British history as oceanic and global, complementing (and occasionally criticising) the presentation of that history as European. Professor Pocock's interpretation of British history has been hugely influential in recent years, making The Discovery of Islands a resource of immense value for historians of Britain and the world.

Whether it's cocktails at the Carlyle, taking in a show at Lincoln Center, traveling via subway, or flying out of LaGuardia's venerable Marine Air Terminal, uptown to downtown to the outer boroughs, the art created for the walls of New York City's bars, hotels, offices, government buildings, and schools have themselves created the identities of the rooms they live in. Murals of New York City was the first book to curate more than thirty of the most important, influential, and impressive murals found within all five boroughs. Full-color images of works such as Paul Helleu's Mural of the Stars on Grand Central Terminal's ceiling, Robert Crowl's Dancers at the Bar at Lincoln Center, Edward Laning's New York Public Library McGraw Rotunda, José Maria Sert and Frank Brangwyn's Rockefeller Center murals, and work by artists such as Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Maxfield Parrish, and more are accompanied by informative and historical commentary. Perfect for art and architecture lovers, Murals of New York City serves as the perfect resource for New Yorkers and souvenir for the millions of tourists who visit the city every year.
