'John Hart's Pronunciation of English' is a scholarly study on the verbalisation of the English language. Otto Jespersen was born in Randers, Denmark on 16th July 1869. He worked as an academic at Copenhagen University and rose to the position of professor of English, a post he held from 1893 to 1925. Jespersen made a considerable contribution to the study of linguistics and some of his works are still used as the basic texts for study in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Hart's Pronunciation of English Hart's Orthographic has been very little used by recent writers on the history of English sounds, and where it is mentioned, it is generally with a sneer. This is probably due to the depreciatory remarks made by Gill and Ellis. Of the former's criticism I shall have occasion to speak later; here I shall only remark that Gill, not withstanding his criticism, applies to Hart's book or system of transcription the expression bene facta. Download or read book Essays on the Sound Pattern of English written by Didier L. Goyvaerts and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1975-01-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of readings in phonological theory with special reference to English. The essays it contains are all concerned to a significant extent with discussion and criticism of the theory of phonology developed by Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle in their monograph The Sound Pattern of English. The aim in compiling this collection has been to bring together new papers, and papers that were previously only available in informal duplicated form or in comparatively inaccessible publications. This collection is of value to anyone teaching or studying English or general linguistics who wishes to make a serious study of current phonological theory, and serves as a reference anthology of permanent value to the specialist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This practical and informative course book is a fascinating, visual volume which leads the student through the development of the language from Old English, through Middle and Early Modern English to the establishment of Standard English in the eighteenth century." "At the core of this substantially expanded second edition lies a series of nearly 200 historical texts, of which more than half are reproduced in facsimile, and which illustrate the progressive changes in the language. The book is firmly based upon linguistic description, with commentaries which form a series of case studies demonstrating the evidence for language change at every level - handwriting, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, grammar and meaning." "Such a wealth of texts, as well as the structured activities and the various case studies, allow the volume to be used not only as a stimulating course text, guiding students through the analysis of data, but also as a comprehensive resource book and invaluable reference tool for teachers and students at all levels."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book English Pronunciation in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries written by C. Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-12-16 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a detailed account of word level pronunciation in England and Scotland between 1700 and 1900. All major and minor source materials are presented in depth and there is a close discussion of contemporary attitudes to pronunciation standards and orthographic reform. The materials are presented in three chronological periods: 1700-1750, 1750-1800 and the Nineteenth century, so that the reader is able not only to see the main characteristics of the pronunciation of both vowels and consonants in each period, but can also compare developments from one period to another, thus identifying ongoing changes to the phonology.
