Book excerpt: Excerpt from John De Burdeus, or John De Burgundia, Otherwise Sir John De Mandeville, and the Pestilence The following pages contain a reprint of an article on John de Burdens, or de Burgundia, and the Pestilence, which originally appeared as a note to an account of the Black Book of Paisley, published in 1885 in the New Club Series. I have added a transcript of the Latin text of the smaller tract d'e Pestz'lentz'a of John de Burdeus, taken from the Black Book of Paisley, and the English or Scottish version of the same tract taken from the Chartulary of Kelso. These are not selected as standard texts, but merely because of their connection with Scotland. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Black Book of Paisley

Download or read book The Black Book of Paisley written by David Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black Book of Paisley: And Other Manuscripts of the Scotichronicon; With a Note Upon John De Burdeus or John De Burgundia, Otherwise Sir John Mandeville, and the Pestilence The filed: Book of Baislcy has often been mistaken for an original compilation, but while this is not so, I have ventured to suggest that there is some evidence of the existence of an original Paisley Chronicle, and if this be the case, it will explain how such a mistake arose. I was long puzzled to ascertain anything regarding John de Burdeus, the author of the Tract de Pestilentia, which is copied on a y leaf of the ms. And as no account of him exists in any Book of Reference, so far as I know, I collected in Note B what I had found. This had been printed when I read Mr. Edward B. Nicholson's interesting letter in the Academy of 12th April, 1884, identifying him with Sir John Mandeville. I have added a few paragraphs to my Note, embodying the new information, and connecting it with my own but now that Mr. Nicholson has given the clue, it is to be hoped that either he or some other labourer will follow it up and unravel more fully the history of this mysterious personage. Book An Urban History of The Plague

Download or read book An Urban History of The Plague written by Karen Jillings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a medical, economic, spiritual and demographic crisis, plague affected practically every aspect of an early modern community whether on a local, regional or national scale. Its study therefore affords opportunities for the reassessment of many aspects of the pre-modern world. This book examines the incidence and effects of plague in an early modern Scottish community by analysing civic, medical and social responses to epidemics in the north-east port of Aberdeen, focusing on the period 1500–1650. While Aberdeen’s experience of plague was in many ways similar to that of other towns throughout Europe, certain idiosyncrasies in the city make it a particularly interesting case study, which challenges several assumptions about early modern mentalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his tenure as the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1905-1919, Sir William Osler amassed a considerable library on the history of medicine and science. A Canadian native, Osler had studied at McGill University and decided to leave his collection of 7,600 items to its Faculty of Medicine. A catalogue, the Bibliotheca Osleriana, was compiled - a labour of love that took ten years to complete and involved W.W. Francis, R.H. Hill, and Archibald Malloch. Osler himself laid down the broad outlines of the catalogue and wrote many of the annotations.
