The worshipper of the eagle-headed NISROCH — a mighty leader of the Chaldean hordes — had arisen, and gathering his armies from their mountain homes, had made the palaces and halls of NINEVE a desert, had marched southwards against the reigning PHARAOH of Egypt — had encountered him at CARCHEMISH — hurried on to THE HOLY CITY, and carried away with him to his favorite capital the rebellious people of the Lord. Among them was a captive of no ordinary note. He was at that time a child, yet he lived to see this descendant of the hardy Chasdim grow great in power and fame — to hear the tale of the fall of TYRE, and “the daughter of the ZIDONIANS,” and of the triumph over PHARAOH HOPHRA, whom modern researches have discovered in the twenty-sixth dynasty of Egypt’s kings. At length the haughty conqueror returns, and dreams mysteriously. This forgotten prisoner becomes the only interpreter of wondrous visions of Empires about to arise and spread over distant centuries. And that the modern reader may enter fully into those valuable explanations of the text it will be desirable to furnish him with a slight sketch of the times in which this Prophet lived. We shall then add such critical remarks as may illustrate our Author’s exposition of the Sacred Text. “Thy sons shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon,” were the ominous words of ISAIAH to a king of Judah, and after the lapse of a century they were fulfilled to the letter. Kings, and priests, and nobles, and people were all swept away by the remorseless monarch, and planted here and there along the lenny banks of the river Chebar. There EZEKIEL pined in misery among three thousand captives of rank, who, according to JOSEPHUS, graced the triumph of NEBUCHADNEZZAR. Either a priest or the son of a priest, (for the sense is doubtful, Ezekiel 1:4,) here he was compelled to linger during twenty-two years of his life, while he was wrapt in prophetic vision, and carried on the wings of the soul to the city of his fathers. Here he tarried in body, while his spirit was at home with the Cherubim within the Temple, among their wings and wheels, and burning movements, and mysterious brightness. Here he often gazed upwards into the firmament above him, and in the clear azure of an eastern sky beheld the sapphire throne, and the appearance of the glory of JEHOVAH resting majestically upon it! Here he experienced the prophetic inspiration, and was strengthened to proclaim in JEHOVAH’S Name the mysteries of punishments and desolation. He was permitted to enunciate the great truths of GOD’S moral government of his ancient ones — to proclaim the eternal connection between obedience and happiness, transgression and ruin. Nor was he alone in his declarations of vengeance against every man “that setteth up his idols in his heart.” When he entered on his office, Jeremiah had completed the thirty-fourth year of his apostleship, and was contemporary with him for at least eight years. Amidst insult, obloquy, and scorn, he proclaimed before the faithless king the coming hosts of the Chaldeans; while ZEPHANIAH was still prophesying in JUDAEA, and DANIEL proclaiming the power of holiness in the land of BABYLON. This is volume one out of two on Ezekiel and covers chapters 1 - 12.

John Calvin is considered as the first truly great scholar of the Reformation. Indeed, he has even been seen by some to be one of history’s greatest Christian biblical scholars. He had an incredible command of the Bible, and his interpretations were not based on just one or two passages. He combined pastoral insight with solid exegesis to form a strong interpretation of the scriptures. However, some of his views on the prophetic interpretation, such as in the book of Daniel, are controversial. He put forth a purist view and believed that the prophecies in the book of Daniel applied solely to the history between the time of the prophet Daniel (530 BC) and Jesus’ first coming (30 AD). Nevertheless, John Calvin was a force to be reckoned with, and is considered to have a unique insight which enabled him to find the true meaning of the Bible. Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius, after whom the anti-Calvinistic movement Arminianism was named, states that, “Next to the study of the Scriptures which I earnestly inculcate, I exhort my pupils to peruse Calvin’s Commentaries, which I extol in loftier terms than Helmich himself (a Dutch divine, 1551–1608); for I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture, and that his commentaries ought to be more highly valued than all that is handed down to us by the library of the fathers; so that I acknowledge him to have possessed above most others, or rather above all other men, what may be called an eminent spirit of prophecy. His Institutes ought to be studied after the (Heidelberg) Catechism, as containing a fuller explanation, but with discrimination, like the writings of all men.” During his life, Calvin produced commentaries on 48 books of the Bible, a total of 45 published volumes. He intended to put out a complete commentary of the Bible, but his death prevented this. The books of Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, 2 & 3 John, and Revelation were unfortunately not completed. He did, however, write a two volume commentary of the Harmony of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) as well as a separate commentary for the gospel of John. Likewise, he also wrote a two volume series on the Harmony of the Law (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). Calvin’s own exegesis of the original text allowed him to bring out a unique and pleasing interpretation. He begins each section of scripture with his own translation of the text and then further expounds upon it, point by point, making it an excellent resource for ministers and teachers alike. After more than 400 years, Calvin’s commentaries are still a relevant and essential tool for Christians.

John) Calvin developed his theology in his biblical commentaries as well as his sermons and treatises, but the most concise expression of his views is found in his magnum opus, the Institutes of the Christian Religion. He intended that the book be used as a summary of his views on Christian theology and that it be read in conjunction with his commentaries. Calvin provided many of the foundational documents for reformed churches, including documents on the catechism, the liturgy, and church governance. He also produced several confessions of faith in order to unite the churches. Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His first commentary on Romans was published in 1540, and he planned to write commentaries on the entire New Testament. Six years passed before he wrote his second, a commentary on I Corinthians, but after that he devoted more attention to reaching his goal. Within four years he had published commentaries on all the Pauline epistles, and he also revised the commentary on Romans. He then turned his attention to the general epistles, dedicating them to Edward VI of England. By 1555 he had completed his work on the New Testament, finishing with the Acts and the Gospels (he omitted only the brief second and third Epistles of John and the Book of Revelation). For the Old Testament, he wrote commentaries on Isaiah, the books of the Pentateuch, the Psalms, and Joshua. The material for the commentaries often originated from lectures to students and ministers that he reworked for publication.
