Book John Calvin and The Reformation of the Refugees

Download or read book John Calvin and The Reformation of the Refugees written by Heiko Oberman and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heiko A. Oberman dedicated the last fifteen years of his scholarly career to the study of John Calvin and the pan-European movement he launched, described by Oberman as the "Reformation of the Refugees". In the eight essays collected here, Oberman assesses a half-century of research on Calvinism, probes the matrix of Calvin's early thought, addresses Calvin's message and its appeal to persecuted churches in France and exile communities throughout Europe, and, on a fundamental level, seeks to identify why Calvinism and the Reformed tradition became the most successful branch of Protestant Christianity by the end of the sixteenth century. Oberman concludes that church discipline, the "call" of predestination, and Old Testament narratives of a God "trekking" with his people in the desert all provided pastoral comfort in times of uncertainty. Incisive in his arguments and creative in his insights, Oberman's findings have contributed greatly to the current shape of research on Calvin and Calvinism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Heiko Oberman's thesis on the Reformation of the Refugees, this paper explores to what extent John Calvin's experience of exile had influenced his ministry, theology, and hermeneutics. With the background of the unprecedented mass movement of vagrants and religious refugees during the sixteenth century, we demonstrate how Calvin as a refugee himself was especially keen on proving the abiding presence of God with his people in the same way the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was with the exiles of the Bible. Moreover, taking into account the rising tide of anti-immigrant feelings by local communities everywhere on the continent, we show various ways -- for example, through his doctrine of election -- how Calvin sought to bolster a sense of dignity and religious identity while refugees at large were being stigmatized as criminals and outside the grace of God.

Book excerpt: Many things are said about John Calvin, but few ever mention just how practical his works really are. I was struck with this practicality when first reading Calvin twenty or so years ago after 'accidentally' buying a copy of the Institutes at the local Christian bookstore. I took the two volumes home and dove right into a lightning storm of inspiration and solid Bible application. What seemed most crazy to me about becoming Calvin's student was that fact that he had penned these truths some five hundred years before. We as pastors often read books a great while before we stumble across some truth that upsets our whole way of thinking. I found in reading Calvin the best pay for my labor. Although the two volumes of the Institutes seem large, Calvin himself says that by nature he loves brevity and goes to lengths to bullseye truths rather than waste his reads time with things that don't really matter. This little book is just a starter book for people who have been underexposed to Calvin's thought. I am no academic theologian as you can tell, but as a local church pastor it is my hope that Calvin's writings will promote the Glory of Christ for just one more accidental reader. All passages have modernized English from the 1845 Beverage Translation of the Institutes Paul Jason Perkins is the Pastor Of Resurrection Church in Woodlawn VA

Book The Necessity of Reforming the Church

Download or read book The Necessity of Reforming the Church written by John Calvin and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin (10 July 1509 - 27 May 1564) was one of the most influential Christians of the last millennium. An influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation, Calvin was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later named after him. Originally trained as a humanist lawyer, he broke from the Roman Catholic Church around 1530, and after religious tensions provoked a violent uprising against Protestants in France, Calvin fled to Basel, Switzerland, where he published the first edition of his seminal work Institutes of the Christian Religion in 1536. Calvin was a tireless polemic and apologetic writer who generated much controversy. He also exchanged cordial and supportive letters with many reformers, including Philipp Melanchthon and Heinrich Bullinger. In addition to the Institutes, he wrote commentaries on most books of the Bible, as well as theological treatises and confessional documents. He regularly preached sermons throughout the week in Geneva. Calvin was influenced by the Augustinian tradition, which led him to expound the doctrine of predestination and the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation. Calvin's writing and preachings provided the seeds for the branch of theology that bears his name. The Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which look to Calvin as a chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. Calvin was mostly concerned with reforming the Church, both in terms of doctrine and in terms of how the Church preached and persecuted. He covers all these topics in these commentaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin in Context offers a comprehensive overview of Calvin's world. Including essays from social, cultural, feminist, and intellectual historians, each specially commissioned for this volume, the book considers the various early modern contexts in which Calvin worked and wrote. It captures his concerns for Northern humanism, his deep involvement in the politics of Geneva, his relationships with contemporaries, and the polemic necessities of responding to developments in Rome and other Protestant sects, notably Lutheran and Anabaptist. The volume also explores Calvin's tasks as a pastor and doctor of the church, who was constantly explicating the text of scripture and applying it to the context of sixteenth-century Geneva, as well as the reception of his role in the Reformation and beyond. Demonstrating the complexity of the world in which Calvin lived, John Calvin in Context serves as an essential research tool for scholars and students of early modern Europe.
