Book Computing with Quantum Cats

Download or read book Computing with Quantum Cats written by John Gribbin and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mind-blowing glimpse into the near future, where quantum computing will have world-transforming effects. The quantum computer is no longer the stuff of science fiction. Pioneering physicists are on the brink of unlocking a new quantum universe which provides a better representation of reality than our everyday experiences and common sense ever could. The birth of quantum computers - which, like Schrödinger's famous "dead and alive" cat, rely on entities like electrons, photons, or atoms existing in two states at the same time - is set to turn the computing world on its head. In his fascinating study of this cutting-edge technology, John Gribbin updates his previous views on the nature of quantum reality, arguing for a universe of many parallel worlds where "everything is real." Looking back to Alan Turing's work on the Enigma machine and the first electronic computer, Gribbin explains how quantum theory developed to make quantum computers work in practice as well as in principle. He takes us beyond the arena of theoretical physics to explore their practical applications - from machines which learn through "intuition" and trial and error to unhackable laptops and smartphones. And he investigates the potential for this extraordinary science to create a world where communication occurs faster than light and teleportation is possible. This is an exciting insider's look at the new frontier of computer science and its revolutionary implications.

Download or read book Quantum Computing from Colossus to Qubits written by John Gribbin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolution is here. In breakthrough after breakthrough, pioneering physicists are unlocking a new quantum universe which provides a better representation of reality than our everyday experiences and common sense ever could. The birth of quantum computers - which, like Schrödinger's famous dead-and-alive cat, rely on entities like electrons existing in a mixture of states - is starting to turn the computing world on its head. In his fascinating study of this cutting-edge technology (first published as Computing with Quantum Cats and now featuring a new foreword), John Gribbin updates his previous views on the nature of quantum reality, arguing for a universe of many parallel worlds where 'everything is real'. Looking back to Alan Turing's work on the Enigma machine and the first electronic computer, Gribbin explains how quantum theory developed to make quantum computers work in practice as well as in principle. He takes us beyond the arena of theoretical physics to explore their practical applications - from machines which learn through 'intuition' and trial and error to unhackable laptops and smartphones. And he investigates the potential for this extraordinary science to allow communication faster than light and even teleportation, as we step into a world of infinite possibility.

Book excerpt: I attended the Caltech Seminar Day on 16th May 09 and heard a lecture: Quantum Information Science presented by Professor J Preskill. His lecture had a number of slides showing how the three dimensions of Quantum states function. He mentioned Quantum Computers as the next step in computer science from the classical transistor based digital computers which have made such a change in the life of modern day humans. Since I have a deep interest in computer science based on my professional experience: designing Avionics systems for military aircraft which were the first to use digital computers, Teaching Computer Science as an adjunct assistant professor to graduate students, Designing and fabricating small digital computers in a small company I decided I needed to learn about Quantum Computers and where research is going in this important new technology. The way I discovered the status of Quantum Computer is using the Google & Yahoo search engines. I was happy that Indiana University and Caltech have active Quantum Computer Research programs in progress. Jon Schiller holds a BS in Physics from Caltech and a PhD from the University of Southern California in EE & Mathematics. He has authored: 21st Century Cosmology

Download or read book Gone to Soldiers written by Marge Piercy and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping New York Times bestseller is “the most thorough and most captivating, most engrossing novel ever written about World War II” (Los Angeles Times). Epic in scope, Marge Piercy’s sweeping novel encompasses the wide range of people and places marked by the Second World War. Each of her ten narrators has a unique and compelling story that powerfully depicts his or her personality, desires, and fears. Special attention is given to the women of the war effort, like Bernice, who rebels against her domineering father to become a fighter pilot, and Naomi, a Parisian Jew sent to live with relatives in Detroit, whose twin sister, Jacqueline—still in France—joins the resistance against Nazi rule. The horrors of the concentration camps; the heroism of soldiers on the beaches of Okinawa, the skies above London, and the seas of the Mediterranean; the brilliance of code breakers; and the resilience of families waiting for the return of sons, brothers, and fathers are all conveyed through powerful, poignant prose that resonates beyond the page. Gone to Soldiers is a testament to the ordinary people, with their flaws and inner strife, who rose to defend liberty during the most extraordinary times.

Book Critical Psychophysical Passages in the Life of a Woman

Download or read book Critical Psychophysical Passages in the Life of a Woman written by Joan Offerman-Zuckerberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the birth of my second son some 11 years ago, I was painfully torn by the timing of my reentry to work-my wish to return to a prestigious and stimulating position as chief psychologist of a large agency, or my equally powerful wish to enjoy fully my beautiful new son's infancy, undivided and untorn. At the time I had a dream that my body was cut in half at the waist-my head leaned to the books neatly contained on the library shelves; my belly went to the crib, all sweet-smelling and soft. Not having had the opportunity to be "un divided" with my first son (now 17 years old), I chose to resign my agency position and stay home as long as I wished and then develop my private practice. It was a decision that at the time entailed much loss-cerebral, collegial, social, pres tigious-and generated some self-doubt, but in retrospect it is not regretted and was perhaps wise. This son's infancy will always be remembered as a time in which I experienced mothering with ease and grace.
