Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John and His Writings There is a disposition at the present time with a certain class of writers to emphasize the dependence of John upon Paul, and these writers try to make it appear that the author of the Johannine books was a disciple of Paul even more fully than he was a disciple of Jesus. We believe that John always was a receptive soul and that he probably learned much from Paul, as from every other strong per sonality with whom he came into contact, but the supreme influence in all his more mature life was that of the Master. For the most part he was one of the quiet in the land, and he stood nearest to the Master, and he saw deepest into the Master's spirit and truth, and he meditated longest upon these things, and in the end he formulated more fully than any other the essentials of the new faith; and as far as he went we believe that he has spoken the final word in this field. Paul was taught by the Spirit, but John had had the additional advantage of the three years of teaching by the Incarnate Lord. After Pentecost the Spirit of Jesus led him into all the truth. His personal experience and the history of the church taught him new significance and fresh result from many of his early memories of the Master's teaching and life. At last he was prepared to write the consummation of the New Testament revelation, the final residuum of the first century's experience in the origin and the development of Christian truth. After Peter had been crucified and Paul had been beheaded, John was left to carry on the work and to perfect the faith for an other entire generation in the church. What Jesus had taught in the first third of the century and what Peter and Paul had preached in the second third of the century John meditated upon through the last third of the century, and in this period he wrote the epistles, the Apocalypse, and the Gospel. They represent the highest reach of apostolic inspiration. This book will be perfect anathema in the eyes of those who are accustomed to treat the Johannine literature as anonymous or pseudonymous, and to regard the contents of these books as composed mainly of such stufl as dreams are made of. We believe that the church tradition is vera cious and trustworthy which assigns the authorship of the five Johannine books to the apostle John. We believe that the fourth Gospel is no romance, to be interpreted either allegorically or rationalistically. We believe in its historical trustworthiness, and we follow the apostle John as our supreme authority both as to fact and to faith. Book The Gospel of John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel of John Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of John The Gospel of John is perhaps the best loved and most frequently read of any of the gospels. Recent scholarship has thrown much light upon the authorship and purpose of this gospel and the part which it played in the developing thought and life of the early Christians. Investigation, although modifying some current views of this gospel, has added greatly to its value as a Christian document. Viewed in the light of its origin and purpose, it becomes replete with life, not only the life of the Master and his disciples, but with the intellectual and spiritual struggles of the Christians of the hundred years following the death of Jesus. This course presents the gospel in the light of recent scholarship but simply and for the study of individuals and groups, in the home, church, or the community. It is one of the Outline Bible-Study Courses prepared by the American Institute of Sacred Literature, twelve similar courses being mentioned on a preceding page. This course follows the general method of all the series, giving a daily assignment for reading from the Bible, but requiring no books of reference. Any person paying fifty cents for this book to a dealer, the publishing agents, the University of Chicago Press, or to the headquarters of the American Institute of Sacred Literature directly or through the leader of a club is considered thereby a member of the Institute and may register his name as such by mail at the headquarters, the University of Chicago, without further charge. Upon application, question sheets containing all the review questions printed in this book, with spaces for written answers, will be sent him. These question sheets may be filled out and returned to the Institute for credit and certificate. Work is not graded. The certificate is given as a recognition of the fact that the work has been done to the best ability of the student, which may vary according to previous preparation and general knowledge of the subject. In applying for question sheets, the printed form contained in this pamphlet may be used. In the publication of these courses it is first of all assumed that the work is to be done by the student and that the leader of the class is seeking to gather up the results of the students work rather than to assume the attitude of a teacher. In those groups, however, which are taught in the fashion of a Sunday school or other weekly class, in which no work upon the part of the student can be counted upon, the passages may be read and discussed at the class period. For all groups a special pamphlet of suggestions to leaders is provided in which special topics for discussion are suggested and entertaining features for meetings of the class outlined. Is he to be admired as the best of men, or may he also be worshiped and trusted as God; was he the greatest of prophets, or is he also the Messiah, the predicted Saviour of the world? Then, again, does it really matter how we regard him? Is it true that our attitude toward him is a test of character, and that belief in him affects life and determines destiny? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of St. John: Critical and Explanatory For the present Edition I have re - written and considerably enlarged the Introduction. Within recent years a great number of English and foreign works have appeared On the fourth Gospel, and I have freely made use of them to bring the treat ment of the various questions up to date. To the question of the Johannine authorship of the Gospel I have devoted special attention, both because of the assaults that have been made upon it, and on account of its own intrinsic importance. That importance cannot easily be exaggerated. If a man of the fourth Evangelist' s acknowledged mental calibre really belonged to the chosen Twelve, and thus had an opportunity during a lengthened period of hearing Christ's discourses and witnessing His works, then no amount of destructive criticism can shake the force of his explicit and repeated testimony to Christ's Divinity. Hence it is that, while anxious to be brief, I have devoted considerable space, more, perhaps, than some -might think necessary, to proving by external and internal evidence that the author Of the Gospel is no other than John the Apostle. In section vi. I have tried to establish the Gospel's historical character, and though the treatment of the question does not pretend to be exhaustive, I believe I have shown that, while the arguments for the traditional View are strong and convinc ing, the chief difficulties against it admit of at least a probable explanation. In the Commentary itself, the changes in the present Edition are few, and in no case of any serious importance. In some instances views have been slightly modified, and misprints, wherever noticed, have been corrected. It only remains for me to hope that the friendly reception accorded to its predecessors may be extended also to the present Edition. Book John Huss

Download or read book John Huss written by David Schley Schaff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 1915 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Huss came from the ancient Kingdom of Bohemia, but his voice belongs to our collective religious heritage. He carved a place for himself in the history of revolutionary theology by taking a position that was dangerously contrary to the orthodoxy of his time and his church. Whether Roman Catholic, protestant or of an orthodox denomination this work has far reaching implications for all Christians and scholars. Orthodox denominations find in his style of preaching a resonance with the roots of their church and an older style of religious leadership. Huss can rightly be said to have rocked the Roman Catholic Church to its very foundations, threatening to rip Bohemia permanently from the bosom of mother Church. His subsequent death sentence was utterly unsuccessful in attempting to consign his views to the inferno. To Protestants, particularly those who know the roots of rebellion run deeper and further than Martin Luther ever dreamed, Huss is a hero and a martyr for the cause of religious reformation. He redefined church, fellowship within Christianity and the nature of religious orthodoxy was changed forever by his radical message. To those who do not believe he represents the powerful figure of a man of conscience, determined to get his message to the masses, no matter what it cost him personally. To some John Huss remains unabsolved, unforgiven, but his resolute conviction, right to the very end ensures that as readers we realise he also remains unapologetic. A tragic, racing read by David Schaff that ensures that we know the value of standing up for those beliefs we hold dear as well as the terrible cost. Book excerpt: This new book is the definitive study of the MGA, for the author has gone back to factory records and to the people who worked on the car in the 'fifties, to find out how it was conceived, manufactured and marketed. Here is the real story of the MGA's engineering, body styling and every aspect of the car's development and production - including MG's strategy to beat its competitors. In seven years of production, there were major successes and sad disappointments. The MGA was the car that was "right first time" and though the Twin Cam variant was a nightmare for the factory, it is now the most sought after model. This book tells how the sleepy Thames-side village of Abingdon became a mass-production centre for the MGA, how the MGA became one of America's best-loved sports cars and how the MGA has become one of today's classic cars, cherished by enthusiastic owners all over the world.
