Book excerpt: A manifesto-guidebook to one of the American South's most astounding art environments In the summer of 1989, Joe Minter had a vision from God to create art that would honor the shared experiences of African Americans in this country. From that moment, Minter began building a sprawling collection of sculpture and installation works on land adjacent to both his home and the Shadow Lawn Memorial Gardens, a historically black cemetery, in the Woodland Park neighborhood of Birmingham. The result is a continuously evolving art environment that recounts both immediately local and world events that have affected humanity, with a focus on the contributions and tribulations of African Americans. Thousands of visitors from all over the world have visited his yard environment, and Minter's sculptures are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other museums nationwide. On the 30th anniversary of his vision, Institute 193 and Tinwood have reissued To You Through Me: The Beginning of a Link of a Journey of 400 Years, Minter's 2004 self-published creative manifesto and didactic field guide to the African Village in America yard show. Those who cannot visit in person can use this first-person guidebook to experience Joe Minter's yard and learn from his years of thoughtful meditations on history, place and the human condition.
Download or read book The Unfinished Business of Unsettled Things written by Bernard L. Herman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book invites readers into a growing, dynamic conversation among scholars and critics around a vibrant community of artists from an African American South. This constellation of creative makers includes familiar figures, such as Thornton Dial Sr., Lonnie Holley, and quiltmakers Nettie Young and Mary Lee Bendolph, whose work is collected in major museum and private collections. The artists represented extend to lesser-known but equally compelling creators working across a wide range of artistic forms, themes, and geographies. The essays gathered here, accompanied by a generous selection of full-color plates, survey subjects such as the artists' engagement with enslavement and liberation, the spiritual and religious dimensions of their work, the technical aspects of their work (such as the common use of "assemblage" as an artistic medium), the links between art and biography, and the evolving status of their reception in narratives of contemporary, modern, southern, and American art. Contributors are Celeste-Marie Bernier, Laura Bickford, Michael J. Bramwell, Elijah Heyward III, Sharon P. Holland, and Pamela J. Sachant.
Download or read book Outsider Art Second World of Art written by Colin Rhodes and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated edition of this comprehensive overview of outsider art, distinguished by its wider international scope and inclusion of global developments since 2000. Outsider art is the work produced outside the mainstream of modern art by self-taught, untrained visionaries, spiritualists, recluses, folk artists, psychiatric patients, prisoners, and others beyond the imposed margins of society and the art market. Coined by Roger Cardinal in 1972, the term was intended as an English equivalent to Jean Dubuffet’s “art brut”—literally “raw art,” “uncooked” by culture, unaffected by fashion, unmoved by artistic standards. In this comprehensive and indispensable guide, Colin Rhodes surveys the history and reception of outsider art—first championed by Dubuffet and the Surrealists, now appreciated by a wider public. This volume provides fresh insights into the achievements of both major figures and newly discovered artists, as well as the emergence of specialized studios, as the relationship between outsider art and the contemporary mainstream art world has developed and become more intertwined. From spirit-guided Madge Gill and schizophrenic Adolf Wölfli, to Rosemarie Koczy’s expressions of trauma and Nek Chand’s outdoor creations, these individuals passionately pursue the pictorial expression of their vision. Now illustrated in full color, with the exception of some archival photographs, this new edition has been substantially revised with a greater focus on global outsider art, as well as including more recent talents to the field.
