Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A twisted Cinderella story from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Ann Aguirre Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband's shadow. He controls her every move—what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she's allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are...consequences. And he has all the power. To outsiders, it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she's allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second. Unless she flips the script. Praise: "The Third Mrs. Durst is a slow, dark burn that leads to a fantastic explosion of an ending."—Victoria Helen Stone, bestselling author of Jane Doe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A sheer joy' Joanna Lumley 'This book gives me hope ... that life and marriage might permanently include taking the absolute piss while simultaneously dancing in the kitchen' Emma Freud 'An endearing portrait of exasperation, laced with hard won tolerance - and love' Guardian Joanna and Roger have been married for over forty years. Children of the Sixties, they're still free spirits, drawn together by their passion for music - and each other. Conversations from a Long Marriage is exactly that: following conversations that take them from the local café, to their kitchen table. She suggests there are advantages to single beds and wants to go clubbing in Ibiza for her imminent 'big' birthday, he has a dodgy knee and is on statins, and when they discuss the marriage break-up of their closest friends, there's jealousy and talk of affairs. Witty, big-hearted and a whole lot of fun, Conversations from a Long Marriage will resonate with couples of any age - but especially those who are still dancing in the kitchen, singing in the car and trying to keep the passion alive.

Download or read book Post Apartheid Gothic written by Mélanie Joseph-Vilain and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Apartheid Gothic: White South African Writers and Space analyzes the representation of space in recent works by South African writers. By combining analytical tools borrowed from Gothic studies with geocritical and postcolonial approaches, Mélanie Joseph-Vilain assesses the literary mechanisms utilized by Damon Galgut, Henrietta Rose-Innes, Lauren Beukes, Justin Carwright, and Lynn Freed to negotiate the complexities of post-apartheid identities in their fiction. Joseph-Vilain argues that the literary representations of emblematic places, real or imagined (the home, the farm, the city or the “non-places” of dystopia), express and reveal anxieties linked to the sharing of space in post-apartheid South Africa. The text successively (re-)visits the places that have been shaping South African white writing since Olive Schreiner’s African Farm—in other words, its topoi, both in the etymological sense of “place” and in the literary sense of recurring themes or arguments. Joseph-Vilain argues that these Gothicized topoi have provided writers with tools to explore the deep anxieties generated by the redefinition of South African society as the Rainbow Nation. While focusing specifically on the South African avatars of the Gothic and their interaction with local forms and genres like the plaasroman, the text also discusses the impact of globalization on South African literary, cultural, social, and political identities.
Download or read book Unlocked written by Simon E. Poole and published by University of Chester. This book was released on 2021-11-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who could have anticipated the vicissitudes of the last year? And while the stark changes in our lives were pulling us together as a society, as we coped with what was unfolding, the quieter, often isolated time that followed allowed many to focus on writing. Lockdowns across the country may have created all kinds of problems for different people, but one of the positives that seems to have been unlocked across our county, and very probably across the country, was our individual creative potential. These pages are just one example of those isolated endeavours coming together into a collective expression of individual experience. This anthology is an incredibly unique publication, not only for how it documents this strange moment in time, but more importantly for how it reminds us of our need to explore, unravel, pose ‘what-ifs’, in order to make sense of the world: and the benefits of writing for our own wellbeing.
