Download or read book Fang Claw Tooth Nail written by Douglas Christian Larsen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rodolphus and Larsen, together in one book for the very first time. Although very different writers, these two storytellers stir emotions, produce chills, and introduce people we soon know and love (and sometimes hate and fear). Collected here are such singular works as Fearsweat, wherein a supernatural stalker threatens an entire town. In My Father: The Killer, we meet a young man who has always believed the worst about his father, a famed terrorist. Interstate Chimes accompanies twins completing their separate destinies outside of time and space. We enter an amazing little girl's creative genius in Four-Leaf Clovers. And for a dark laugh (and scream) we ride along with The Dread Cowboy. Included herein is the unfinished Rodolphus master-work, the novella Contest Darkly which taps into the incredible world of Larsen's Vanya Song (a novel 40 years in the making). Rodolphus and Larsen, like coffee and cream, or hemlock and wine, we experience a world incredibly dark, yet vividly bright.

Book We re Going To Live Forever

Download or read book We re Going To Live Forever written by Ken Heathcote and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does a fitness class that is now in its eighty-sixth year have to do with retaining your mental capacity well into your nineties? Why do these people eat what they want, ignore the experts on the Mediterranean diet, the five a day; and drink tea to hydrate themselves? Why do they value the company of others above the exercises? How do they unwittingly practice mental disciplines espoused by the world’s top neuroscientists on defeating dementia? ‘We train the right side and the left side of the brain’, says Mary McDaid from County Wicklow. ‘We can do this forever’, said Sally Floyd from Edinburgh. ‘I am going to live to be a hundred’, says John Higson from Bolton; and now at ninety-five looks like he’s going to make it. ‘My Grandmother said to me: if you rest you rust’, says Derek Craynor from Manchester. How right grannie was. These people, and many others like them, have steered and shaped this book. I just listened, put the pieces together and penned the narrative. Their stories reveal their secrets to eternal youth. Read on to share in those secrets. We’re Going to Live Forever was inspired by the people of this book and a television programme of the 1970’s called Fame. It would seem almost incidental that the best brains in the world agree with what these people do and how they do it, and why it works. I, on the other hand, just watched it unfold, joined in the fun, and started a journey of a lifetime – Ken Heathcote.

Book Resisting Rebellion

  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2006-08-18
  • ISBN : 9780813191706
  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Resisting Rebellion written by Anthony James Joes and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-08-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Resisting Rebellion, Anthony James Joes explores insurgencies ranging across five continents and spanning more than two centuries. Analyzing examples from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, he identifies recurrent patterns and offers useful lessons for future policymakers. Insurgencies arise from many sources of discontent, including foreign occupation, fraudulent elections, and religious persecution, but they also stem from ethnic hostilities, the aspirations of would-be elites, and traditions of political violence. Because insurgency is as much a political phenomenon as a military one, effective counterinsurgency requires a thorough understanding of the insurgents' motives and sources of support. Clear political aims must guide military action if a counterinsurgency is to be successful and prepare a lasting reconciliation within a deeply fragmented society. The most successful counterinsurgency campaign undertaken by the United States was the one against Philippine insurgents following the Spanish-American War. But even more instructive than successful counterinsurgencies are the persistent patterns of errors revealed by Joes's comparative study. Instances include the indiscriminate destructiveness displayed by the Japanese in China and the Soviets in Afghanistan, and the torture of suspected Muslim terrorists by members of the French Army in Algeria. Joes's comprehensive twofold approach to counterinsurgency is easily applied to the U.S. The first element, developing the strategic basis for victory, emphasizes creating a peaceful path to the redress of legitimate grievances, committing sufficient troops to the counterinsurgent operation, and isolating the conflict area from outside aid. The second element aims at marginalizing the insurgents and includes fair conduct toward civilians and prisoners, systematic intelligence gathering, depriving insurgents of weapons and food, separating insurgent leaders from their followers, and offering amnesty to all but the most incorrigible. Providing valuable insights into a world of conflict, Resisting Rebellion is a thorough and readable exploration of successes and failures in counterinsurgency's long history and a strategy for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Kappel and Japhet Buchanan never expected their friendship to be tested by the Third Reich. Friends from early childhood, the boys form an inseparable, brotherly bond. Growing up in a little German village, they escape most of the struggles of war until the day Japhet is banished from school for being a Jew, and later has a rib broken when other village boys beat him up. Franz learns he is putting himself in danger for spending so much time with Japhet but continues to stand up for his Jewish friend even at the risk to himself. Then one day their lives are shattered when they see first-hand that the price of being a Jew is dangerously high. With the war now on their doorsteps, Franz and Japhet come up with a desperate plan to save their families and get them out of Germany alive. Leaving behind the lives they've always known, they move into Berlin with nothing to protect them but forged papers and each other. Convinced their friendship can keep them going, the boys try and make a new life for themselves while trying to keep their true identities and Japhet's heritage a secret. Taking his best friend's safety upon himself, Franz joins the Nazis in an attempt to get valuable information. At the same time, Japhet joins the Jewish Resistance, neither friend telling the other of their new occupations. With everyone in their world telling them a Nazi and a Jew can't be friends, it is only a matter of time before they believe all the lies themselves, until neither is certain if they are fighting against a race of people or fighting for their homeland. Somehow they have to survive the horrors of World War 2, even when all of Germany seems to be against them.

Book You Were Never in Chicago

Download or read book You Were Never in Chicago written by Neil Steinberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steinberg takes readers through Chicago's vanishing industrial past and explores the city from the quaint skybridge between the towers of the Wrigley Building, to the depths of the vast Deep Tunnel system below the streets. He deftly explains the city's complex web of political favoritism and carefully profiles the characters he meets along the way. Steinberg never loses the curiosity and close observation of an outsider, while thoughtfully considering how this perspective has shaped the city, and what it really means to belong.
