Download or read book Jimmy Higgins written by Aileen Kraditor and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-08-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study fills a conspicuous gap in the secondary literature on the Communist Party by examining the mental world of the wholly committed rank-and-file Party member. Jimmy Higgins was an imaginary composite considered the ideal for members to emulate; the attitudes and beliefs held by Jimmy Higgins-type members have not been adequately studied until now. As Kraditor demonstrates these members differed in important ways from the Party leaders and cadre, and also from the vast majority of members who belonged to the Party for only a few years. Basing her analysis on a detailed textual examination of thousands of pages of Party publications and on her own experience as a long-term Party member, Kraditor reconstructs the second reality in which the devout rank-and-file member lived.

Download or read book Murder Mayhem in Erie Pennsylvania written by Justin Dombrowski and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gruesome Tales From the Gem City of the Great Lakes From the French and Indian War to Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie, the city of Erie has a prideful place in the American story, but there also exists a seedy history of crime and murder. In 1905 Detective James "Jimmie" Higgins was mysteriously killed at Central High School and the drawn-out manhunt for his murderer occupied headlines for months. On a cold January night in 1911, a massive explosion rocked the Erie waterfront when criminals bombed the Pennsylvania Railroad Coal Trestle, leaving it a smoldering mass of steel and debris. The unsolved murder of Manley W. Keene inspired a local newspaper to bring in the "Female Sherlock Holmes," Mary Holland, who defied gender expectations and reshaped detective work in Erie for generations. Author Justin Dombrowski uncovers dark stories from Erie's illicit past.
Download or read book Whirlwind written by Aubrey Malone and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White is Britain's best-loved snooker player. A one-time ragamuffin straight out of the pages of Charles Dickens, he has enthralled audiences worldwide for three decades with his electrifying brilliance, winning ten world-ranking events - although, heartbreakingly, he has lost six Crucible World Championship finals. In this in-depth, warts-and-all biography, die-hard fan Aubrey Malone examines White's background, his illiteracy, drinking and tempestuous relationship with his wife Maureen, set against his incredible rise to the top in snooker's halcyon days of the 1980s. There are tales of Jimmy using a walking stick to make a century break at his local snooker hall, his battles with the twin demons of drink and the yips, and how he nearly lost the world trophy, despite never having won it! But in the end it is White's obsession with winning, and his astonishing ability on the baize, often against all the odds, that shines through.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Marked by [McDermid’s] trademark stunners, including a climax that packs a vicious punch. And readers are again left to marvel at her ingenuity.” —Jay Strafford, Richmond Times-Dispatch From one of the finest crime writers we have, The Vanishing Point kicks off with a nightmare scenario—the abduction of a child in an international airport. Stephanie Harker is in the screening booth at airport security, separated from Jimmy Higgins, the five-year-old boy she’s in the process of adopting, when a man in a TSA uniform leads the boy away. The more Stephanie sounds the alarm, the more the security agents suspect her, and the further away the kidnapper gets. It soon becomes apparent that nothing in this situation is clear-cut. For starters, Jimmy’s birth mother was a celebrity—living in a world where conspiracy and obfuscation are excused for the sake of column inches. And then there are the bad boys in both women’s pasts. As FBI agent Vivian McKuras and Scotland Yard Detective Nick Nicolaides investigate on both sides of the pond, Stephanie learns just how deep a parent’s fear can reach. And the horrifying reality is that she has good reason to be afraid—for reasons she never saw coming. “[McDermid’s] work is taut, psychologically complex and so gripping that it puts your life on hold.” —The Times (London)

Download or read book Milltown written by Jimmy Higgins and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milltown is a small community just outside Glasgow where everything in 1914 is local: the pub, the preacher, the policeman, the teacher; the gossip, the poacher, the pariah, the bleacher. Quiet, that is, unless you consider three inconvenient distractions – a Rumour, a Psychopath and a First World War. When Aggie McMillan’s unfailing intuition senses that the suicide of a young man in the village has more sinister overtones, she sets in motion a train of events which will have fateful consequences for her and for those around her. Meanwhile the foundations, fixtures and fittings of this close knit community are about to be torn asunder by the Great War as all but one of its young men join up together to fight together and to die together at the battle of the Somme, leaving ‘naebody left tae kiss the lassies’.Away from the great Fall-In, other tensions are brewing: Red Clydeside Marxism, the Suffragettes, the Easter rising in Dublin, war profiteering all combine to add spice to the drama which engulfs and overwhelms the social fabric of this small West of Scotland town.Based on the real-life town of Neilston, the author’s work is influenced by great Scottish writers such as William MacIlvanney Christopher Brookmyre and Iain Banks.
