Book Jim Cirillo s Tales Of The Stakeout Squad

Download or read book Jim Cirillo s Tales Of The Stakeout Squad written by Paul Kirchner and published by Paladin Press. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Guns, Bullets, and Gunfights in 1996, readers have pressed for a follow-up with more information on Jim Cirillo and his service with the New York City Police Department's Stakeout Unit. That book is finally here. Author Paul Kirchner was working with Cirillo on this biography at the time of Jim's untimely death in 2007. Kirchner draws on his extensive interviews with Cirillo, his family, friends, ex-partner Bill Allard and other SOU officers to create a vivid portrait of an affable and gregarious man who nonetheless was "the last man many armed robbers saw on this earth." In previously unpublished accounts, Cirillo describes in detail numerous stakeouts and sets the record straight about what he and the other SOU members actually accomplished on the streets of New York. Cirillo also talks about his early years as a street cop and his service with the NYPD Emergency Service Unit; his successes as a lifelong competitive shooter; his distinguished career as a firearms trainer; his unique relationship with Jeff Cooper; his carry guns and the guns of the SOU; and much more. Cirillo's unique voice and humor enliven every page, resulting in a fitting, lasting tribute to a legendary police officer, shooting instructor, gunfighter and raconteur.

Book excerpt: Mafia Summit is the true story of how a small-town lawman in upstate New York busted a Cosa Nostra conference in 1957, exposing the Mafia to America In a small village in upstate New York, mob bosses from all over the country—Vito Genovese, Carlo Gambino, Joe Bonanno, Joe Profaci, Cuba boss Santo Trafficante, and future Gambino boss Paul Castellano—were nabbed by Sergeant Edgar D. Croswell as they gathered to sort out a bloody war of succession. For years, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover had adamantly denied the existence of the Mafia, but young Robert Kennedy immediately recognized the shattering importance of the Appalachian summit. As attorney general when his brother JFK became president, Bobby embarked on a campaign to break the spine of the mob, engaging in a furious turf battle with the powerful Hoover. Detailing mob killings, the early days of the heroin trade, and the crusade to loosen the hold of organized crime, fans of Gus Russo and Luc Sante will find themselves captured by this momentous story. Reavill scintillatingly recounts the beginning of the end for the Mafia in America and how it began with a good man in the right place at the right time.

Book Dope Rider

Download or read book Dope Rider written by Paul Kirchner and published by Editions Tanibis. This book was released on 2021-01-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dope Rider is back in town! After a 30-year hiatus, Paul Kirchner brought back to life his iconic, bony stoner hero whose first adventures were a staple of the psychedelic counter-culture magazine High Times in the 1970s and 1980s. The new stories collected in this book were all created after 2015 and despite the years, Dope Rider has stayed essentially the same, still smoking his ever-present joint, getting high and chasing metaphysical dragons through whimsical realities in meticulously illustrated and colorful one-page adventures. Fans of the original Dope Rider comics will still find the bold graphical innovations, dubious puns and wild dreamscapes inspired by classical painting and western movies that were some of Dope Rider’s trademark. This time though, Kirchner draws from a much larger panel of influences, including modern pop – and pot – culture (lines and characters from Star Wars as well as references to Denver as the US weed capital can be found here and there) and a wider range of artistic references, from Alice in Wonderland to 2001: A Space Odyssey to Ed Roth’s Kustom Kulture. Native American culture and mythology, only hinted at in the classic adventures, is also much more present in the form of Chief, one of Dope Rider’s new sidekicks. Kirchner’s playful, tongue-in-cheek humor binds together all these influences into stories that mock both the mundane and the nonsensical alike. Paul Kirchner lives in Connecticut. He started his career in the 1970s as an assistant to Wally Wood. His original Dope Rider stories are collected among other early works in the book Awaiting the Collapse. He also created the bus, a surrealistic monthly strip published in Heavy Metal magazine from 1979 to 1985 and illustrated the graphic detective novel Murder by Remote Control written by Janwillem van de Wetering. Paul Kirchner went back to comics during the 2010s with the bus 2 in 2015 and Hieronymus & Bosch in 2018. He continues to insist he has never used drugs, not even for research purposes.

Book Fighting Handguns

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeff Cooper
  • Publisher : Pickle Partners Publishing
  • Release : 2018-12-01
  • ISBN : 1789124891
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Fighting Handguns written by Jeff Cooper and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fighting Handguns, author Jeff Cooper not only takes the reader through the development of this weapon from its beginnings in mid-16th-century Europe through the various iterations of single- and double-action revolvers and semiautomatic pistols, he also discusses some important aspects of carrying and shooting a fighting handgun under combat conditions. “For good or ill, man is a fighting animal. While most feel that this is an unmitigated evil, it may, like most aspects of nature, have its positive side. Certainly man’s combative nature is responsible for most of the massive tragedy of history, but it’s possible that history of any sort just wouldn’t have happened had it not been characteristic of the race to struggle against its environment. And man’s environment, of course, includes man. A placid, gentle, contented creature—a koala, for instance—is nice to contemplate but does not progress, and if it encounters a challenge it simply dies. Whether progress, at the price of a fighting disposition, is worth it is a question, but it’s a bit on the academic side. Man is the way he is, and gets along as he must. Being human, we are involved in strife. Much as we may deplore this, we must master the techniques of strife or perish. “This book is devoted to one of these techniques—the one-hand firearm as used by man against man.”—Jeff Cooper

Book Gender and Authority across Disciplines Space and Time

Download or read book Gender and Authority across Disciplines Space and Time written by Adele Bardazzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection investigates the relationship between gender and authority across geographical contexts, periods and fields. Who is recognized as a legitimate voice in debate and decision-making, and how is that legitimization produced? Through a variety of methodological approaches, the chapters address some of the most pressing and controversial themes under scrutiny in current feminist scholarship and activism, such as pornography, political representation, LGBTI struggles, female genital mutilation, the #MeToo movement, abortion, divorce and consent. Organized into three sections, “Politics,” “Law and Religion,” and “Imaginaries,” the contributors highlight formal and informal aspects of authority, its gendered and racialized configurations, and practices of solidarity, resistance and subversion by traditionally disempowered subjects. In dialogue with feminist scholarship on power and agency, the notion of authority as elaborated here offers a distinctive lens to critique political and epistemic foundations of inequality and oppression, and will be of use to scholars and students across gender studies, sociology, politics, linguistics, theology, history, law, film, and literature.
