Book excerpt: As Jim Bob sat there looking at his father he knew what had to be done. He would have to call his boss and request a leave of absence. His boss was a nice guy and would understand. He would stay on the ranch as long as he was needed, even if it meant losing his part-time job and not finishing college. His family and the ranch were that important to him. After his father suffers a debilitating stroke, Jim Bob Johnson returns to the Johnson family ranch, in the southwestern United States, which has been in the family for three generations. The ranch also has oil wells, and the management of these falls to Jim Bob. His father returns home and cannot do any work. He is still mad at Jim Bob for going off to college. Shortly after his return, Jim Bob runs into his old girlfriend, Lillian. Although they have a rough time getting reacquainted, they soon reconcile their differences and make plans to get married. Book Shadow of a Star and Pecos Crossing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two classic wild westerns in one volume from seven-time Spur Award-winning author Elmer Kelton. Shadow of a Star Deputy Sheriff Jim-Bob McClain isn't sure he's ready to follow in his father's footsteps as the law in Coolridge County. In fact, he has a hard enough time keeping the peace between the drunks in the local saloon. But with tough Sheriff Mont Naylor to back him up he figures he can handle whatever comes his way. Jim-Bob's first real assignment is no piece of cake. He must escort a ruthless outlaw into the hands of justice. All seems well with the lawless killer firmly in Jim-Bob's custody. But nothing prepares him for an angry mob, determined to take the law into their own hands and provide their own brand justice: a hangman's noose. Pecos Crossing Johnny Fristo and Speck Quitman, young, hard-working cowboys from Fort Concho, Texas, have worked six months--at $20 a month--on the Devil's River. Their boss, a hawk-faced cow trader named Larramore, reneges on the money he owes the boys and sneaks out of the cow camp and heads for San Angelo. Fristo is tall and thin, his mind a hundred miles away; Quitman is short, bandy-legged, and "bedazzled by the flash of cards and the slosh of whiskey." The two are as different as sun and moon but are inseparable—and now they have a mission: find Larramore and extract the money he owes them. Book Confusion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph L. Camp Jr.
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-01
  • ISBN : 0674029178
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Confusion written by Joseph L. Camp Jr. and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone has mistaken one thing for another, such as a stranger for an acquaintance. A person who has mistaken two things, Joseph L. Camp argues, even on a massive scale, is still capable of logical thought. In order to make that idea precise, one needs a logic of confused thought that is blind to the distinction between the objects that have been confused. Confused thought and language cannot be characterized as true or false even though reasoning conducted in such language can be classified as valid or invalid. To the extent that philosophers have addressed this issue at all, they take it for granted that confusion is a kind of ambiguity. Camp rejects this notion; his fundamental claim is that confusion is not a mental state. To attribute confusion to someone is to take up a paternalistic stance in evaluating his reasoning. Camp proposes a novel characterization of confusion, and then demonstrates its fruitfulness with several applications in the history of philosophy and the history of science.

Book A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting

Download or read book A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting written by R. K. Sawyer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The days are gone when seemingly limitless numbers of canvasbacks, mallards, and Canada geese filled the skies above the Texas coast. Gone too are the days when, in a single morning, hunters often harvested ducks, shorebirds, and other waterfowl by the hundreds. The hundred-year period from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries brought momentous changes in attitudes and game laws: changes initially prompted by sportsmen who witnessed the disappearance of both the birds and their spectacular habitat. These changes forever affected the state’s storied hunting culture. Yet, as R. K. Sawyer discovered, the rich lore and reminiscences of the era’s hunters and guides who plied the marshy haunts from Beaumont to Brownsville, though fading, remain a colorful and essential part of the Texas outdoor heritage. Gleaned from interviews with sportsmen and guides of decades past as well as meticulous research in news archives, Sawyer’s vivid documentation of Texas’ deep-rooted waterfowl hunting tradition is accompanied by a superb collection of historical and modern photographs. He showcases the hunting clubs, the decoys, the duck and goose calls, the equipment, and the unique hunting practices of the period. By preserving this account of a way of life and a coastal environment that have both mostly vanished, A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting also pays tribute to the efforts of all those who fought to ensure that Texas’ waterfowl legacy would endure. This book will aid their efforts, along with those of coastal residents, birders, wildlife biologists, conservationists, and all who are interested in the state’s natural history and in championing the preservation of waterfowl and wetland resources for the benefit of future generations.

Book Naming the Unnamable

Download or read book Naming the Unnamable written by Tom Dobson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting upon his own prior experiences as Writer, PhD Student embarks on an ethnographic research project which seeks to explain the relationship between Boys’ creative writing and identity. A view of identity as performance is adopted, a main cast of year 6 Boys is assembled, and the stage of the year 6 primary classroom and the secondary school is set. Undertaking participant observation, PhD Student sends his reflections as emails to PhD Supervisor but as their dialogue takes hold, questions relating to the problematic nature of research and representation proliferate. Which identity is PhD Student performing in the classroom: himself, Mr Dobson, Writer or Tom? Is self-reflexivity enough? To what extent can the Boys’ identities ever be known? Rather than silencing these problems, PhD Student looks for a form of writing which lays bare the messiness of research. He rejects the linearity of the traditional form and writes his thesis as a self-conscious fiction: a dialogue on a train between himself, a post/structuralist academic, and You, a humanist non-academic. As PhD Student’s data is analysed, critiqued and deconstructed from both essentialist and interpretivist perspectives, the impossibility of objective representation is explored. Within its own frame of reference, PhD Student’s analysis of the Boys’ writing offers a theoretical framework for thinking about creative writing in terms of identity and agency. However, the thesis-script itself is primarily a methodological critique: one that shows that no matter what is written on pages, between the words, between the letters, there will always be the Unnamable.

Book Rage

  • Author : Bob Woodward
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2020-09-15
  • ISBN : 1982131764
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Rage written by Bob Woodward and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rage is an unprecedented and intimate tour de force of new reporting on the Trump presidency facing a global pandemic, economic disaster and racial unrest. Woodward, the #1 international bestselling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans. In 17 on-the-record interviews with Woodward over seven volatile months—an utterly vivid window into Trump’s mind—the president provides a self-portrait that is part denial and part combative interchange mixed with surprising moments of doubt as he glimpses the perils in the presidency and what he calls the “dynamite behind every door.” At key decision points, Rage shows how Trump’s responses to the crises of 2020 were rooted in the instincts, habits and style he developed during his first three years as president. Revisiting the earliest days of the Trump presidency, Rage reveals how Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats struggled to keep the country safe as the president dismantled any semblance of collegial national security decision making. Rage draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand witnesses as well as participants’ notes, emails, diaries, calendars and confidential documents. Woodward obtained 25 never-seen personal letters exchanged between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who describes the bond between the two leaders as out of a “fantasy film.” Trump insists to Woodward he will triumph over Covid-19 and the economic calamity. “Don’t worry about it, Bob. Okay?” Trump told the author in July. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll get to do another book. You’ll find I was right.”
