Book excerpt: Jigajig is a novel about Africa and the way that it has evolved over the last forty years. Money, sex, power, and politics all play a part but there is no solemnity in this tale, which relies on the Swahili concept, Shauri ya Mungu, meaning 'the affair of God.' This phrase is used liberally in East Africa to indicate that any misfortune is due to the whim of divine authority and not to human mismanagement. The story is related through the eyes of Gavin Oatskin, who began his career as a young economist in an imaginary country called Kenzika and became the CEO of a multi-national organization, rejoicing in the name of FATSO. An honourable man and a true friend of Africa, Gavin is appointed to run the country by the United Nations but the experiment misfires. Told in a series of episodes spread between 1967 and 2005, the action involves a range of colourful associates and moves between Kenzika, Britain, South Africa, and Australia. It is left to the reader to decide whether there is still hope for Africa's future.

A chance meeting with an attractive woman on a coach and Duncan finds himself on the high seas heading for the Coral Sea and adventure. In the company of swashbucklers and desperadoes of every description Duncan braves storm, shipwreck, sharks, crocodiles, massacre and decapitation in this epic romance of survival amongst the head-hunters of the Torres Strait. The tale plays out along golden beaches and on tropical islands washed by the crystalline waters of the Coral Sea. It is a region of extraordinary beauty and danger as Duncan discovers whilst wending his cautious way betwixt piratical thugs on the one hand and ferocious natives on the other. More than a simple adventure Coral Sea Story brings alive those frantic days when the Queensland frontier was wild; when fortune-seekers and squatters, and drunken captains and pearl-divers, and South Sea Island sailors and Torres Strait warriors battled for control of the Coral Sea and its riches. This is Australian history as you've never seen it; big, bold and a ripping yarn.

Book excerpt: The First World War largely directed the course of the twentieth century. Fought on three continents, the war saw 14 million killed and 34 million wounded. Its impact shaped the world we live in today, and the language of the trenches continues to live in the modern consciousness. One of the enduring myths of the First World War is that the experience of the trenches was not talked about. Yet dozens of words entered or became familiar in the English language as a direct result of the soldiers’ experiences. This book looks at how the experience of the First World War changed the English language, adding words that were both in slang and standard military use, and modifying the usage and connotations of existing words and phrases. Illustrated with material from the authors’ collections and photographs of the objects of the war, the book will look at how the words emerged into everyday language.

Book excerpt: The idea of African Otherness has occupied a central role in discourses on cultural production in Africa, whether film, literature, music or the arts. These claims, articulated both by ‘Western' and ‘African' critics and consumers, means that particular criteria and standards are adopted in relation to cultural production in Africa. The claim to African Otherness is gaining new strength in the wake of globalization, but it is also increasingly challenged by a number of contemporary artists. This book deals with the question of relevance and meaning of the signifier in various fields of contemporary cultural production in Africa.
