Book Spirit Possession in Judaism

Download or read book Spirit Possession in Judaism written by Matt Goldish and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary collection of essays is the first to approach the phenomenon of spirit possession among Jews from a multidisciplinary perspective. What beliefs have Jews held about spirit possession? Have Jewish people believed themselves to be possessed by spirits? If so, what sorts of spirits were they? Have Jews' conceptions of possession been the same as those of their Christian and Muslim neighbors? These are some of the questions addressed in these thirteen essays, which together explore spirit possession in a wide range of temporal and geographic contexts. The phenomena known as spirit possession are both very widespread and very difficult to explain. The late Raphael Patai initiated study of spirit possession as found in the Jewish world in the post-Talmudic period by taking a folkloric and anthropological approach to the subject. Other scholars have opened up new avenues of inquiry through discussions of the topic in connection with Jewish mystical and magical traditions. The essays in this collection expand the variety of approaches to the subject, addressing Jewish possession phenomena from the points of view of religion, mysticism, literature, anthropology, psychology, history, and folklore. Scholarly views and popular traditions, benevolent spirits and malevolent shades, exorcism, social control, messianic implications, madness, literary structure, and a host of other topics are brought into the discussion of spirit possession in Jewish culture. This juxtaposition of approaches among the essays in this volume, some of which analyze the same texts in different ways, creates a broad foundation on which to contemplate the meaning of spirit possession.

She’s given us an immensely literate and serious, contemporary Jewish theology. Breath of Life is a spiritual tour de force.” -Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, Scholar in residence at Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco, and author of many books including Kabbalah: A Love Story "Any reader keen to cultivate a robust spirituality should read this little book. Jews and Christians may discover here something to talk about—scriptures we share and a quality of God we have in common.” -John R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shekhinah/Spirit is a daring rediscovery of the role of the Spirit of God that runs through both Judaism and Christianity. It explores the rich and diverse history of Jewish interpretations of the divine presence and shows how many profound Jewish insights impact or relate to Christian understanding of the Holy Spirit. The author argues for the viability of a "Spirit Christology" that can be understood from within the covenant relationship and points to the exciting implications such directions will have for the doctrine of the Trinity among Christians. At the same time it links Judaism and Christianity in dialogue to a common ground in the saving activity of the God of Israel. Shekhinah/Spirit is a provocative attempt to deepen the grounds of discussion in the Jewish-Christian dialogue. It moves beyond the sticking point of Christological disputes to consider broader aspects of the questions of God's plan. It explores three important areas in depth: the question of exclusivism in election, evil, and eschatology. The author works with a series of major problem areas in order to help bridge misunderstandings and roadblocks by using a process of relational theology. This book is full of rich insights into the spirituality of both God's presence and God's spirit in the Judeo-Christian tradition.
