Book The New Education in Religion

Download or read book The New Education in Religion written by Henry Berkowitz and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Education in Religion: With a Curriculum of Jewish Studies The traveler into a new country is safest with a guide. The guide must be familiar with the ground to be traversed, and through his knowledge and experience, must command full confidence. Our children as they enter the Religious School are to be guided into a strange and untried domain. The teacher is the guide to whom they look with unquestioning confidence in his knowledge and sincerity. To merit this trust and to fulfil it, is to have at once the greatest of responsibilities and the most joyous of privileges. That trust falls upon every parent when the mysterious gift of a new life - that of a child, comes into the home, for upon the influence of the parental example, training and instruction, more than upon aught else will depend the whole future of the child's character, conduct and soul culture. The first school from Patriarchal days was the home, and the home still is and will ever remain the earliest and most important school of child-training. "A child's mind," said one of the Rabbis, "is like a clean tablet on which nothing has been written." The first records on that tablet are made in the home and their impress is indelible. Therefore, every earnest parent is eager to find help to be a safe and wise teacher, friend and guide to his child. These lessons aim to place within the reach of parents the results of the study and experience of those who have gone over the ground in advance. Book Our Educational Problem

Download or read book Our Educational Problem written by Elson Irving Rexford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Educational Problem: The Jewish Population and the Protestant Schools The second important step in educational matters was taken in 1824, when the Fabrique act was passed authorizing each Roman Catholic parish to devote one quarter of its annual Church revenue to the support of a school for the parish. Under these two acts temporary provision was made for elementary education in a large number of the English and French sections of the Province during the first quarter of the past century. The first public elementary school act for the Province was passed in the year 1829. This act provided that five trustees, elected in each parish or township, should have the management of schools in that district. The act provided for a limited number of schools and a grant of 20 was paid by the Government to each teacher on condition that the school was in operation at least 90 days, and had an average attendance of 20 pupils. These schools were for the rural districts, they were voluntary, free, and without taxation. Although the schools established under this act took their colour as to language and religious teaching, from the communities which maintained them, they were common schools, recognising no religious distinction in the community. As these schools were supported by the Government and the grants were paid through the local member of the Legislature, the people in the French districts of the Province regarded this system as a political propaganda for the destruction of their language and religion. The schools, therefore, under this act met with only a moderate measure of success. About 1300 schools, however, were established under the provision of this act with an attendance of about 36,000 pupils.
