Book Money Power and Influence in Eighteenth Century Lithuania

Download or read book Money Power and Influence in Eighteenth Century Lithuania written by Adam Teller and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been claimed that Jews have a penchant for capitalism and capitalist economic activity. With this book, Adam Teller challenges that assumption. Examining how Jews achieved their extraordinary success within the late feudal economy of the eighteenth-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, he shows that economic success did not necessarily come through any innate entrepreneurial skills, but through identifying and exploiting economic niches in the pre-modern economy—in particular, the monopoly on the sale of grain alcohol. Jewish economic activity was a key factor in the development of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and it greatly enhanced the incomes, and thereby the social and political status, of the noble magnates, including the powerful Radziwiłł family. In turn, with the magnate's backing, Jews were able to leverage their own economic success into high status in estate society. Over time, relations within Jewish society began to change, putting less value on learning and pedigree and more on wealth and connections with the estate owners. This groundbreaking book exemplifies how the study of Jewish economic history can shed light on a crucial mechanism of Jewish social integration. In the Polish-Lithuanian setting, Jews were simultaneously a despised religious minority and key economic players, with a consequent standing that few could afford to ignore.

Book Evolutions of Jewish Character in British Fiction

Download or read book Evolutions of Jewish Character in British Fiction written by Aaron Kaiserman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutions of Jewish Character in British Fiction: Nor Yet Redeemed builds upon recent scholarship concerning representations of Jews in the British Romantic and Victorian periods. Existing studies identify common trends, or link positive Jewish portrayals to authorial interests and social movements; this volume argues that understanding developments in Jewish portrayals can be enhanced by looking at the way antecedent Jewish characters and tropes are negotiated within developing literary movements. Evolutions of Jewish Character in British Fiction examines how the contradictory nature of Jewish stereotypes, combined with the Jews’ complicated entanglement of religion, race, and nationality, presented an opportunity for writers to think about the gap between representations and individuals. The tension between stereotyping and Realist impulses leads to a diversity of Jewish types, but also to an increasingly muddled sense of Jewish interests. This confusion over Jewish identity generated in turn a subgenre of texts that sought to educate readers about Jews by interrogating stereotypes and thinking about the Jews’ relationships to host cultures. In a literary landscape increasingly defined by individuality and Realism, outcast and secretive Jews provided subjects ready-made to reveal the inadequacies of surfaces for understanding the interior self. The replacement of simplistic Jewish stereotypes with morally complex Jewish characters is an effect both of Realism’s valuation of interiority and of the historical movement towards expanding the definitions of British identity.

Book Images in Transition

Download or read book Images in Transition written by Abba Rubin and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1984-11-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ch. 1 (pp. 3-46) surveys the history of the return of the Jews to England, from the Marranos in the 16th century to the debate on the readmission of the Jews in Cromwell's time, and the debate on the "Jew Bill" in 1753 which rekindled latent antisemitism. The rest of the book examines numerous novels and plays which reflected the current attitude towards Jews. The negative stereotype predominated at first - e.g. in works by Dryden, Defoe, Smollett (in particular), Richardson, and in the revival of Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" in the mid-18th century - but a change occurred in 1793 when Richard Cumberland depicted the Jew as a positive character in his play "The Jew". Thereafter, more favorable portrayals appeared in English literature, based on knowledge and on experience of the Jewish reality rather than on ignorance and prejudice, until by 1830 the numbers of negative and positive portrayals were equal.
