Download or read book Jew Jitsu written by Dmitri Shufutinsky and published by Wicked Son. This book was released on 2024-10-10 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israeli public relations are notoriously lackluster. For years, the promotion of the Start-Up Nation and invention of the cherry tomato were used as tactics of advocating for and supporting Israel. In modern times, liberal Zionists play up Israel’s democratic values and Tel Aviv pride to defend it against “pinkwashing,” while conservative Zionists have justified Israel’s right to exist by pointing to the Holocaust and the Bible. None of these methods have succeeded in preventing or stopping the assault by far-left, woke ideology against Zionism, Jewish identity, or the aboriginal status of the Jews to their homeland: Israel. It’s time for a strategic shift in combating anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. In this Zionist manifesto, journalist, Israel Defense Forces veteran, and scholar Dmitri Shufutinsky unpacks how Zionist advocacy has gotten to this precarious point and outlines a new method for discrediting the feeble ideology behind much of the rising anti-Semitism in supposedly enlightened spaces. Jew Jitsu: Turning Our Enemies’ Arguments Against Them will inform confounded pro-Israel advocates and donors on the current situation plaguing educational institutions; highlight the Neo-Marxist and Islamist ideology leading this campaign; and give Jewish students and their allies the tools they need to rid academia and progressive movements of this pseudo-historical and bigoted movement’s appeal.

Download or read book A Cultural History of Jewish Dress written by Eric Silverman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of Jewish Dress is the first comprehensive account of how Jews have been distinguished by their appearance from Ancient Israel to the present. For centuries Jews have dressed in distinctive ways to communicate their devotion to God, their religious identity, and the proper earthly roles of men and women. This lively work explores the rich history of Jewish dress, examining how Jews and non-Jews alike debated and legislated Jewish attire in different places, as well as outlining the big debates on dress within the Jewish community today. Focusing on tensions over gender, ethnic identity and assimilation, each chapter discusses the meaning and symbolism of a specific era or type of Jewish dress. What were biblical and rabbinic fashions? Why was clothing so important to immigrant Jews in America? Why do Hassidic Jews wear black? When did yarmulkes become bar mitzvah souvenirs? The book also offers the first analysis of how young Jewish adults today announce on caps, shirts, and even undergarments their striving to transform Jewishness from a religious and historical heritage into an ethnic identity that is hip, racy, and irreverent. Fascinating and accessibly written, A Cultural History of Jewish Dress will appeal to anybody interested in the central role of clothing in defining Jewish identity.

Download or read book The Routledge History of Antisemitism written by Mark Weitzman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antisemitism is a topic on which there is a wide gap between scholarly and popular understanding, and as concern over antisemitism has grown, so too have the debates over how to understand and combat it. This handbook explores its history and manifestations, ranging from its origins to the internet. Since the Holocaust, many in North America and Europe have viewed antisemitism as a historical issue with little current importance. However, recent events show that antisemitism is not just a matter of historical interest or of concern only to Jews. Antisemitism has become a major issue confronting and challenging our world. This volume starts with explorations of antisemitism in its many different shapes across time and then proceeds to a geographical perspective, covering a broad scope of experiences across different countries and regions. The final section discusses the manifestations of antisemitism in its varied cultural and social forms. With an international range of contributions across 40 chapters, this is an essential volume for all readers of Jewish and non-Jewish history alike.

Download or read book Professions of a Lucky Jew written by Benno Weiser Varon and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1932, Benno Weiser was studying medicine in Vienna. During a brawl he rescued a fellow Jewish student by cracking the skull of a huge Nazi with two outsized metal keys, while some thirty Nazis watched. He considers this event his rite of passage — proving to himself that “Jews are no cowards.” Life would give him many an opportunity to prove it again. A Jewish Rambo? Not at all. Fellow Viennese remember him for making them laugh. He wrote, directed, and performed in literary cabarets. “All I could take along from Nazi Vienna,” writes Weiser Varon, “was my accent.” But he also exported his fighting spirit. As Ecuador’s first syndicated columnist, blending drama with satire, he dispensed faith to those who rooted for the Allies and heartburn to the powerful Nazi colony. The Axis powers sponsored seven weeklies to counteract his influence, there was an interpellation in parliament, a “promise” by the minister of the interior to shut him up, an op-ed duel with a Vichy diplomat. The New York Times, reporting on his struggle, called him one of Latin America’s best known columnists. In 1946 the World Zionist Organization drafted him into its campaign to convince the nations of Latin America of the justice of the Jewish fight for statehood. Varon’s niche in history is the U.N. Palestine Partition Resolution of 1947: with a colleague, he is credited for getting the decisive Latin American “yes” votes. In 1964 Golda Meir appointed him ambassador to a succession of Latin American countries. In 1970 Varon survived an assassination attempt by Palestinian terrorists in Asunción. In 1972 he retired from diplomacy, returned to journalism and started teaching at Boston University. Varon met Albert Einstein and Aleksandr Kerensky as well as the Who’s Who of Latin-American writers, painters, intellectuals, and statesmen such as Perón, Castro, the Somozas, Stroessner. He also placed second-best in a joke contest with Bob Hope and, together with his actress-wife, wrote a play, “A Letter to the Times,” which was produced in English and in Spanish. In this autobiography by a lifelong Zionist, many of Weiser Varon’s experiences as an émigré, a Jew or a diplomat — recounted with the wit of an entertainer — sound more like fiction than real life.

Download or read book Urban Religious Events written by Paul Bramadat and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How might we best understand the relationship between the vibrant religious landscapes we see in many cities and contemporary urban social processes? Through case studies drawn from around the world, contributors explore the ways in which these processes interact in cities. This book argues that religious events – including rituals, processions, and festivals – are not only choreographies of sacred traditions, but they are also creative disruptions that reveal how urban cultural hierarchies are experienced and contested. Exposing the power dynamics behind these events, this book shows how performative uses of urban space serve to destabilize dominant genealogies and lineages around urban identities just as they lay claims to cultural supremacy or heritage. Through exploring the affective disruptions and political controversies caused by religious events, the contributors engage theoretical discussions in urban studies, the sociology of religion and the ethnography of ritual. This book is a significant contribution to understanding emerging patterns in contemporary religion and also for theories related to heritagization, eventization, and urbanization.
