Book Jesus Would Vote for a Black President

Download or read book Jesus Would Vote for a Black President written by Peter Opa and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We've been told America is a Christian country. Yet, we've all heard the misguided assumption that "America is not ready for a black president." In a country of racial diversity like the U.S., leadership must transcend race. Jesus Christ is not prejudiced. Therefore, denying votes to somebody because of their skin color raises serious questions about American Christianity. If (white) Christians are so prejudiced against the black man in America, why do they send bibles and missionaries to preach the love of God in Africa? America is not ready for a black president, but is ready to share her Jesus with Africans? Christians would not vote for a black president, but would share communion with black people? How about if, in response to the prayer for a "God-fearing" president, God chooses a black person to lead the country? Dealing with these issues in a way that will move America forward and salvage her image are the thrust of this book.

Book excerpt: Jesus for President is a radical manifesto to awaken the Christian political imagination, reminding us that our ultimate hope lies not in partisan political options but in Jesus and the incarnation of the peculiar politic of the church as a people "set apart" from this world. In what can be termed lyrical theology, Jesus for President poetically weaves together words and images to sing (rather than dictate) its message. It is a collaboration of Shane Claiborne's writing and stories, Chris Haw's reflections and research, and Chico Fajardo-Heflin's art and design. Drawing upon the work of biblical theologians, the lessons of church history, and the examples of modern-day saints and ordinary radicals, Jesus for President stirs the imagination of what the Church could look like if it placed its faith in Jesus instead of Caesar. A fresh look at Christianity and empire, Jesus for President transcends questions of "Should I vote or not?" and "Which candidate?" by thinking creatively about the fundamental issues of faith and allegiance. It's written for those who seek to follow Jesus, rediscover the spirit of the early church, and incarnate the kingdom of God.

Book Racialism and the Media

Download or read book Racialism and the Media written by Venise T. Berry and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racialism and Media: Black Jesus, Black Twitter and the First Black American President is an exploration of how the nature of racial ideology has changed in our society. Yes, there are still ugly racists who push uglier racism, but there are also popular constructions of race routinely woven into mediated images and messages. This book examines selected exemplars of racialism moving beyond traditional racism. In the twenty-first century, we need a more nuanced understanding of racial constructions. Denouncing anything and everything problematic as racist or racism simply does not work, especially if we want to move toward a real solution to America's race problems. Racialism involves images and messages that are produced, distributed, and consumed repetitively and intertextually based on stereotypes, biased framing, and historical myths about African American culture. These images and messages are eventually normalized through the media, ultimately shaping and influencing societal ideology and behavior. Through the lens of critical race theory these chapters examine issues of intersectionality in Crash, changing Black identity in Black-ish, the balancing of stereotypes in prime-time TV's Black male and female roles, the power of Black images and messages in advertising, the cultural wealth offered through the Black Twitter platform, biased media framing of the first Black American president, the satirical parody of Black Jesus, contemporary Zip Coon stereotypes in film, the popularity of ghettofabulous black culture, and, finally, the evolution of black representation in science fiction.

Book excerpt: In a nation where the majority of Evangelical and Catholic populations elected Donald J. Trump to the highest office in the land, many have been left scratching their heads. How did Jesus' teachings result in a leader of the free world who has mocked the disabled, sexually assaulted women, and openly made racist and xenophobic statements? If Jesus was President, how would his policies measure up against those of the Trump Administration? Would Christians of the Trump Era support a President Jesus or vote him out after a single term? Arguing that Jesus was highly political, Messina uses sharp wit and humor to present his positions on social policy based on the Gospels while making comparisons to President Donald Trump and the GOP who often invoke his name.

Book Who Would Jesus Vote For

Download or read book Who Would Jesus Vote For written by Philip J. Gentlesk and published by Liberty Hill Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2020 will be known for many circumstances this year, but one of them being that of it being an election year during a time of unrest.During a time of civil discontent, heightened by a global pandemic, the question remains of who will step up as president (and government representatives) to lead the United States to recovery, reconciliation, and renewal? In the new book, Who Would Jesus Vote For?, author Phil Gentlesk uses the pages of the Bible to help in displaying how much the current Democratic party has drifted from its foundations as the "party of the working man."Recalling his first election memories of President Eisenhower winning his election, Phil remembers learning about the candidates and what they stood for, while seeing what his community was looking at most for their next leader of the free world. This thrill for election time is what inspired him to write Who Would Jesus Vote For?, knowing there would be young Americans voting for the first time this year who might be overwhelmed by the politics and social situations happening around them.Phil shares with readers that the election should be seen as a spiritual battle as well as a political battle, offering perspectives on how the current Democratic party has spiritual conflicts that those who are believers in God should be aware of when casting their ballots. The story of David comes to mind to Phil as a story God uses to show readers a leader chosen by God acts on His truths and knows what is the right thing to do. David wasn't told to kill the giant Goliath, but knew inside this was right in God's eyes. For the year 2020, make your vote count by choosing the candidate that will do what is right and glorify God instead of glorify himself.

James Kennedy believes it will be a watershed moment that could impact our very survival as a nation under God. Values voters–people whose political views and votes are based on their faith in God–are being targeted as never before. As we move forward in the campaign season, the significant players will debate terrorism, radical Islam, nuclear threats, global warming, social issues, gay marriage, immigration, education, health care, and many other essential issues that can create sharp ideological divisions. Into this overwhelmingly complex political situation, Dr. Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe bring a clear, compelling, and nonpartisan exploration of what God’s Word has to say on these critical matters. This timely, helpful, and hopeful book will enable you to do just that.

Book The Jefferson Bible

Download or read book The Jefferson Bible written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Wyatt North Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2014-01-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Download or read book Living God s Future Now written by Samuel Wells and published by Canterbury Press. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the most imaginative and energetic church response to the pandemic has been that of HeartEdge, the interdenominational church renewal movement founded at St Martin in the Fields by Samuel Wells but now extending beyond the UK to Europe, North America and Australia. From serving thousands of meals on London’s streets to becoming, in all but name, an online conference centre and theological college offering hundreds of events, one outstanding feature of its programme has been Samuel Wells’ monthly conversations about the future of the Church with leading figures from Britain and America, attended by large online audiences. This volume offers a distillation of those conversations which, instead of being preoccupied with decline, focus on what Christian presence and practice might look like in the world that is being reshaped by what the pandemic has revealed, and the theology that is needed to sustain such a vision.

Book Jesus and John Wayne How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation

Download or read book Jesus and John Wayne How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation written by Kristin Kobes Du Mez and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The “paradigm-influencing” book (Christianity Today) that is fundamentally transforming our understanding of white evangelicalism in America. Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping, revisionist history of the last seventy-five years of white evangelicalism, revealing how evangelicals have worked to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism—or in the words of one modern chaplain, with “a spiritual badass.” As acclaimed scholar Kristin Du Mez explains, the key to understanding this transformation is to recognize the centrality of popular culture in contemporary American evangelicalism. Many of today’s evangelicals might not be theologically astute, but they know their VeggieTales, they’ve read John Eldredge’s Wild at Heart, and they learned about purity before they learned about sex—and they have a silver ring to prove it. Evangelical books, films, music, clothing, and merchandise shape the beliefs of millions. And evangelical culture is teeming with muscular heroes—mythical warriors and rugged soldiers, men like Oliver North, Ronald Reagan, Mel Gibson, and the Duck Dynasty clan, who assert white masculine power in defense of “Christian America.” Chief among these evangelical legends is John Wayne, an icon of a lost time when men were uncowed by political correctness, unafraid to tell it like it was, and did what needed to be done. Challenging the commonly held assumption that the “moral majority” backed Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020 for purely pragmatic reasons, Du Mez reveals that Trump in fact represented the fulfillment, rather than the betrayal, of white evangelicals’ most deeply held values: patriarchy, authoritarian rule, aggressive foreign policy, fear of Islam, ambivalence toward #MeToo, and opposition to Black Lives Matter and the LGBTQ community. A much-needed reexamination of perhaps the most influential subculture in this country, Jesus and John Wayne shows that, far from adhering to biblical principles, modern white evangelicals have remade their faith, with enduring consequences for all Americans.

Book Jesus and Justice

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Goodwin Heltzel
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-21
  • ISBN : 0300155735
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book Jesus and Justice written by Peter Goodwin Heltzel and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book investigates the increasing visibility and influence of evangelical Christians in recent American politics with a focus on racial justice. Peter Goodwin Heltzel considers four evangelical social movements: Focus on the Family, the National Association of Evangelicals, Christian Community Development Association, and Sojourners. The political motives and actions of evangelical groups are founded upon their conceptions of Jesus Christ, Heltzel contends. He traces the roots of contemporary evangelical politics to the prophetic black Christianity tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the socially engaged evangelical tradition of Carl F. H. Henry. Heltzel shows that the basic tenets of King's and Henry's theologies have led their evangelical heirs toward a prophetic evangelicalism in a shade of blue green--blue symbolizing the tragedy of black suffering in the Americas, and green symbolizing the hope of a prophetic evangelical engagement with poverty, AIDS, and the environment. This fresh theological understanding of evangelical political groups shines new light on the ways evangelicals shape and are shaped by broader American culture.

Book The Wheat and Tares and the Ten Virgins

Download or read book The Wheat and Tares and the Ten Virgins written by James Elliott and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wheat and Tares and the Ten Virgins are two parables that are not often talked about by theologians, bishops, and the fivefold ministry of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. And this is due in part, in my opinion, because there is an obscurity as to who are the tares and the five foolish virgins in those parables that the Lord Jesus is referring to, who are not only in the world, but also who call the Lord Jesus as their Savior. So, the tares that I’m going to put a spotlight on are those preachers and false teachers of God's word be they called Pastor, Bishop, Apostle, Elder, Father, Minister, Reverend, Dr. Reverend, Reverend Dr, whatever title these tare preachers and false teachers of God’s word prefer. And of the doctrines the devils that have been sown, through them, into the body of Christ, as well as who are the five foolish virgins out of the Ten who got left behind.
