Book excerpt: This is the true story of a young boy who grew up with a deep desire for love and acceptance. Instead he was harshly abused and mistreated by his alcoholic preacher father and older brother. He grew into a violent man whose life consisted of fights, and scrapes with law enforcement. He learned to run when things got really tough. Often, he sought the will of God for his life, rising from being a victim to an overcomer several times, however drugs and alcohol always pulled him back down. He had a beautiful wife and children that he loved dearly, but when things got tough, he'd walk away into the ready arms of alcohol and other women. This would be his undoing. Finally, one day in 1984, a shootout left a man dead and him in the county jail on a murder charge. Thinking his life was over, he attempted to end his life, but two ministers of God felt led to pray with him, thus preventing his death. Finally, in an honest attempt to be set free from his guilt and pain, he cried out to God, and God saved him and set him free. He found that God was not finished with him and discovered his life had just begun. This story is a must read for evangelical use or prison ministry, for it points those who are going astray including those already in jails or prisons to the cross of Calvary and to a loving, forgiving Savior who will set them free too. Jimmy Windham has been in a maximum-security prison in the South Carolina prison system for over 34 years. Though his life and testimony have won many men to Christ; he still requests prayers for the strength of Christ in his everyday life. Bro. Jimmy is still in prison, but by God's anointing on his life, he is standing in faith and still testifying of God's delivering power over sin and brokenness.

Download or read book Jesus In The Jail written by Samee Solanky and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (1) Revival began in the Olmos high-security prison (Argentina, South America), with half of its 3,000 inmates now believers. This revival spread to 200 other prisons. An estimated 25 percent of all prisoners in Argentina are now Christians. One prison, Cristo la Unica Esperanza, has become a completely (100 percent) evangelical prison in Latin America. Approximately 250 pastors work in prisons in Argentina. (2) The success story of Bellavista Prison (Columbia, Central America), a maximum-security prison in Medellin that was often called “hell on earth,” is an inspiration. Through prayer and bold Christian witness, the prison has seen a remarkable turning of hardened criminals to Christ and the end of rampant murderousness. Many inmates are now believers, and there is regular prayer, fasting, and evangelism in this prison, and even a Christian radio station has been formed there. A Bible institute has also been formed in this prison, training inmates to minister both in prison and after release. If God can do this in South America, in Central America, in Westchester County Jail (NY), in Metropolitan Detention Center (NY), and in Otisville Prison-Camp (NY), then HE can do this in other prisons of the United States of America and the world, too. Is there anything too hard for the Lord?

Download or read book Let My People Go written by Stan Moody and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The judgment scene in Matthew 25 is a call for believers in Jesus Christ to get out of our clubhouses and onto the streets, where the “least of these my brothers” (v.40) may be found. Let My People Go is a twelve-step invitation to our American church culture to examine what we are supposed to be doing as Christians, what we are doing, and whether what we are doing is standing in the way of what we are supposed to be doing. The man who deeply affected author Stan Moody as a Christian was a brilliant, sixty-four-year-old convicted sex offender by the name of Sheldon Weinstein. On April 24, 2009, Shelly died in solitary confinement at Maine State Prison of a ruptured spleen about an hour after Moody requested toilet paper for him. Moody has chronicled his death in a narrative titled “Death in B117.” With America now boasting 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, the last vestige of hope for these discarded citizens in our jails and prisons and on our streets is a faith community now facing declining membership and shrinking revenues. Poverty and homelessness has at last come home; how we respond to it is a reflection of the seriousness of our faith.

Download or read book Jesus on Death Row written by Prof. Mark Osler and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the most infamous criminal proceeding in history--the trial of Jesus of Nazareth--have to tell us about capital punishment in the United States? Jesus Christ was a prisoner on death row. If that statement surprises you, consider this fact: of all the roles that Jesus played--preacher, teacher, healer, mentor, friend--none features as prominently in the gospels as this one, a criminal indicted and convicted of a capital offense. Now consider another fact: the arrest, trial, and execution of Jesus bear remarkable similarities to the American criminal justice system, especially in capital cases. From the use of paid informants to the conflicting testimony of witnesses to the denial of clemency, the elements in the story of Jesus' trial mirror the most common components in capital cases today. Finally, consider a question: How might we see capital punishment in this country differently if we realized that the system used to condemn the Son of God to death so closely resembles the system we use in capital cases today? Should the experience of Jesus' trial, conviction, and execution give us pause as we take similar steps to place individuals on death row today? These are the questions posed by this surprising, challenging, and enlightening book

Book When Prophecy Fails

Download or read book When Prophecy Fails written by Leon Festinger and published by Start Classics. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study reported in this volume grew out of some theoretical work one phase of which bore specifically on the behavior of individuals in social movements that made specific (and unfulfilled) prophecies. We had been forced to depend chiefly on historical records to judge the adequacy of our theoretical ideas until we by chance discovered the social movement that we report in this book. At the time we learned of it the movement was in mid-career but the prophecy about which it was centered had not yet been disconfirmed. We were understandably eager to undertake a study that could test our theoretical ideas under natural conditions. That we were able to do this study was in great measure due to the support obtained through the Laboratory for Research in Social Relations of the University of Minnesota. This study is a project of the Laboratory and was carried out while we were all members of its staff. We should also like to acknowledge the help we received through a grant-in-aid from the Ford Foundation to one of the authors a grant that made preliminary exploration of the field situation possible.
