Book excerpt: We live at a time in church history when there's so little evidence of the impact of the Gospel in our societies despite so much 'spiritual' activities. There are mass open air crusades in which evangelists claim thousands and even millions are converted, yet no mush evidence of transformed lives. Conferences, seminars, retreats, night prayers drawing crowds are held day in day out. But all we see is an increasing level of corruption and wickedness in our politics, economy, education and religion. Infidelity and divorce rates in the church as well as among ministers are daily on the increase. What is the problem? Many people think the body of Christ need to pray more and more and repent more of our individual, family, generational and national sins. This is not absolutely true. Rather, we need to sow the right Seed of God's Message. Without this, our repentance, prayer and fasting are just like watering weeds. The real problem is that the church has deviated from preaching the original gospel message that Jesus Himself and the Apostles preached and handed over to the church. What we hear all over the place today, in churches and on air, are a total diversion, which Apostle Paul calls 'another gospel'. Today, you can hear a one-hour or more messages from 'great men of God' without them mentioning Jesus, what He came to do, and accomplished on the Cross at Calvary. Many have even specialized on materialistic gospel where all they preach is how to make it in life. They define themselves by what they possess and not how much they are becoming like Christ. Some others major in demonology. They focus their listeners on human enemies so much that their people become enemy conscious instead of Christ conscious. Thus they create around their people a life of insecurity, anxiety, fear and worries. Some preach nothing but law, which can never save or transform anybody. If it could, Jesus did not need to come and suffer, die and resurrect to redeem us to God. Some others mix law with the true gospel of grace This book will help refocus us on the pure gospel message of grace. The general belief was that here was a man who could be counted upon to tell the truth; and, enemies though they were, they did not venture to address Him otherwise than in harmony with this view of his character. Master, said they, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man, for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us, therefore, what thinkest thou? What I want to accomplish this evening is to per suade you, young men, or at least some of you, that for us of these times there is no better wisdom than to do sincerely what those people did insincerely, namely, to take our hard questions of conduct to Jesus Christ, and to use our utmost endeavors to dis cover what He thinks about them, how He would meet them were he mixing in the social life ofour day, letting himself be spoken to in homely phrase by. Anybody whom He happened to meet, shutting his ears to no appeal, hospitable to every interrogation as it came. There is, to be sure, no lack of teachers; we are overwhelmed with the multitude of our counsellors, and yet in the face of it all something prompts the cry, Master, what thinkest thou? But look, for a few moments, before we go any further, at these qualifications of a guide in matters moral and religious as Pharisee and Herodian define them for us in the text. They are these: (1) per sonal truthfulness, (2) adequate knowledge, (3) free dom from the bias that comes of fear. Thou art true, they said to Christ (recognizing his personal sincerity), and teachest the way of God in truth (recognizing his acquaintance with the facts), and regardest not the person of men (recognizing his entire freedom from timidity). Now, setting aside all question as to the divinity of Christ and his right to rule our thoughts on the score of his having come down from heaven to do so, is it not a great thing of itself that we should have in Him one of whom even so much as this may honestly be said, that He is truthful, competent, and fearless.
