Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Jesus present in the ghetto? The poetic new book Jesus and the Ghetto answers back that Jesus and his teachings are alive and well in the ghetto. This book could well be about any inner city in the world, since most major cities have ghettoes. Since I am more familiar with the Black person's persona, I am primarily shedding light on the conditions of Black people who live in poverty in America, and how a hope in Christ can lead them from living in poverty. In the first part of his book, author Frederick L. Smith, Jr. believes his poems encourage poor people to find a better way of life. The second part expresses things from the viewpoint of God, while the third part is my own observations and the way to rise above poverty and ghetto life. Set in the late 1980s in Cincinnati and Philadelphia, Jesus and the Ghetto is a hopeful book. It looks toward God and inner strength for us to set goals and find ways to accomplish them. About the Author: Frederick L. Smith, Jr. knew he wanted to be a writer at age thirteen. Now retired, he is a community volunteer, and is inspired by his wife, children and grandchildren. He lives in Cincinnati. Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/JesusAndTheGhetto.htm

Her eyes were dark and soft as a thousand midnights, and so was her hair. Her breast stood up like taillights on a ’59 Cadillac, she was a 34-28-36 brick house. Her lips were round and full, and her tongue tasted like July Jam. She was as fat as a swamp possum with the mumps and looked so good when this soul sister winked at a church deacon. They immediately had to give him artificial respiration. Go on and buy the book and read the rest of it. It’ll blow your mind how her pimp wanted to use a certain thing on her to get rid of her and he got some relatives living today using the same thing. If that wasn’t bad enough, this same pimp mistreated Jesus in the hood. Go ahead and buy this book, and be thrilled, enlightened, informed . . . and very amazed.

Book No Neutral Ground

Download or read book No Neutral Ground written by Pete Portal and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world - often described as a kind of heaven on earth. Yet for the majority of its inhabitants it is hell. Apartheid-spawned ghettoes are everywhere, and for those living in Manenberg - a coloured township on the Cape Flats, purpose-built by the apartheid government as part of its forced removal plan - life is just as marginal today as it was during apartheid. The main differences now are the rampant drug use and widespread gang presence. No Neutral Ground is a gripping account of Pete Portal's move from London to Manenberg, of addicts and gangsters meeting Jesus and being transformed, and how he went from living with a heroin addict to establishing a church community - and all the heartbreak and failure along the way. This is a story of mighty works of God, as well as relapse, hopelessness and despair; the miraculous and the mundane, heaven and hell, all balanced on a knife edge. Offering searing insight and an inspiring vision of faith, Pete asks why anyone would choose this way of life, if giving up our lives for others is worth it - and what the church could become if we were willing to risk it all to reach the forgotten and the lost.

Book God and Government in the Ghetto

Download or read book God and Government in the Ghetto written by Michael Leo Owens and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, as government agencies have encouraged faith-based organizations to help ensure social welfare, many black churches have received grants to provide services to their neighborhoods’ poorest residents. This collaboration, activist churches explain, is a way of enacting their faith and helping their neighborhoods. But as Michael Leo Owens demonstrates in God and Government in the Ghetto, this alliance also serves as a means for black clergy to reaffirm their political leadership and reposition moral authority in black civil society. Drawing on both survey data and fieldwork in New York City, Owens reveals that African American churches can use these newly forged connections with public agencies to influence policy and government responsiveness in a way that reaches beyond traditional electoral or protest politics. The churches and neighborhoods, Owens argues, can see a real benefit from that influence—but it may come at the expense of less involvement at the grassroots. Anyone with a stake in the changing strategies employed by churches as they fight for social justice will find God and Government in the Ghetto compelling reading.

Book Alive in God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Radcliffe
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 1472970225
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Alive in God written by Timothy Radcliffe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Christianity touch the imagination of our contemporaries when ever fewer people in the West identify as religious? Timothy Radcliffe argues we must show how everything we believe is an invitation to live fully. God says: 'I put before you life and death: choose life'. Anyone who understands the beauty and messiness of human life – novelists, poets, filmmakers and so on – can be our allies, whether they believe or not. The challenge is not today's secularism but its banality. We accompany the disciples as they struggle to understand this strange man who heals, casts out demons and offers endless forgiveness. In the face of death, he teaches them what it means to be alive in God. Then he embraces all that afflicts and crushes humanity. Finally, Radcliffe explores what it means for us to be alive spiritually, physically, sacramentally, justly and prayerfully. The result is a compelling new understanding of the words of Jesus: 'I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May God Avenge Their Blood: a Holocaust Memoir Triptych presents three memoirs by the Yiddish writer Rachmil Bryks (1912–1974). In "Those Who Didn't Survive," Bryks portrays inter-war life in his shtetl Skarżysko-Kamienna, Poland with great flair and rich anthropological detail, rendering a haunting collective portrait of an annihilated community. "The Fugitives" vividly charts the confusion and terror of the early days of World War II in the industrial city of Łódź and elsewhere. In the final memoir, "From Agony to Life," Bryks tells of his imprisonment in Auschwitz and other camps. Taken together, the triptych takes the reader on a wide-ranging journey from Hasidic life before the Holocaust to the chaos of the early days of war and then to the horrors of Nazi captivity. This translation by Yermiyahu Ahron Taub brings the extraordinary memoirs of an important Yiddish writer to English-language readers for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling account of Christianity’s Jewish beginnings, from one of the world’s leading scholars of ancient religion How did a group of charismatic, apocalyptic Jewish missionaries, working to prepare their world for the impending realization of God's promises to Israel, end up inaugurating a movement that would grow into the gentile church? Committed to Jesus’s prophecy—“The Kingdom of God is at hand!”—they were, in their own eyes, history's last generation. But in history's eyes, they became the first Christians. In this electrifying social and intellectual history, Paula Fredriksen answers this question by reconstructing the life of the earliest Jerusalem community. As her account arcs from this group’s hopeful celebration of Passover with Jesus, through their bitter controversies that fragmented the movement’s midcentury missions, to the city’s fiery end in the Roman destruction of Jerusalem, she brings this vibrant apostolic community to life. Fredriksen offers a vivid portrait both of this temple-centered messianic movement and of the bedrock convictions that animated and sustained it.

It's a bittersweet story about epic hope, beauty amidst horror, and the triumph of the human spirit.
