Book Jesuit Education at the Crossroads

Download or read book Jesuit Education at the Crossroads written by Juan Cristóbal Garcia-Huidobro and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jesuit educational tradition has existed for more than 450 years, and today, there are more than 150 Jesuit primary and secondary schools in North and Latin America. Jesuit Education at the Crossroads tackles the lack of research on these schools by bringing together scattered studies and asking experts on the issues about the current challenges for Jesuit education. The landscape pictured by this collection of essays suggests that Jesuit primary and secondary education is at a historical moment, analogous to a crossroads. After a crisis between the 1960s and ‘80s, these schools were consolidated, establishing themselves in national and international networks. But the twenty-first century has brought new challenges. For instance, the secularization of culture is demanding an update of the Jesuit educational project; leadership is rapidly shifting from Jesuits to lay men and women, with multiple issues at stake; and researchers and policymakers are asking new questions about the role of these schools and school networks for equity and inclusion in each region. The book touches on these and other points that will be very relevant for all who are interested in the Jesuit educational tradition.

Book Latin at the Crossroads of Identity

Download or read book Latin at the Crossroads of Identity written by Gábor Almási and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 18th century in the multi-ethnic Kingdom of Hungary, new language-based national identities came to dominate over those that had previously been constructed on legal, territorial, or historical basis. While the Hungarian language struggled to emancipate itself, the roles and functions of Latin (the official language until 1844) were changing dramatically. Latin held a different significance for varying segments of society, from being the essential part of an individual identity to representing an obstacle to “national survival”; from guaranteeing harmony between the different linguistic communities to hindering change, social and political justice. This pioneering volume aims to highlight the ways language debates about Latin and Hungarian contributed to the creation of new identities and ideologies in Central Europe. Contributors include Gábor Almási, Per Pippin Aspaas, Piroska Balogh, Henrik Hönich, László Kontler, István Margócsy, Alexander Maxwell, Ambrus Miskolczy, Levente Nagy, Nenad Ristović, Andrea Seidler, Teodora Shek Brnardić, Zvjezdana Sikirić Assouline, and Lav Šubarić

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesuit Education: Its History and Principles Viewed in the Light of Modern Educational Problems Mr. Quick, the English educationist, asserts that "since the Revival of Learning, no body of men has played so important a part in education as the Jesuits." And yet, as the same author says, "about these Jesuit schools there does not seem to be much information accessible to the English reader." (Educational Reformers, pp. 33 - 34.)It is true, indeed, that during the past few years much has been said and written about the Jesuit schools; in fact, they have occupied the attention of the public more, perhaps, than ever before. However, with the exception of the excellent book of Father Thomas Hughes, S. J. (Loyola and the Educational System of the Jesuits, 1892), most of what has been offered to American and English readers is entirely untrustworthy. The account given of the Jesuit system in Histories of Education used in this country, as those of Compayre, Painter, and Seeley, is a mere caricature. Instead of drawing from the original sources, these authors have been content to repeat the biased assertions of unreliable secondary authorities. Some observations on American Histories of Education will be found at the end of this book (p. 649 sqq.). The publication of a new work on the educational system of the Jesuits may be justified at the present day. Book The Jesuit Tradition in Education and Missions

Download or read book The Jesuit Tradition in Education and Missions written by Christopher Chapple and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first section of this volume deals with the formation of the Jesuit philosophy of education and with Jesuit education in Europe and America from its inception to the present. Included are discussions of how the Jesuit traditions of spirituality, education, and formation interface with the status of women, the challenge of modernity, and the renewed quest for authentic spirituality. The second section explores the Jesuit missions, history, and cultural insights, focusing primarily on interactions with native peoples of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Rather than emphasizing Jesuits as teachers, this section highlights notable cases not previously studied where Jesuits have functioned primarily as learners and pioneers in South America, the American Southwest and Northwest, Africa, and India.
