Book Jersey Folklore Superstitions Volume Two

Download or read book Jersey Folklore Superstitions Volume Two written by G. J. C. Bois and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in two volumes, the purpose of Jersey Folklore & Superstitions is three-fold: To bring all the previously published and any non-published material on Jersey folktales and superstitions together in one publication, to expand on the detail of this material and to place it in context by comparing it with similar or more complete traditions from the Gulf of St. Malo as a whole (Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany) and to consider its functions and origins. To this end they are further compared with traditions from Europe generally, with some examples from further afield and with mythologies worldwide. For Jersey readers this work will give an overview of their oral tradition, its significance and how it relates to the body of such traditions within Europe as a whole. For general readers the use of the Islands traditions as a template for those elsewhere, the process of comparison with those from other regions and the attempt to outline the broad range of sources from which they are drawn, may give an insight into particular areas of folk tradition generally, such as fairy-lore, indigenous sorcery (witchcraft), domestic superstition and the roles and origins of spectral animals and other beings. For this purpose, most chapters are broadly divided into four main sections. The Jersey material is presented first, followed by that from Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany, followed by an analysis using examples from further afield and from mythology. Each chapter concludes with a review and summary of this material. Liberal quotations of related ditons or sayings in Jrriais (the Jersey Language) are included with each chapter. The author has four previous publications; Jersey Superstitions in Etching & Poetry (hardcover 1981), An Introduction to Channel Islands Pewter (softcover 1993), Jersey Maritime Folklore (M/S format, 1996) and Sunbonnets in the Channel Islands & worldwide (CD-R 2005).

Book Jersey Superstitions in Etching and Poetry 2nd Edition

Download or read book Jersey Superstitions in Etching and Poetry 2nd Edition written by G. Bois and published by . This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A singular creative exploration in images and words of traditions from the folklore of the island of Jersey, with a section describing these traditions. This book is also available in an extended edition, with project development notes, sketches and additional etchings. This edition lacks that additional material and is for those who would prefer not to be distracted from the poetry and their accompanying etchings and stories. The Island of Jersey lies 15 miles from France, in an angle between the Norman and Breton coasts called the 'Gulf of St. Malo'. It is an autonomous 'peculiar' of the British Crown and with the other Channel Islands, is the only surviving residue of the old Norman state that conquered England in 1066. It is the 'original' Jersey that gave its name to its various namesakes around the world (including those in the United States). The native language was Jèrriais, an ancient Norman dialect of the langue d'oil, but English is almost exclusively spoken now and has been the majority language since the 1920s and in the countryside since the early 1950s. The deep oral traditions of the Island developed over at least 1000 years in a deeply superstitious rural and seafaring community (with limited mercantile and industrial elements) and started to die out in the late 19th century, although a few folk tales are still known today in a handful of neighbourhoods. These etchings and poems explore the deeper psychological elements of these almost extinct traditions and the impact they might have had on earlier minds and on the implications for the undercurrents that pass through modern minds.

Book The Secret History of the Jersey Devil

Download or read book The Secret History of the Jersey Devil written by Brian Regal and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative look at the mystery surrounding the Jersey Devil, a beast born of colonial times that haunts the corners of the Pine Barrens—and the American imagination—to this day. Legend has it that in 1735, a witch named Mother Leeds gave birth to a horrifying monster—a deformed flying horse with glowing red eyes—that flew up the chimney of her New Jersey home and disappeared into the Pine Barrens. Ever since, this nightmarish beast has haunted those woods, presaging catastrophe and frightening innocent passersby—or so the story goes. In The Secret History of the Jersey Devil, Brian Regal and Frank J. Esposito examine the genesis of this popular myth, which is one of the oldest monster legends in the United States. According to Regal and Esposito, everything you think you know about the Jersey Devil is wrong. The real story of the Jersey Devil's birth is far more interesting, complex, and important than most people—believers and skeptics alike—realize. Leaving the Pine Barrens, Regal and Esposito turn instead to the varied political and cultural roots of the Devil's creation. Fascinating and lively, this book finds the origins of New Jersey's favorite monster not in witchcraft or an unnatural liaison between woman and devil but in the bare-knuckled political fights and religious upheavals of colonial America. A product of innuendo and rumor, as well as scandal and media hype, the Jersey Devil enjoys a rich history involving land grabs, astrological predictions, mermaids and dinosaur bones, sideshows, Napoleon Bonaparte's brother, a cross-dressing royal governor, and Founding Father Benjamin Franklin.
