Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jersey City of to-Day: Its History, People, Trades, Commerce, Institutions and Industries There were people in Jersey City in 1870. To-day there is, therefore, an increase of about 200 per cent. At this rate of growth Jersey City will be a city of in 1936, but there are none who will not admit that she will have reached the million mark by that time. There are factors of progress to-day that never existed before, and these factors will so materially increase the ratio of increase that the most Optimistic prophet of to-day will be unable to tell what will be the population of Jersey City in 1936. The figures as given above are most conservative, and are based upon the percentage of increase during the past twenty-nine years. They do not take into account the subways, river tunnels and other factors of progress, whose influence is now beginning to be felt. Those agencies, it is believed, will increase the rate of growth so that Jersey City will in all probability have a population of long before 1936. Jersey City is the county seat of Hudson County, the smallest county in point of area yet the most densely populated in the state, the population of the county numbering and comprising thirteen municipalities, divided into two sections of ten and three municipalities each, separated by the Hackensack meadows. The smaller of these two groups comprises what is known as West Hudson and, because of its distance from the county 'seat, forms a locality of its own. The larger group is one great city, the border line separating the various municipalities being the centre of a street, so that the average outsider would not be aware of the fact that he had passed from one municipality to another. This group of municipalities comprises a population of and it is only a question of a few years when it will become a greater Jersey City. Efforts in the direction of consolidation have been under way for some time, but thus far the actual result has not been accomplished, though both commercial and topographic conditions all tend towards the eventful merger ofjersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken, West Hoboken, Union Hill, Weehawken, North Bergen and the smaller towns of Guttenberg, West New York and Secaucus as one great municipality. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Historical Exhibition Held by the Free Public Library of Jersey City: Held by the Free Public Library of Jersey City At the time of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, the Free Public Library of Jersey City contributed to its observance in various ways. First. There was held in the Auditorium of the Library a public meeting with historic addresses and patriotic music. Second. An historical pamphlet was published for free distribution entitled From Sail to Steam, giving the connection of New Jersey and its citizens with the development of steam navigation. Third. A list of books appropriate to the occasion was compiled and printed. Fourth. A loan exhibition of articles valuable for their age, rarity, historical associations, and intrinsic value, was held in the Museum belonging to the Library. This collection, which consisted to a great extent of heirlooms belonging to Jersey City families, proved to be of so much interest that it was decided that a permanent record of the exhibits should be made and the Librarian has accordingly catalogued them. The work has been a pleasure and it is hoped will give satisfaction to the friends who so kindly loaned these most interesting relics, and to whom cordial thanks are due. In addition to the articles listed in this catalogue the Library has long been the owner of a large number of manuscripts, maps and other articles of historic value, which together with a fine collection of natural curiosities will be catalogued as soon as opportunity will allow. Book History of the County of Hudson New Jersey

Download or read book History of the County of Hudson New Jersey written by Charles H. Winfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the County of Hudson, New Jersey: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time In the summer of 1869, white the author was investigating the title to the land now owned by the National Storage Company, near Communipaw, he had occasion to examine some old records. These awakened an interest in the past of this vicinity, which has increased with the subsequent years of research and toil. The following pages are the result. Whatever may be its imperfections, the candid reader may safely credit the author with considerable "work and labor done and performed," as the lawyers say, and an honest endeavor truthfully and impartially to reproduce the past and perpetuate the present, for the pleasure or profit of the future. Not a statement has been made without authority for its justification; not a fact which could throw light upon or add interest to whatever has happened within the County has been omitted, so far as the same came to his knowledge. The records at Albany, Trenton, Hackensack, Amboy and New York, besides many books, papers and private manuscripts, have been consulted. These have been depended on in preference to memories approaching the "forgetfulness of all things." The County was no inconsiderable part of New Netherland, and its history is contemporary and its government one with New Amsterdam. This suggested the starting point for investigation. It has been carried from that point until the present time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of the Centennial Celebration of the Battle of Paulus Hook, August 19, 1879: With a History of the Early Settlement and Present Condition of Jersey City, N. J The Committee desire to express their obligations to Hon. Charles H. Winfield for a number of the plates used in this work, and also to the many business firms for their uniform courtesy and kindness in giving information and illustrations of their manufactories. The map of Paulus Hook in 1779, portraits of Major Henry Lee, Lord Stirling, lion. Dudley S. Gregory and Hon. Henry J. Hopper were made expressly for this publication; the illustrations of the procession and the meeting in the Tabernacle were used (after having been reduced in size) by permission of the publishers of The Graphic, in which paper they appeared on August 20th, 1879. The statistics given are from official sources. It was the wish of many citizens that the part relating to Jersey City should be made more comprehensive, but the committee felt that it was not their province to enlarge upon what must be the labor of some future historian. The manufactories have been selected solely with a view to exhibit the rapid growth of the city, and while many more establishments could with propriety have been added, it was not thought to be necessary or desirable, sufficient being given to illustrate the vast interests which centre here, and which have contributed in a few years - within the memory of many of its inhabitants - to transform the sand-hills and marshes of Paulns Hook into a large commercial and manufacturing emporium, which must soon become the Metropolis of the State. By 1664 they had small settlements at Paulus Hook and Bergen (both within the present limits of Jersey City), and also at Hoboken, Pavonia, and Weehawken. A few settlers had built themselves homes on Newark Bay, but the actual settlement had progressed so slowly that when the Dutch were forced to give up New Netherlands, few traces of their occupation remained.
