Book Jeremy Block Flight Risk

Download or read book Jeremy Block Flight Risk written by John Reddie and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 1982 in Barnsfield, Massachusetts, attractive Patricia Kent turned thirty years old and was a successful realtor. She had taken over her fathers business after he suffered a debilitating stroke, which he was slowly recovering from. She was still grieving the loss of her husband, who had died suddenly four years earlier and after only four months of marriage. Through a girlfriend of hers who owned a small airplane, she met Jeremy Block, who worked as a small aircraft mechanic at a local airport. Jeremy was tall, handsome, and appeared to be a perfect gentleman. Before very long, he and Patricia began seriously dating and soon became engaged. Jeremys apparent kindness and feelings for her were comforting after the recent years of sadness she had experienced. Before long, Jeremy learned of Patricias excellent financial standing achieved from lucrative property sales commissions and wise stock market investments. When Patricia was sidetracked by a family tragedy, he absconded with twenty thousand dollars of her money and an almost priceless coin collection that belonged to her father. Devastated when learning of this, she hired a private detective to attempt to locate Jeremy and her fathers stolen coins and bring him to justice. Before long, facts surfaced that painted an entirely different picture of Jeremy Block. Instead of the well-mannered, caring young man he portrayed, he was actually a con man and a thief and was possibly responsible for several murders. With twists and turns, Patricia took on a mission to apprehend Jeremy with the help of the private detective.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY: The New York Times * NPR * Vogue * Gay Times * Artforum * “Gay Bar is an absolute tour de force.” –Maggie Nelson "Atherton Lin has a five-octave, Mariah Carey-esque range for discussing gay sex.” –New York Times Book Review As gay bars continue to close at an alarming rate, a writer looks back to find out what’s being lost in this indispensable, intimate, and stylish celebration of queer history. Strobing lights and dark rooms; throbbing house and drag queens on counters; first kisses, last call: the gay bar has long been a place of solidarity and sexual expression—whatever your scene, whoever you’re seeking. But in urban centers around the world, they are closing, a cultural demolition that has Jeremy Atherton Lin wondering: What was the gay bar? How have they shaped him? And could this spell the end of gay identity as we know it? In Gay Bar, the author embarks upon a transatlantic tour of the hangouts that marked his life, with each club, pub, and dive revealing itself to be a palimpsest of queer history. In prose as exuberant as a hit of poppers and dazzling as a disco ball, he time-travels from Hollywood nights in the 1970s to a warren of cruising tunnels built beneath London in the 1770s; from chichi bars in the aftermath of AIDS to today’s fluid queer spaces; through glory holes, into Crisco-slicked dungeons and down San Francisco alleys. He charts police raids and riots, posing and passing out—and a chance encounter one restless night that would change his life forever. The journey that emerges is a stylish and nuanced inquiry into the connection between place and identity—a tale of liberation, but one that invites us to go beyond the simplified Stonewall mythology and enter lesser-known battlefields in the struggle to carve out a territory. Elegiac, randy, and sparkling with wry wit, Gay Bar is at once a serious critical inquiry, a love story and an epic night out to remember.

Book excerpt: An evocative coming-of-age tale set in 1960s America When Jeremy Hill returns to his hometown of Pacific Grove, California, in the summer of 1967, the small town is gripped with curiosity. Having disappeared for eleven years following the tragic night he was found standing over his abusive father’s dead body, knife in hand, Jeremy sparks a rush of memories, longings, and regrets for Celia, his childhood best friend, and three of their early classmates. What follows is a summer of reconnections and self-discovery amid the cultural revolution of a changing America. Plagued with apprehension about his upcoming service in Vietnam and filled with the resentments of the past, Jeremy pushes a smitten Celia away despite her many efforts to mend their broken bond. Fletcher battles with his own sexuality as he sees gay men assaulted and reviled. He must decide whether to face condemnation or go deeper into hiding. No matter which he chooses, though, he risks losing everyone he loves. Angie struggles to embrace the new wave of feminism while trying to support her family in the wake of her father’s betrayal. She delights in the sudden abundance of choices for young women, all of which tempt her to abandon her responsibilities. Moose dives headlong into the cultural revolution with sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, inspired to question all forms of traditional thought. From music festivals and psychedelic acid trips to San Francisco’s burgeoning queer movement, Flight of the Monarchs, the first book in a trilogy, will transport you into the dreamlike haze of the famed Summer of Love.

Book Chess Problems

  • Author : Jeremy Morse
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd

Download or read book Chess Problems written by Jeremy Morse and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is chess an art, a science or a sport? This is one of the most commonly asked questions about chess, but it admits of no easy answer. Most chess activities involve a combination of all three components, but different areas of chess emphasize different aspects. The sporting element predominates in the over-theboard game, while the protracted battles of postal chess stress the scientific side. The third element, the artistic component, finds its best expression in the field of chess composition. Over the- board players often ignore composed positions, or if they do pay attention, they concentrate on endgame compositions of direct relevance to practical play. In turning their backs on the world of chess problems, they are missing out on a great deal of enjoyment. It is true that studying chess problems will never improve anybody's play, but not everything has to have a strictly functional justification. The many fascinating examples which follow can give a great deal of pleasure to anyone interested in seeing the chess pieces stretched to their limits. This book will conduct the reader on a detailed tour around one part of the world of chess composition.

Book Technology in Financial Markets

Download or read book Technology in Financial Markets written by Marco Dell'Erba and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, technology has emerged as a disruptive force in the economy and finance, leading to the establishment of new economic and financial paradigms. Focusing on blockchain technology and its implementations in finance, Technology in Financial Markets proposes a novel theoretical approach to disruption. Relying on complexity science, it develops a dynamic perspective on the study of disruptive phenomena and their relationship to financial regulation and the law. It identifies the intrinsic interconnections characterizing the "multidimensional" technology-driven transformations, involving commercial practices, capital markets, corporate-governance, central banking, and financial networks. From this perspective, it considers the way they are reflected at the level of contract law, financial law, corporate law, central banking law. The book adopts a unique comparative approach and explains and clarifies the factual and historical dimensions underlying the emergence of the crypto-economy. In this book blockchain is used as a case study. Blockchain exemplifies the way each subpart of the financial system - commercial practices, financial markets, corporations, central banking, networks - and consequently each subcategory of financial regulation evolves on an individual basis. It shows how such subparts evolve altogether bringing systemic transformations, and ultimately leading to the creation of new economic and financial paradigms. The book considers both these perspectives, analysing the evolution of each subpart and emphasizing the interconnected transformations. In doing this, it adopts the structure of an ascending climax, starting from contracts, and escalating to increasingly broad dimensions, in particular capital markets, corporate governance, central banking, and financial networks.
