Book Post Apocalyptic Patriarchy

Download or read book Post Apocalyptic Patriarchy written by Carlen Lavigne and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-first century American television series such as Revolution, Falling Skies, The Last Ship and The Walking Dead have depicted a variety of doomsday scenarios--nuclear cataclysm, rogue artificial intelligence, pandemic, alien invasion or zombie uprising. These scenarios speak to longstanding societal anxieties and contemporary calamities like 9/11 or the avian flu epidemic. Questions about post-apocalyptic television abound: whose voices are represented? What tomorrows are they most afraid of? What does this tell us about the world we live in today? The author analyzes these speculative futures in terms of gender, race and sexuality, revealing the fears and ambitions of a patriarchy in flux, as exemplified by the "return" to a mythical American frontier where the white male hero fights for survival, protects his family and crafts a new world order based on the old.

The main character, Jeremiah Wilson thought otherwise though. After a brief gunfight which left all the outlaws dead and the leader wounded, the group of travellers decided to let him go since he was unarmed, but they didn't think about the rifle that was in the outlaw leaders saddle boot. As the leader left the area, he turned around about 200 yards away and fired his rifle in the general direction of the travelling group killing the woman in the back wagon, Mary Wilson. Book Jeremiah Lamentations

  • Publisher : InterVarsity Press
  • Release : 2018-05-29
  • ISBN : 083088730X
  • Pages : 681 pages

Download or read book Jeremiah Lamentations written by J. Jeffery Tyler and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophetic ministry of Jeremiah, described in the Old Testament books of Jeremiah and Lamentations, took place during a time of chaos and tragedy for the people of Israel: the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple, and the exile to Babylon. Yet, in the midst of this loss and in hope of the restoration of God's people, Jeremiah is able to declare: "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness" (Lam 3:22-23). Reflecting on these verses, Reformation commentators, who were themselves familiar with the turbulent realities of their own sixteenth century, heard not only hope for the renewal of Israel, but prophetic promise for the coming of the Messiah. Lutheran theologian and pastor Nikolaus Selnecker wrote, "Is not what Jeremiah says immeasurably beautiful, lovely, and consoling? You will think, what is my soul saying to me? That is a strong Amen, when the spirit of the heart knows and can say, 'God hears me, I know it. My heart tells me. I do not doubt God's grace. I am a child of God. He is my father and will help me.'" In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, church historian J. Jeffery Tyler guides readers through a diversity of early modern commentary on the books of Jeremiah and Lamentations. Readers will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a variety of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans, and Roman Catholics. Drawing upon a variety of resources—including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions—much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to help everyone remember that God's mercies never come to an end.

The Rockeaters is an epic account of Jeremiah McCurdy, 1620-1752, describing his search for and the discovery of the legendary Rockeaters. Jeremiah was a Scottish Highlander who immigrated to colonial America in 1633 and was immediately caught up in all the wonderful people and places he encountered as he explored the New World. His friendships with Native American, ex-enslaved Africans, and his Highlander neighbors made history. There are heroes, lifelong friendships, lasting loves, and colorful characters involved throughout his journey. There is adventure, humor, love, betrayal, and forgiveness. There are wars with battles on land and at sea and exploration of high mountains and deep caves, and finally there are the Rockeaters themselves, a benevolent race of ancient people who had managed to survive from antiquity. Jeremiah is unwittingly chosen for a great quest that involves wonderful gifts, long life, and grave dangers. It is an adventure almost too fantastic to believe and if not for his journals would have been lost and forgotten long ago.

Book The Chronicle of Jeremiah Goldswain

Download or read book The Chronicle of Jeremiah Goldswain written by Ralph Goldswain and published by 30 Degrees South Publishers. This book was released on 2014-07-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the 1820 Settler, Jeremiah Goldswain, in his own words. After thirty-eight years on the eastern boundary of the Cape Colony, he sat down to write his memoirs. It is a close-up view of four decades during a period when the British Empire was expanding in southern Africa, with the borders being pushed ever farther into the hinterland by successive governors. As a result, there was constant conflict between the African tribes and the colonists. Jeremiah was directly involved in three of the nine Frontier Wars that occurred between 1779 and 1879. It is the story of hardship and the struggle for survival of Jeremiah and his familyÑhis wife Eliza and their ten childrenÑon one of the most volatile borders the world has ever seen. Even in peacetime the conflict and violent clash of cultures were constantly present and many settlers were murdered, including members of JeremiahÕs family. Through all this we see a man making his way in a world he could not have imagined while growing up in rural Buckinghamshire. He lived during an important historical time for South Africa, not only observing and fighting the wars, but meeting and serving with some of the most famous names in South African history. He saw, in detail, the effects of the Cattle Killing of 1856, the Boer uprising in the Orange River Sovereignty, as well as several other famous and notorious historical events. The text has been published once onlyÑ by the van Riebeeck Society in 1949Ñand since then has been used by scholars and historians as a primary source. It has not been widely read, because Jeremiah had no education, and although he had an extraordinary ability to describe experience and express his emotions, he was a stranger to the conventions of written language. Now Ralph Goldswain has transcribed the original text into an accessible account of forty years of frontier history.
