Jenva had a very large family and a lot of them lived in the same small, gray house that she lived in. Nothing about Jenva's life was simple-from the things she had heard about her mother's life when Jenva was a child, to the biological father who had deserted her and her mother-a father she didn't see until the age of eight. As a teenager, after meeting the love of her life, Alex, Jenva realized she was walking down the same paths her own mother had taken. As determined as Jenva was, would she be able to overcome the struggle and temptations that her mother never could?

Book Everything is on the Move

Download or read book Everything is on the Move written by Stephan Conermann and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2014 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, we try to understand the "Mamluk Empire" not as a confined space but as a region where several nodes of different networks existed side-by-side and at the same time. In our opinion, these networks constitute to a great extent the core of the so-called Mamluk society; they form the basis of the social order. Following, in part, concepts refined in the New Area Studies, recent reflections about the phenomenon of the "Empire - State", trajectories in today's Global History, and the spatial turn in modern historiography, we intend to identify a number of physical and cognitive networks with one or more nodes in Mamluk-controlled territories. In addition to this, one of the most important analytical questions would be to define the role of these networks in Mamluk society.

Book A is for Asylum Seeker Words for People on the Move A de asilo palabras para personas en movimiento

Download or read book A is for Asylum Seeker Words for People on the Move A de asilo palabras para personas en movimiento written by Rachel Ida Buff and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and concise A-to-Z of keywords that echo our current human rights crisis As millions are forced to leave their nations of origin as a result of political, economic, and environmental peril, rising racism and xenophobia have led to increasingly harsh policies. A mass-mediated political circus obscures both histories of migration and longstanding definitions of words for people on the move, fomenting widespread linguistic confusion. Under this circus tent, there is no regard for history, legal advocacy, or jurisprudence. Yet in a world where the differences between “undocumented migrant” and “asylum seeker” can mean life or death, words have weighty consequences. A timely antidote to this circus, A is for Asylum Seeker reframes key words that describe people on the move. Written to correct the de-meaning of terms by rhetoric and policies based on dehumanization and profitable incarceration, this glossary provides an intersectional and historically grounded consideration of the words deployed in enflamed debate. Skipping some letters of the alphabet while repeating others, thirty terms cover everything from Asylum-seeker to Zero Tolerance Policy. Each entry begins with a contemporary or historical story for illustration and then proceeds to discuss the language politics of the word. The book balances terms affected by current political debates—such as “migrant,” “refugee,” and “illegal alien”—and terms that offer historical context to these controversies, such as “fugitive,” “unhoused,” and “vagrant.” Rendered in both English and Spanish, this book offers a unique perspective on the journeys, histories, challenges, and aspirations of people on the move. Enhancing the book’s utility as an educational and organizing resource, the author provides a list of works for further reading as well as a directory of immigration-advocacy organizations throughout the United States.

Book A Week on the Lake

Download or read book A Week on the Lake written by Roger Hall Lloyd and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author was born in Oklahoma in 1934 and moved to England with his parents and sister in 1939. At the outbreak of War he returned to Oklahoma with his mother and sister, though his father remained in England. At the end of the War the family was reunited in England. During the following years the family spent many summers by the Lake of Geneva, Switzerland. It was partly these memories which brought the author to revisit the Lake, and partly his interest in the great figures of the Romantic movement associated with the Lake. In particular, he retraced the voyage which the poets Byron and Shelley took around the Lake in the summer of 1816. Apart from Byron and Shelley this brought the author to reflect on the lives, thought and careers of other persons associated with the Lake, including Mary Shelley, Edward Gibbon, J-J Rousseau, William Beckford, Benjamin Constant and Mme de Stael, reminders of whom he encountered in the course of his week on the Lake.

Book Forests and Globalization

Download or read book Forests and Globalization written by William Nikolakis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching contribution of this book is a review and assessment of the current and future impacts of globalization on the world’s forests. The work has been developed by the "Resources for the Future" Task Force for the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). Four key themes are addressed: the effect of globalization on forests (including future trade flows); plantations as the primary source of forest products and its consequences, including plant breeding and forest health; the effect of new products such as bio-products and markets on forests; and the emergence of forest ecosystem services and their impact on the landscape and human communities. These four themes are examined in detail to map out the impacts of these trends for forests throughout the world and at multiple scales, and how forest research needs to be adapted to address these trends. Overall, the volume provides a major synthesis of current thinking and knowledge on the topic for advanced students, as well as policy-makers and professionals in the forest sector.
