Book Jefferson County Wisconsin

Download or read book Jefferson County Wisconsin written by W. F. Jannke and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jefferson County holds a unique place in the history of the state of Wisconsin. Founded in 1836 by Yankee settlers from New England, it began as an agriculturally-based county but soon rose to prominence as the cradle of the dairy industry. Nestled in the valley of the Rock River in southeastern Wisconsin, Jefferson County has always figured prominently in the history of the state due to its proximity to both Milwaukee, Wisconsin's largest city, and Madison, the state capital. Jefferson County, Wisconsin looks at the history of this area from 1836 to the present day. The historic images and informative text allow the reader to view changes in industry, gain greater insight into the history of education, and better understand the historic roles that religion and the ever-important rivers have played in defining Jefferson County. By the beginning of the twentieth century, and for many years after, Jefferson County was the leader in the dairy industry. Education also played an important role in the makeup of the county's character. Such important educational milestones as the first kindergarten in America, founded in Watertown in 1856, and the first free textbooks in the state bear witness to the county's commitment to the educational betterment of its children. Since the 1960s, much has changed in Jefferson County, and this book will serve as a permanent record of its wonderful history, which is sometimes too easily forgotten.

Book excerpt: During the height of industrialization, Jefferson County, New York, came into its own as a prosperous and bustling center of trade and manufacturing. Join author Elise Davis Chan of the Jefferson County Historical Society in celebrating the growth of this great region, from the county 's early settlement c. 1800 to the area 's post-World War II prosperity in the 1950s. With a simple turn of the page, readers travel back in time to the small towns that hug the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, and we visit the city of Watertown and the inland towns dotting the Jefferson County landscape. In the early 1900s, the grand hotels along the St. Lawrence were popular destinations for out-of-town guests during the summer months. Images of the area 's hotels, churches, train stations, schoolhouses, homes, and workplaces all give us a distinct picture of what life was like for the people living in this region in the 1800s and early 1900s. Private homes are also featured, like the grand abode of former New York Governor Roswell P Flower, and the island castle of George Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Book Stone Houses of Jefferson County

Download or read book Stone Houses of Jefferson County written by Maureen Hubbard Barros and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jefferson County, New York, has one of the richest concentrations of stone houses in America. As many as 500 stone houses, churches, and commercial buildings were built there before 1860. Some of the buildings are beautiful mansions built by early entrepreneurs; others are small vernacular farmhouses. Some are clustered together; others dot the countryside near stone outcroppings. Embedded in the fabric of each building are the stories of its location, its maker, and its inhabitants over time. Lavishly illustrated with almost 300 photographs, this volume highlights eighty-five stone houses in the region. The editors explore both the beauty and permanence of the stonework and the courage and ambition of the early dwellers. They detail the ways in which skilled masons utilized local limestone and sandstone, crafting double-faced stone walls to protect against fire and harsh winters. The book includes discussions of the geology of the region, the stone buildings that have been lost, and the preservation and care of existing structures. Stone Houses of Jefferson County provides a fascinating look at the intrinsic beauty of these buildings and the historical links they provide to our early settlement.

Book Port Townsend

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jefferson County Historical Society
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780738556222
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Port Townsend written by Jefferson County Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Washington's Olympic Peninsula, at the entrance to Puget Sound, the Port Townsend of the 1850s was perfectly situated for sailing vessels. By 1880, thousands of ships from all over the world were passing through. Optimistic investors sought fortunes in shipping, logging, lumber mills, and land speculation. While commerce flourished at sea level, citizens built fine homes, churches, schools, clubs, a respectable shopping district, and parks uptown on the bluff. The settlers of this lovely seaport enjoyed rich cultural and social lives. Port Townsend went bust after the anticipated railroad failed to arrive. It remained largely frozen in time without economic motivation to tear down and replace its fine Victorian architecture. It wasn't until the 1970s that the beautiful setting and buildings were discovered by artists, hippies, preservationists, and, later, tourists and retirees. The town is now a thriving arts and cultural community, still beautiful, still small and remote.
