Book excerpt: The definitive, fully illustrated celebration of an auto manufacturer that paved its own way by going off-road is now updated to celebrate Jeep’s 80th anniversary. Few American vehicles, or vehicles made anywhere else in the world for that matter, are as universally iconic as the Jeep. From olive drab WWII military relics to the beloved Wrangler with its rear-mounted spare tire, open-air design, and telltale roll cage, the Jeep is a true classic. In Jeep: Eight Decades from Willys to Wrangler, automotive writer Patrick R. Foster chronicles Jeep vehicle design and production from the beginning of World War II to present. Beginning with the Jeep as a crucial component of the American war fleet, Foster expertly recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls, and, above all, the enduring machines that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. More than 200 color and black-and-white historical photos and period advertisements complement his expertly written narrative of Jeep's entire history, now updated to include five years of new model editions and prototypes, its return to the pickup market, and recent stunning marketplace successes. The resulting book reminds us that sometimes the road less traveled was just waiting for the right truck.

Book excerpt: “The Jeep is as iconic a military vehicle as the Chieftain tank, and this terrific book celebrates it in brilliant style . . . inspiring.” —Books Monthly The Second World War Jeep was one of the most famous and influential military vehicles of all time, and over 600,000 were produced. It served with all the Allied forces during the war on every front and it has been the inspiration behind the design of light, versatile, rugged military and civilian vehicles ever since. In this, the first volume in Pen & Sword’s LandCraft series, Lance Cole traces the design, development and manufacturing history of the Jeep and describes its operational role within the Allied armies. A selection of archive photographs showing the Jeep in service in European and Pacific campaigns gives a graphic impression of how adaptable the Jeep was and records the variety of equipment it could carry. The book is an excellent source for the modeler, providing details of available kits, together with specially commissioned color profiles recording how the Jeeps used by different units and armies appeared. Lance Cole’s introduction to the Jeep is necessary reading and reference for enthusiasts and modelers. “If you are a modeler looking for guidance and inspiration then this book is a must have. Its pages are packed full of jeep goodness, giving tips and ideas for your build. It is also a great read, or coffee-time browser, if you are a vehicle enthusiast or simply love Willys/Ford jeeps and merely want to stimulate your brain and satisfy your eyes.” —The OCAD Collection

Excerpt: The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a Mid-size SUV produced by the Jeep division of Chrysler. While some other SUV's were manufactured with body on frame construction, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always used a unibody chassis. The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors (AMC) engineers were designing a successor to the smaller Jeep Cherokee (XJ). Three outside (non-AMC) designers-Larry Shinoda, Adam Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro-were under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design. The Grand Cherokee was the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new model continued and Chrysler employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the January 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman...

Book Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT

Download or read book Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT written by Don Alexander and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn your modification options for the most modern and exciting Jeeps! Going back to World War II, Jeeps have had a special place in America’s heart. The utility vehicle that helped win the war transitioned into the civilian Jeep, or CJ, and the Jeep brand has had several owners over the years. While still remaining wildly popular, it has evolved. The Wrangler version of the Jeep was transformed with the release of the JK for the 2007 model year. With a more practical 4-door version, this Wrangler became a popular vehicle for year-round use, which appealed to off-roaders as well as soccer moms. For the 2017 model year, Jeep seriously upgraded the Wrangler, which is now dubbed the JL, and added an exciting new model, the Gladiator, or JT, which is essentially a pickup version of the Wrangler. In Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT: Performance Modifications, Jeep experts Don Alexander and Quinn Thomas introduce you to these new models and walk you through the capabilities and options for all of the trim levels. Then, they examine how to make these things better, system by system. Suspension, steering, and brakes are covered, as they are the heart of any off-road rig. Also examined are modification options for axles, driveshafts, and differentials as well as bumpers, armor, and protection. Of course, off-roaders need a quality winch, recovery gear, and upgraded electrics, so options are explored here as well. Wheels and tires are also very important for those leaving paved roads, and upgrade options for all of the trim levels and lift levels are covered thoroughly. Whether you want to build a JL or JT to be a serious rock crawler or simply look like you are going off-road, all of your options are thoroughly explained in this book. Add a copy to your Jeep reference library.
