From the sixties to the eighties, his films were as much celebrated at international film festivals as are the films of Atom Egoyan today. More recently, Lefebvre has explored the creative potential of video as a visual medium. In Jean Pierre Lefebvre: Vidéaste, Peter Harcourt provides an overview of Lefebvre’s films and an incisive consideration of his five-part video project L’age des Images (1993-95). Two essays by Lefebvre, one a personal account of the influence of Québécois films on his work, the other an argument for a “national cinema”, along with a recent interview with him round out this timely look at a director of great distinction and emotive power. Published by the Toronto International Film Festival. Distributed in Canada by Wilfrid Laurier University Press. Distributed outside Canada by Indiana University Press.

With over 24,500 entries, of which 10,500 are annotated, it opens up the literature devoted to Canadian film and video, at last making it readily accessible to scholars and researchers. Drawing on both English and French sources, it identifies books, catalogues, government reports, theses, and periodical and newspaper articles from Canadian and non-Canadian publications from the first decade of the twentieth century to 1989. The work is bilingual; descriptive annotations are presented in the language(s) of the original publication. Canadian Film and Video / Film et vidéo canadiens provides an in-depth guide to the work of over 4000 individuals working in film and video and 5000 films and videos. The entries in Volume I cover topics such as film types, the role of government, laws and legislation, censorship, festivals and awards, production and distribution companies, education, cinema buildings, women and film, and video art. A major section covers filmmakers, video artists, cinematographers, actors, producers, and various other film people. Volume II presents an author index, a film and video title index, and a name and subject index. In the tradition of the highly acclaimed publication Art and Architecture in Canada these volumes fill a long-standing need for a comprehensive reference tool for Canadian film and video. Book excerpt: This is the first complete bibliography of the writings of Yvan Goll (1891-1950), the French-German poet, novelist, dramatist, journalist and translator. The first part gives full details of Goll's publications during his lifetime, and includes books and pamphlets, contributions to periodicals, newspapers and anthologies, books and journals edited by Goll, translations by Goll, and his published letters. The second part makes it possible to trace the dissemination of Goll's work, with posthumous first publications, posthumous reprints in periodicals and anthologies, translations of Goll's works by others (into twenty languages) and musical collaborations and settings. A comprehensive index of titles or first lines allows the user to trace single works through the various sections; there are also indexes of writers translated by Goll and letters by recipient. This bibliography documents the huge scope of the writings of an author who wrote in three major languages and published in many countries. It contains a wide range of references to texts hitherto unknown, many of them items in journals and newspapers, and is by far the most reliable source to date of what Goll actually wrote.

Book Claude Jutra

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jim Leach
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 1999-09-01
  • ISBN : 0773567917
  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book Claude Jutra written by Jim Leach and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close readings of Jutra's major films, Jim Leach analyses their distinctive cinematic qualities and discusses the responses they have received from reviewers and critics. He focuses both on the films and the historical and cultural contexts in which they were made, arguing that critics have frequently used inappropriate criteria to judge them and that these misunderstandings reveal much about attitudes to Canadian cinema in general. Jutra's films are shown to reflect the instability of their cinematic and cultural contexts and raise important questions about nationhood. Jutra always identified himself as a separatist and his films were shaped by the rapid changes in Quebec society during the Quiet Revolution and by the political tensions of the sixties and seventies. At the same time his work was often appreciated by English Canadian critics and audiences and was affected by federal film policy and institutions. Although Jutra died in 1986, his films and career still have much to tell us about Canadian cinema and media production, and about the complex cultural contexts that underlie the ongoing debates on Canadian and Quebec nationhood.
