Download or read book Alfred Jarry an Imagination in Revolt written by Jill Fell and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The text of the book is supported by more than fifty illustrations. Some are Jarry's own and some are those of contemporaries, such as Aubrey Beardsley, Emile Bernard, Pierre Bonnard, Max Elskamp, Charles Filiger, Paul Gauguin, Gerhard Munthe, Henri Rousseau, and Felix Vallotton. Others relate to an iconic intertext, hitherto unexplored. Alfred Jarry: An Imagination in Revolt sheds light on an underresearched area of fin-de-siecle French culture and art history, establishing Jarry's role as a major figure in the origins of modernism."--Jacket.
Download or read book Pataphysica 2 written by Faustroll and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great tradition of Nicolas Flamel and Fulcanelli, the immortal Dr. Faustroll returns to introduce this collection of writings on alchemy, that "secret science" no less mystifying and marvelous than our own art and science, pataphysics. Opening this anthology is Part 1 of Alfred Jarry's delightful last novel, La Dragonne (1907), translated from the French as The She-Dragon, and annotated to highlight some of Jarry's many alchemical allusions. Jarry's comic genius brings to life the inhabitants of a little town in the mountains of Savoy, focusing on gaming activities at and around the local tavern, and an oddly militaristic expectant father. Seven additional writers present their research or reflections on subjects as diverse as Chaucer's Canon's Yeoman's Tale, the bizarre Voynich Manuscript, Gustave Kahn's Tale of Gold and Silence, turn-of-the-20th-century South African statesman Paul Krüger (whose portrait bust appears on the Krügerrand), and symbolic dismemberment; two of these contributors present their work in poetic form, one of them seemingly cursed by alchemy, however benevolently, the other positing seven "easy" steps to completion of the "Great Work." Perhaps you will find yourself entwined somewhere in between, like Mercury's caduceus. For all pataphysicians, alchemists, and symbolists: welcome to the other world.

Book excerpt: First published in 2003 Consuming the Past covers pilgrimages to popular festivals, from modern spectacles to advertising, from the work of avant-garde painters to the novels of Emile Zola, and explores the complexity of the fin-de-siècle French fascination with the Middle Ages. The authors map the cultural history of the period from the end of the Franco-Prussian war to the 1905 separation of Church and State illuminating the powerful appeal that the medieval past held for a society undergoing the rapid changes of industrialisation.

Download or read book The Juggler of Notre Dame and the Medievalizing of Modernity written by Jan M. Ziolkowski and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life. Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before its translation into English in Britain and the United States. The visual influence of the tale on Gothic revivalism and vice versa in America is carefully documented with lavish and inventive illustrations, and Ziolkowski concludes with an examination of the explosion of interest in The Juggler of Notre Dame in the twentieth century and its place in mass culture today. In this volume Jan Ziolkowski follows the juggler of Notre Dame as he cavorts through new media, including radio, television, and film, becoming closely associated with Christmas and embedded in children’s literature. Presented with great clarity and simplicity, Ziolkowski's work is accessible to the general reader, while its many new discoveries will be valuable to academics in such fields and disciplines as medieval studies, medievalism, philology, literary history, art history, folklore, performance studies, and reception studies.

Download or read book La Belgique entre deux si cles written by Nathalie Aubert and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Jarry en ymages written by Collège de 'pataphysique and published by Editions Gallimard. This book was released on 2011 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
