Book excerpt: Cities Connection Project (CCP) was born with the aim to establish a network of cultural connections between Barcelona and other European cities with an important architectural tradition. A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project that also offers other events such as conferences, meetings among universities, and the desire to create synergies among the professional teams involved. Barcelona has become a worldwide recognized brand, in wich architecture and urbanism have played a key role. One of the main elements of the “Barcelona Model” is the quality of public space, and this reason has impulsed Open Space Connection (OSC), a branch of CCP, but focused in the field of public spaces in metropolitan areas. Through the first edition of Open Space Connection, the curators aim to open the reflection about two differents methodologies of thinking public spaces and landscape architecture: one of them in the the French Swiss Region of Lake Leman and the other one in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

Download or read book La Cara be donn es environnementales written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2006 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countering the phenomenon of sprawl in the often anonymous or chaotic urban periphery, the Oassis neighborhood in Lausanne takes a unique approach based on urbanity and hybridization. Located on a former industrial wasteland in the west of the city, Oassis reflects the compositional principles of the traditional city, while also engaging in the dynamics of ecological transition and climate resilience. This ‘urban fragment’ is both an urban fabric, compatible with future developments in the neighborhood, and an architectural object characterized by urbanity. The contemporary challenges of regenerating suburban areas are addressed here through diverse development programs and a profusion of gardens. Skilful combination of economic, ecological and social factors with high-quality architecture With unpublished documents and specially commissioned photographs

Download or read book Terror and Toleration written by Paula Sutter Fichtner and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many negative stereotypes of Muslims can be traced to the clashes between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe in the Middle Ages. Paula Sutter Fichtner explores here the particular dynamics between the Ottoman and Austrian Habsburg empires and chronicles the evolution of a political relationship that shifted from hatred to understanding. In the fourteenth century, Ottoman armies swept westward across the Danube Valley before confronting the Habsburgs, who ruled central and eastern Europe, and in Terror and Toleration, Fichtner charts the religious and political conflicts that fueled 300 years of war. She reveals how ruling powers in Vienna and the church spread propaganda about Muslims that still lingers today. But the Habsburgs dramatically reversed their attitudes toward Muslims in the seventeenth century, and through this story, Fichtner explains how one can recognize an enemy while adjusting one’s views about them. A fascinating read, Terror and Toleration sheds new light on the deep roots of the often contentious relationship between Islam and the West.

Download or read book The European Landscape Convention written by Michael Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and insightful book provides, for the first time, a broad presentation of ongoing research into public participation in landscape conservation, management and planning, following the 2000 European Landscape Convention which came into force in 2004. The book examines both the theory of participation and what lessons can be learnt from specific European examples. It explores in what manner and to what extent the provisions for participation in the European Landscape Convention have been followed up and implemented. It also presents and compares different experiences of participation in selected countries from northern, southern, eastern and western Europe, and provides a critical examination of public participation in practice. However, while the book’s focus is necessarily on Europe, many of the conclusions drawn are of global relevance. The book provides a valuable reference for researchers and advanced students in landscape policies and management, as well as for professionals and others interested in land-use planning and environmental management.
