Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Treasure Tales Ever since I first came to England some six or seven years ago, I have had many enquiries for explanations of the incidents which occur so frequently in the art treasures of Japan, and also as to any English work in which the stories thus illustrated may be found. Such a book I have unfortunately not been able to name, the majority of English books on Japan being devoted to fairy tales, history or reviews of Japanese matters and general accounts of Japanese travels. I then formed the intention of endeavouring myself to produce such a book, and on consulting my colleague, Mr. Lee, he not only cordially approved of my design but Offered to assist me in every way possible towards its execution, and the present little volume is the result. In its preparation many unlooked for difficulties arose, such as, a scarcity of original Japanese authorities on some of the subjects; a difficulty in finding suitable treasures with which to illustrate some Of the stories; and others whichit is needless to specify. The tales, such as they are, are all constructed from the best available Japanese authorities, in most cases much of the original which is of the nature of mere padding is omitted; and, in conclusion, the little work is not intended for the serious study of historians or philosophers, but is merely a humble contribution towards a know ledge of Japanese art, such as may, it is hoped, appeal to admirers Of the same. Drawing on unpublished primary sources and contemporary Japanese literature hithero untranslated into English it highlights the open subjectivity and addective relationality of Isabella Bird, Mary Crawford Fraser, and Marie Stopes in their interactions with Japanese hosts. Victorian Women's Travel Writing on Meiji Japan demonstates how travel narratives and literary works about non-colonial Japan complicate and challenge Oriental stereotypes and imperial binaries. It traces the shifts in the representation of Japan in Victorian discourse from obsequious mousmé to virile samurai alongside transitions in the Anglo-Japanese bilateral relationship and global geopolitical events. Considering the ethical and political implications of how Victorian women wrote about their Japanese friends, it examines how female travellers created counter discourses. It charts the unexplored terrain of female interracial and cross-cultural friendship and love in Victorian literature, emphasizing the agency of female travellers against the scholarly tendency to depoliticize their literary praxis. It also offers parallel narratives of three Meiji women in Britain - Tsuda Umeko, Yasui Tetsu, and Yosano Akiko -and transnational feminist alliance. The book is a celebration of the political possibility of female friendship and literature, and a reminder of the ethical responsibility of representing racial and cultural others.
