Book Japanese National Railways Privatization Study

Download or read book Japanese National Railways Privatization Study written by Kōichirō Fukui and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years have passed since the privatization process of the railway sector in Japan was initiated in 1987. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of this restructuring, showing how a formerly state-owned enterprise such as the railways can be successfully revitalized through privatization. The successful results of the Japanese privatization process are already clear. Fiscal drain has been almost entirely eliminated without raising fares. The quality of service has been greatly improved with substantially reduced number of employees and the demand for railway service continues to increase. On the other hand, there are still longer term problems such as the sales of shares to private investors and the repayment of old debts which are gigantic. This report gives the evidence on how difficult, time consuming and politically complicated, but worthwhile, it is to rectify the fiscal drain, to enhance the morale of the employees, and most importantly, to offer a better service to the users with less costs. Japan's privatization experience can provide valuable lessons to development communities, private entrepreneurs and government officials who anticipate privatizing their own railway sectors.

Book Reforming State Owned Enterprises in Asia

Download or read book Reforming State Owned Enterprises in Asia written by Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which are still significant players in many Asian economies. They provide essential public services, build and operate key infrastructure, and are often reservoirs of public employment. Their characteristics and inherent competitive advantages as publicly owned enterprises allow them to play these critical roles. Their weaknesses in governance and inefficiencies in incentive structures, however, also often lead to poor performance. SOEs must be efficient, transparent, and accountable to level the playing field for private companies, secure the growth of a vibrant private sector, and achieve sustained and inclusive economic growth. This book analyzes the reform of SOEs in Asia, the results of which are mixed. The volume concludes that some key conditions generally need to be met for SOE reforms to be successful: national bureaucracies must have the capacity to implement the reforms, and adverse impacts on international trade and investment must be avoided.

Book The Privatization of Japan Railways and Japan Post Why How and Now

Download or read book The Privatization of Japan Railways and Japan Post Why How and Now written by Chul Ju Kim and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The privatizations of Japanese National Railways (JNR) and Japan Post (JP) have been one of the biggest reforms for state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Since the beginning of the privatization processes in 1987 for JNR and 2007 for JP respectively, the outcomes of these reforms have been reflected in productivity, quality of service, as well as in diversification. The paper aims to illustrate the process and consequences for these two cases, representative of the history of SOE reforms. These two reforms have different backgrounds but the structural reform and deregulation along with the application of advanced technology in service diversification have been the key to success. Lessons learned from this process and the innovative measures taken could shed light on the reform of SOEs in the transportation and financial sectors to improve efficiency and create more diversified service platforms for society in many developing countries.

Download or read book Shinkansen written by Christopher Hood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the shinkansen – or ‘bullet train’ – passing Mount Fuji is one of the most renowned images of modern Japan. Yet, despite its international reputation for speed and punctuality, little is understood about what makes it work so well and what its impact is. This is a comprehensive account of the history of the shinkansen, from its planning during the Pacific War, to its launch in 1964 and subsequent development. It goes on to analyze the reasons behind the bullet train’s success, and demonstrates how it went from being simply a high-speed rail network to attaining the status of iconic national symbol. It considers the shinkansen’s relationship with national and regional politics and economic development, its financial viability, the environmental challenges it must cope with, and the ways in which it reflects and influences important aspects of Japanese society. It concludes by considering whether the bullet train can be successful in other countries developing high-speed railways. Overall, this book provides a thorough examination of the phenomenon of the shinkansen, and its relationship with Japanese society.
