Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations. The story which I have named “The Story of the Man who did not Wish to Die” is taken from a little book written a hundred years ago by one Shinsui Tamenaga. It is named Chosei Furo, or “Longevity.” “The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon-child” is taken from the classic “Taketari Monogatari,” and is NOT classed by the Japanese among their fairy tales, though it really belongs to this class of literature. The pictures were drawn by Mr. Kakuzo Fujiyama, a Tokio artist. In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West...FROM THE BOOKS.

Book Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales Classic Reprint written by Grace James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales is a collection of 38 "tales and legends" from the Land of the Rising Sun, published in 1912. Grace James diligently gathered these beautiful stories from various sources, including the Ko-ji-ki, which is the oldest Japanese chronicle of myths that has survived the test of time and human hands to this day. Warwick Goble, well-known illustrator of his time, enhances the appeal of the anthology by furnishing it with 16 artistic depictions of some of the characters in the stories. As he specialized in Asian themes, particularly Japanese and Indian ones, he is a fitting choice for the creation of this book. Children and young adults will find these stories a fine introduction to Japanese culture. Despite its translation into a Western language, various Eastern elements remain, such as the names of the characters and places, as well as the designations of certain figures. Also, certain Asian values, such as profound respect for elders and superiors, help youngsters understand why they are important and how they are supposed to be practiced. However, since the tales date back more than a hundred years ago, some customs featured may be deemed too conservative for modern readers. These old legends and tales effectively transports one to another era and place. As such, this anthology is a great tool for escaping into a fictional realm while, at the same time, learning or being reminded of timeless moral lessons that remain applicable today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales From Far Japan Western learning taught in the schools, and help to keep up something of the poetic and romantic feeling which we have been used to regard as an element of Japanese character. To adult readers I specially commend the preliminary chapter. In a very small Compass it gives some important facts of which it is discreditable to be in ignorance, especially now that this brilliant and progressive empire has successfully asserted her claim to take equal rank with the civilized nations of Europe. Book Japanese Treasure Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Japanese Treasure Tales Classic Reprint written by Kumasaku Tomita and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Treasure Tales Ever since I first came to England some six or seven years ago, I have had many enquiries for explanations of the incidents which occur so frequently in the art treasures of Japan, and also as to any English work in which the stories thus illustrated may be found. Such a book I have unfortunately not been able to name, the majority of English books on Japan being devoted to fairy tales, history or reviews of Japanese matters and general accounts of Japanese travels. I then formed the intention of endeavouring myself to produce such a book, and on consulting my colleague, Mr. Lee, he not only cordially approved of my design but Offered to assist me in every way possible towards its execution, and the present little volume is the result. In its preparation many unlocked for difficulties arose, such as, a scarcity of original Japanese authorities on some of the subjects; a difficulty in finding suitable treasures with which to illustrate some of the stories; and others whichit is needless to specify. The tales, such as they are, are all constructed from the best available Japanese authorities, in most cases much of the original which is of the nature of mere padding is omitted; and, in conclusion, the little work is not intended for the serious study of historians or philosophers, but is merely a humble contribution towards a know ledge of Japanese art, such as may, it is hoped, appeal to admirers of the same.
