Book Japanese Companies in East Asia

Download or read book Japanese Companies in East Asia written by Hirohiko Shinpo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy years have passed since the end of World War II. Although feelings and incidents between the victorious and the defeated nations have not disappeared, new relationships have reshaped the post World War II social, economic and political landscape, such as the establishment of the European Union and the Japan-U.S. alliance. Scholars and historians are attempting to objectively reexamine World War II. The passage of time has terminated the copyrights for the relevant document. The expectation now is more objective research on the economy and business in the inter-war period. The first edition of Japanese Companies in East Asia: History and Prospects discussed the position and role of Japanese companies in East Asia, investigating competition and alliances with Asian companies in the prewar and postwar periods. Part 1 examines Japanese investment in China in the inter-war period, and the economic competition and collaboration between Japanese and Chinese companies. Part 2 considers the current relationships between Japan and Asia, especially China and Taiwan. The success of Asian export-oriented industrialization forced Japanese companies to expand their alliances with Asian companies in leading industries. The first edition of this book was published in 2012. Since then, I have published three papers on Japanese investment and companies in the inter-war period, which are the new Part 2 of the enlarged and revised second edition. The new Part 2 illuminates the development of market-centered corporate governance and foreign direct investment based on it, and presents specific examples of collaboration between Japanese companies and host countries and regions. My recent paper, which is Chapter 9 in the new Part 3, focused on the ASEAN 100 companies and discussed the rapid economic growth and globalization of ASEAN and the remarkable expansion of relations between Japan and ASEAN. Part 3 shows that the globalization of the Japanese economy and Japanese companies are progressing on the common basis of a market economy and market-centered corporate governance in East Asia.I would appreciate readers following my research through visiting my previous and new website: http://www.hshimpo.com/en/index.php and https://sites.google.com/site/hshimpoen/.

Book Japanese Companies in East Asia History and Prospects

Download or read book Japanese Companies in East Asia History and Prospects written by Hirohiko Shimpo and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-03 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of my first book in English, Historical Development of Japanese Companies: Corporate Governance and Foreign Investment Expanded and Revised and Second Edition (2009), was to examine the development of Japanese corporate governance and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Perspectives about Japanese corporate governance and FDI, which are based on misunderstanding and intentional distortion, are unexpectedly deep-rooted both at home and abroad. Using detailed data from financial information, this book illuminates the reality and the positive contributions of Japanese companies.Based on the above, this new second book discusses the position and role of Japanese companies in East Asia, investigating competition and alliances with Asian companies in the prewar and postwar periods. Part 1 examines examples of economic competition between Japanese and Chinese companies, and sheds light on the advantages of the Japanese company in the inter-war period. This part also further expands the possibility of collaboration between Japanese and Chinese companies. Part 2 considers the relationships between current Japan and Asia, especially China and Taiwan. The success of Asian export-oriented industrialization developed the Asian economy and forced Japanese companies to change. Japanese companies are moving to more technology-intensive industries and expanding their alliances with Asian companies in leading industries. Finally this new book emphasizes the importance of participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as the most realistic and effective economic integration in Asia. Through the TPP, Japan will make more foreign investment possible, revive its economy and transfer advanced industrial technology and market-centered corporate governance to Asia.

Book Catch Up Industrialization

Download or read book Catch Up Industrialization written by Akira Suehiro and published by . This book was released on 2008-08-07 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Catch-Up Industrialization offers an innovative examination of the economies of East Asia from the 1960s into the first decade of the 21st century. The book examines the way the political ideology of "developmentalism" has driven economic growth, the significance of innovative production and management techniques, the patterns of industrial relations characteristic of late-developing economies, and the way education shapes the workforce. It concludes with an assessment of East Asian economic development following the end of the Cold War and the East Asian currency crisis of 1997, which is based on economic liberalization and the rapid diffusion of information technology." "The term "catch-up" has rich implications. While it links developing and developed countries, it also defines the socioeconomic mindset common to high-growth societies of Asia. The author's argument differs from neoclassical approaches emphasizing the workings of the market, statist ones emphasizing policy rather than private initiatives, business studies lacking macroeconomic and global perspectives, work by development economists based on agriculture, and World Bank/IMF studies that lack socio-cultural and historical understanding." "The book contributes to a wide range of academic fields, all clearly linked to the central theme of how economies "catch-up": economic and business history, contemporary Asian studies, international relations, development economics, and the socio-economic origins of entrepreneurship."--BOOK JACKET.

Book ASEAN Japan Relations

Download or read book ASEAN Japan Relations written by Takashi Shiraishi and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Partnership, the essays in this book remind us, and amplify the ASEAN-Japan relations. The complexities of this relationship, including the external influences which have impinged on its development over the years, are cogently discussed and recorded for the younger generation and students of ASEAN-Japan ties. The intricacy and spread of ASEAN-Japan cooperation mechanisms are also well highlighted in this book, while several thought-provoking commentaries on the future of this four-decade old partnership give pause to the readers. Many of the challenges that exist in this relationship originated from domestic political dynamics in the ASEAN countries and Japan, as well as from the neighbouring states and key trading partners." - Ambassador Ong Keng Yong, Former ASEAN Secretary General "The monograph on ASEAN-Japan relations is the intellectual highlight of the 40 years anniversary of ASEAN-Japan cooperation. ASEAN has become an indispensable partner and friend of Japan and its role as the hub of cooperation, development and stability in the region will without doubt become even more important after the establishment of the ASEAN Communities in 2015. The monograph containing contributions of the most renowned and respected experts on ASEAN provides us with enlightening overview, inspiration as well as guidance for our future common path. I would like to recommend this monograph to everybody interested in the further deepening of the ASEAN-Japan relations." -Ambassador Yoshinori Katori, Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia, Former Ambassador in charge of ASEAN

Book Japan s Border Issues

Download or read book Japan s Border Issues written by Akihiro Iwashita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan was sometimes described as a country of "peace" during the Cold War period, in contrast to the continental border conflicts taking place at the time, such as the China-Soviet rivalry. However, as the maritime frontier was "rediscovered" and defined by the regional powers and legal refinements of the 1970s, the process of states seeking a secure maritime zone has accelerated and maritime rivalries have become as intense as inland rivalries. This book examines the territorial disputes souring relations between Japan and its three neighbours: Russia, South Korea and China. It combines an empirical study with theoretical advancements in comparative research to understand the Cold War and post-Cold War border issues related to Japan, particularly the Northern Territories/South Kurils dispute with Russia; Takeshima/Dokto with Korea; and Senkaku/Diaoyu with China and Taiwan. Based on the history of negotiations with the Soviet Union and Russia over the course of fifty years, the study offers a series of practical suggestions to enable these disputes to be separated from arguments over their history and resolved on the basis of the principle of mutual advantage for those affected by them. This book provides not only the key to resolving these three disputes affecting East Asia, but the framework in which to seek the resolution of other territorial issues worldwide. Explaining the history and possible outcomes of Japan’s territorial disputes with Russia, South Korea and China whilst providing concrete steps for resolving entrenched territorial disputes, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Japanese Politics and International Law.

Download or read book Network Power written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of scholarly papers examines the influence of Japanese dominance on the politics, economies, and cultures of Southeast Asia. A major question probed is whether Japan has now attained, through economic power, the predominance it once sought through military means. Japan's hegemonic system is not the first to work over the area--before it were those from China, from Britain, from the United States. This collection's comparative perspective acknowledges the distinctiveness of Asian regionalism and Japan's changing role with it. As the subtitle of this book indicates, it is concerned with Japan and Asia and not with Japan in Asia, thus suggesting a complex and at the same time problematical regional identity for Japan.

Book The Greater East Asia Co Prosperity Sphere

Download or read book The Greater East Asia Co Prosperity Sphere written by Jeremy A. Yellen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Jeremy Yellen exposes the history, politics, and intrigue that characterized the era when Japan's "total empire" met the total war of World War II. He illuminates the ways in which the imperial center and its individual colonies understood the concept of the Sphere, offering two sometimes competing, sometimes complementary, and always intertwined visions—one from Japan, the other from Burma and the Philippines. Yellen argues that, from 1940 to 1945, the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere epitomized two concurrent wars for Asia's future: the first was for a new type of empire in Asia, and the second was a political war, waged by nationalist elites in the colonial capitals of Rangoon and Manila. Exploring Japanese visions for international order in the face of an ever-changing geopolitical situation, The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere explores wartime Japan's desire to shape and control its imperial future while its colonies attempted to do the same. At Japan's zenith as an imperial power, the Sphere represented a plan for regional domination; by the end of the war, it had been recast as the epitome of cooperative internationalism. In the end, the Sphere could not survive wartime defeat, and Yellen's lucidly written account reveals much about the desires of Japan as an imperial and colonial power, as well as the ways in which the subdued colonies in Burma and the Philippines jockeyed for agency and a say in the future of the region.

Book The Japan South Korea Identity Clash

Download or read book The Japan South Korea Identity Clash written by Brad Glosserman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan and South Korea are Western-style democracies with open-market economies committed to the rule of law. They are also U.S. allies. Yet despite their shared interests, shared values, and geographic proximity, divergent national identities have driven a wedge between them. Drawing on decades of expertise, Brad Glosserman and Scott A. Snyder investigate the roots of this split and its ongoing threat to the region and the world. Glosserman and Snyder isolate competing notions of national identity as the main obstacle to a productive partnership between Japan and South Korea. Through public opinion data, interviews, and years of observation, they show how fundamentally incompatible, rapidly changing conceptions of national identity in Japan and South Korea—and not struggles over power or structural issues—have complicated territorial claims and international policy. Despite changes in the governments of both countries and concerted efforts by leading political figures to encourage U.S.–ROK–Japan security cooperation, the Japan–South Korea relationship continues to be hobbled by history and its deep imprint on ideas of national identity. This book recommends bold, policy-oriented prescriptions for overcoming problems in Japan–South Korea relations and facilitating trilateral cooperation among these three Northeast Asian allies, recognizing the power of the public on issues of foreign policy, international relations, and the prospects for peace in Asia.

Book Japan And Asia Economic Development And Nation Building

Download or read book Japan And Asia Economic Development And Nation Building written by Shinichi Ichimura and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a precious reference book for development economics or the political economy of development in Asia or anywhere else. Unlike other books, first, it deals with all the East Asian countries, including Japan and other Asian countries. Second, it offers some empirical research findings based on surveys conducted by the author's group. Research on developing countries has been limited by individual scholars' observations, particularly about the value-related issues like politics or religions. Thirdly, the book digs into the nation-building problems which are often neglected by economists. It bridges the politics, sociology and economics in East Asian countries and is an important reference book for graduate students.
