Book excerpt: Printed in COLOR I gotta say I was impressed when I began looking into the Japanese Navy ships. They also have a terrific Coast Guard (around 60 ships). You will notice that I show F-35B aircraft landing on the aircraft carriers and also on the helicopter landing area on the destroyers. Not sure they can do that in rough seas, but if Elon Musk can land a rocket on a barge in the ocean, I'm confident the Japanese Navy can land an F-35B on a destroyer. Perhaps a computer on board the ship could take over controls of the F-35B during landings to compensate for the motion of the ship? This is the third book on Surface Warships we published. Generally, we stick to surface ships over 600 tons. Other books include China, Russia and Iran.

Book excerpt: China Surface Warships, 2019 - 2020. Color photos of active Chinese PLA Navy Surface Warships Recently it was announced that China's PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy (287). This book covers the bulk of Beijing's Navy including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes. These categories have seen more growth since 2005 than any other. The rapid growth of ships in these categories is in keeping with the Military Strategy China released in 2015 which states, "... the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from "offshore waters defense" to the combination of "offshore waters defense" with "open seas protection," and build a combined, multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure." The launching of new ships is in addition to retiring very old ships (pre-1990) and modernizing ships build after that. U.S. Navy ships are larger, and the U.S. has more aircraft carriers - China has one active, one being fitted out and 2 (or 3) being built. We plan to go into China's aircraft carriers in depth in another book in the fall if there is enough interest. This book does not go into the ships of the PLA Navy Reserve Force, the People's Armed Police (PAP) or the China Militia (中国民). Those could be another book if there is enough interest). Book US Navy Ships vs Japanese Attack Aircraft

Download or read book US Navy Ships vs Japanese Attack Aircraft written by Mark Stille and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The striking power of the Imperial Japanese Navy's carrier-based attack aircraft was established at Pearl Harbor, and the IJN's carrier-based torpedo and dive-bombers showed their prowess again at the Battle of Coral Sea when they sank the US Navy carrier USS Lexington and damaged the carrier USS Yorktown. Even at the disastrous Battle of Midway, the relatively small number of IJNAF attack- and torpedo-bombers that were launched against the US fleet proved that they remained a potent force by heavily damaging Yorktown again, which allowed an IJN submarine to sink the carrier. At Guadalcanal, IJNAF carrier-based aircraft sank the carrier USS Hornet and badly damaged USS Enterprise twice. However, throughout 1942, US Navy ship defences brought down an increasing number of attacking IJNAF aircraft. The final major battle of the year, the Battle of Santa Cruz, exacted crippling losses on the IJN, setting the stage for the eclipse of the IJNAF's highly trained and effective aviation attack forces. Packed with illustrations and contemporary photographs, this engrossing volume details the design, tactics, and operational records of both the US Navy ships and the IJNAF aircraft which attacked them over the year following Pearl Harbor.

Book Warships in the Komandorski Islands 1943

Download or read book Warships in the Komandorski Islands 1943 written by Mark Lardas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-24 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With ship profiles and original artwork, this study explores the warships that fought World War II's last pure surface battle, the battle itself, and why the outnumbered US Navy prevailed. The Battle of the Komandorski Islands was unique among World War II naval battles. It was the last daytime naval surface battle of World War II where aircraft played no role, and saw a squadron of US Navy cruisers and destroyers engage their Japanese counterparts over a convoy to reinforce Attu and Kiska. Exploring the warships, the battle, and why it was won, naval expert Mark Lardas explains that due to an intelligence failure, the Japanese escort was twice the size expected, with the US outnumbered 2:1 in heavy and light cruisers. Although both sides had the same number of destroyers (four each) the Japanese destroyers were newer and more powerful than their US counterparts. A 12-hour brawl of a surface action took place. Despite being badly outnumbered and badly outgunned – and even though the largest US ship was dead in the water at one point – the US Navy emerged victorious. Illustrated with archive photos, profiles of all the major warships involved, and action scenes illustrating key moments in the battle, this book explains how the US victory was achieved, and particularly highlights the importance of superior damage control.

Book A Battle History of the Imperial Japanese Navy

Download or read book A Battle History of the Imperial Japanese Navy written by Paul Dull and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost 20 years, more than 200 reels of microfilmed Japanese naval records remained in the custody of the U.S. Naval History Division, virtually untouched. This unique book draws on those sources and others to tell the story of the Pacific War from the viewpoint of the Japanese. Former Marine Corps officer and Asian scholar Paul Dull focuses on the major surface engagements of the war—Coral Sea, Midway, the crucial Solomons campaign, and the last-ditch battles in the Marianas and Philippines. Also included are detailed track charts and a selection of Japanese photographs of major vessels and actions.

Book U S Navy Against the Axis

  • Author : Vincent O'Hara
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press

Download or read book U S Navy Against the Axis written by Vincent O'Hara and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-05-11 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy against the Axis tells the story of the U.S. Navy’s surface fleet in World War II with an emphasis on ship-to-ship combat. The book refutes the widely-held notion that the attack on Pearl Harbor rendered battleships obsolete and that aviation and submarines dominated the Pacific War. It demonstrates how the surface fleet played a decisive role at critical junctures. It was crucial to America’s ultimate victory and its story holds many lessons for today’s Navy and the nation as a whole. >The U.S. Navy against the Axis describes how swift adaptability and intellectual honesty were fundamental to the Navy’s success against Japan. The underlying premise is that the nation cannot assume that in a conflict against conventional or asymmetric enemies, it holds title to the same virtues the Navy demonstrated three generations ago. Instead those lessons need to be constantly studied and affirmed in the face of postwar mythologies, lest they be forgotten.

Book Yamato

  • Author : Daniel Knowles

  • Release : 2021-01-28
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Yamato written by Daniel Knowles and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Relive the dramatic final days of the world’s largest battleship as she embarked on her final and doomed kamikaze mission • Unveil the cloak of secrecy that surrounded Japan’s ultimate warships and what American intelligence knew and when • Beautifully illustrated with many rare and unpublished photographs • A must-have for military and historians, enthusiasts, modellers, gamers, and those interested in the complexities of naval warfare during the Second World War The Yamato and her sistership Musashi represented the ultimate development in the battleship during the Second World War and were the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed. Named after the Yamato Province, Yamato was designed to counter the numerically superior fleet of the US Navy. Built amongst a shroud of secrecy and deception – and commissioned shortly after the outbreak of the war in the Pacific – she was present at a number of engagements, including the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Despite having been designed to engage and sink enemy surface vessels, the Yamato would only fire her unrivalled 18.1-inch guns at an enemy surface target on one occasion in October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In the final months of the war, as kamikaze aircraft targeted American landing fleets off Okinawa, the Yamato embarked on a one-way mission of ultimate sacrifice. In a last desperate roll of the dice in an attempt to wreak havoc on the landing forces around Okinawa, the last stepping stone prior to an invasion of the Japanese home islands, the Yamato finally succumbed to a mass aerial attack by carrier-based bombers and torpedo bombers. Despite being antiquated products of war from the moment of their construction, the Yamato and Musashi enjoy an iconic figure of Japanese might in mainstream consciousness such as films and anime.

Book The Naval Siege of Japan 1945

Download or read book The Naval Siege of Japan 1945 written by Brian Lane Herder and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final months of Allied naval bombardments on the Home Islands during World War II have, for whatever reason, frequently been overlooked by historians. Yet the Allies' final naval campaign against Japan involved the largest and arguably most successful wartime naval fleet ever assembled, and was the climax to the greatest naval war in history. Though suffering grievous losses during its early attacks, by July 1945 the United States Third Fleet wielded 1,400 aircraft just off the coast of Japan, while Task Force 37, the British Pacific Fleet's carrier and battleship striking force, was the most powerful single formation ever assembled by the Royal Navy. In the final months of the war the Third Fleet's 20 American and British aircraft carriers would hurl over 10,000 aerial sorties against the Home Islands, whilst another ten Allied battleships would inflict numerous morale-destroying shellings on Japanese coastal cities. In this illustrated study, historian Brian Lane Herder draws on primary sources and expert analysis to chronicle the full story of the Allies' Navy Siege of Japan from February 1945 to the very last days of World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to entering World War II, the Japanese Navy did a considerable planning and force development in preparation for a single “decisive battle” with the American fleet. The Japanese submarine force entered the war with highly trained crews operating some of the most capable submarines in the world. Even so, they accomplished little. This study will analyze the genesis and evolution of the technological basis of the Japanese submarine fleet before and during the war. Along with the technological evolution, it will also review the strategic and tactical evolution of the force. It will further analyze the employment of submarines as they apply to two major forms of naval warfare: guerre de course and guerre de main. While the entire study will use comparison with the American and German, the majority of the focus will be on the unique aspects of the Japanese employment of their submarines. These analyses will answer whether the Japanese submarine force would have been capable of influencing the results of major battles and the overall campaign in the Pacific Ocean. Could the Japanese submarine force have influenced the result of the war allowing it to end with a more favorable outcome for the Japanese?
