Book Agricultural Trade Protectionism in Japan

Download or read book Agricultural Trade Protectionism in Japan written by Delbert A. Fitchett and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper has been undertaken as a survey of the agricultural trade policies of one of the world's major importers of agricultural commodities. Drawing on material from a variety of English language sources this study weaves together the interrelationships between the domestic agricultural policies and the trade regime for foodstuffs in Japan. The evolution of the sector in the last two decades under the umbrella of these policies is outlined. Quantitative estimates of the economic costs of these policies are reviewed. The lessons of the Japanese experience are found to be especially important in cautioning the LDCs of the dangers of sheltering the agricultural sector from the economically efficient adjustment processes which both accompany and support a sustainable development process.

Book Japan s Agri Food Sector and the Trans Pacific Partnership

Download or read book Japan s Agri Food Sector and the Trans Pacific Partnership written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's agriculture has been inward oriented, protected by trade barriers from foreign competition. Even though the share of Japan's food consumption provided by Japanese production has gradually fallen, Japan's farm sector remains the second-largest among the countries negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Japan's food industry is increasingly integrated with TPP economies, although the TPP share of Japan's agri-cultural imports has fallen over time. The proposed TPP agreement would lead to more agricultural exports to Japan from TPP partners, likely dominating the total agricultural trade impact of such an agreement. Despite potentially large import increases, espe-cially in the rice, beef, and dairy sectors, the proposed agreement would only margin-ally reduce Japan's output. Intrinsic strengths of Japanese agricultural production and constraints to the growth of supply in the rest of the TPP countries may limit the impact of the agreement on Japan's agriculture. Nevertheless, U.S. exports would be well posi-tioned to meet Japan's new import demand.

Book Protectionist Measures within the Japanese Agricultural Sector

Download or read book Protectionist Measures within the Japanese Agricultural Sector written by Remi Bauer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-12-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,3, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: In its latest White Paper on International Economy and Trade 2009, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry listed prevention of protectionism as one of its courses for “Domestic and foreign integrated economic measures” (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry 2009). With 153 member states in the World Trade Organization, formerly known as General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which is a multilateral institution that liberalizes trade, establishes trade agreements and solves trade disputes, one might think that protectionism should not be a problem in the 21st century (Gabler Verlag 2009b). Japan joined the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in 1955 and is still a member of the World Trade Organization today. However, the government of this nation still feels the necessity to state deterrence of protectionist measures in a paper which was only published in June 2009 (World Trade Organization 2009a). Thus, the question arises how important is protectionism for Japan nowadays. This question will be answered by explaining protectionist measures and looking at the historical development of such measures in Japan since 1945 in the agricultural sector. The agricultural sector is interesting since Japan's agricultural imports accounted to over $50 billion in 2008. After the United States of America and the European Union, Japan is the third largest importer of agricultural goods. Based on total calories consumed, Japan imports about 60 per cent of its food sources annually (United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service 2009a). By evaluating official government sources, the current situation is assessed and the effects of protectionist measures on imports by focusing on the agricultural sector will be elaborated.
