Book The role of CITES in the governance of transnational timber trade

Download or read book The role of CITES in the governance of transnational timber trade written by Rosalind Reeve and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scoping paper analyzes the governance of trade in timber-producing species regulated by CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) in light of the Convention’s increasing relevance as a tool to control transnational timber trade. The CITES regulatory framework is outlined as it relates to tree species, along with the compliance mechanisms developed to build range state capacity for implementing trade controls in relation to tropical timber species and to apply sanctions to countries that fail to take recommended action to resolve implementation problems. The study describes stricter domestic measures developed by consumer countries, most notably the EU, to control imports of CITES-listed species, including trees, as well as additional regulatory frameworks designed by importing countries to exclude illegal timber from their markets. It also examines the implications for CITES of regional economic integration given the Convention’s dependence on national border controls, with a focus on experience in the EU and trends in Asia. Key findings from three case studies of how CITES has approached governance of trade in valuable timber-producing species – ramin (Gonystylus spp.) from Asia, afrormosia (Pericopsis elata) from Central and West Africa and bigleaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) from Latin America – are presented and other potential case studies identified. The study concludes by identifying priority areas where further research could contribute towards catalyzing positive change to strengthen the governance of transnational timber trade, and ultimately towards the survival of tree species traded illegally and unsustainably.

Book The Global Forest Sector

Download or read book The Global Forest Sector written by Eric Hansen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in production, demand, supply, and trade patterns; the impact of green building and bioenergy on industry practices and policy infrastructure; and new economies with production advantages and large consumption bases all present challenges and opportunities in the forest sector. With contributions from leading experts in academia and professional organizations, The Global Forest Sector: Changes, Practices, and Prospects fills a gap in the literature that is preventing students, scholars, and policy makers from developing a timely, structured, big-picture view of forest sector business. In addition, the book reviews current thinking on a wide variety of business management issues in the forest sector. The book covers managing change in the global forest sector and the impact of globalization on forest users. It discusses markets and market forces, new products and product categories, and the influence of China and Russia. The book then examines the environmental paradigm, including environmental activism, sustainability, and the impact of green building and bioenergy. The book concludes with coverage of the role of information technology, corporate social responsibility, innovation, and next steps. Overall, this book helps readers both develop a bird’s eye view of the changes surrounding the forest sector as well as have a magnified view of numerous managerial issues associated with these changes. The content paints a picture of the current and changing forest sector including the state of forests, the nature of markets, the newly emerged patterns of stakeholder impact, and evolution of key business practices. It provides the foundation needed to develop the conservation-based economy required for future success in the global forest sector.

This book was released on 2006-01-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are a vital part of the world's ecosystem and support about 1.6 billion people worldwide. However, natural forests, which once accounted for 48 per cent of land cover, has now been reduced to 29 per cent and continues to decrease every year. These resources are irreplaceable and their loss has profound economic, social and environmental consequences. The Committee's report examines developments in UK public procurement practices since its earlier reports on sustainable public procurement (HCP 792-I, session 2001-02, ISBN 0215004671; published in July 2002 and HCP 266, session 2004-05, ISBN 0215024303; published April 2005). Issues discussed include: developments in the timber trade on illegal logging, recent revised Government guidance on procurement of legal and sustainable timber, the creation of a Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET) within DEFRA and the EU's Forest Law, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) action plan.

Download or read book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade written by Edward B Barbier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade provides a detailed analysis of the economic linkages between the trade and forest degradation. Based on a report prepared for the ITTO, it looks current and future market conditions at the time of publication, and assesses the impacts on current and future market conditions, and assesses the impacts on tropical forests of both the international timber trade and domestic demand. The authors examine the causes of deforestation and compare the environmental impacts of the timber trade with other factors, such as the conversion of the forests to agriculture. Finally, they assess the national and international trade policy options, and discuss the potential role of interventions in the international timber trade in promoting efficient and sustainable use of forest resources. The book will be of interest to those concerned with forest management and policy, trade and environment, and with the economics of conversation and resource use.

Book Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan

Download or read book Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan written by Yoshiya Iwai and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Japan, like many other forest-dependent nations, has been facing difficult times: forest self-sufficiency is low; unplanted areas after harvesting are increasing; and forest industries and companies are losing international competitiveness in the global market. Such challenges, however, are not unique to Japan but are relevant - and all too familiar - to forest industry stakeholders around the world. This book, representing the work of distinguished Japanese scholars, is the first comprehensive English-language overview of forestry, forest management, and the forest products industry in Japan. Chapters address the biological and physical evolution of the forest, forest-dependent industries, the social impact of changes in forest utilization, current trends in the forest estate, and the relationship between urban population and rural forest land. Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan will be welcomed by scholars, students, and policy makers in the areas of forest policy, international trade, international forestry, and forest products marketing.

The three papers focus on three different aspects of the lumber market, allowing us to better understand the processes influencing the softwood lumber market in Japan. In the first paper, the loss of competitiveness in Japanese forestry is discussed and analysed. In the second paper, the lumber trade from 1961 to 1997 is empirically modelled and factors influencing imports of lumber are identified. The third paper concentrates on the growing import of European lumber during the latter part of the 1990s"--Objective.
