Book The Routledge Handbook to Regional Development in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook to Regional Development in Central and Eastern Europe written by Gábor Lux and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years into transformation, Central and Eastern European regions have undergone substantial socio-economic restructuring, integrating into European and global networks and producing new patterns of regional differentiation and development. Yet post-socialist modernisation has not been without its contradictions, manifesting in increasing social and territorial inequalities. Recent studies also suggest there are apparent limits to post-socialist growth models, accompanying a new set of challenges within an increasingly uncertain world. Aiming to deliver a new synthesis of regional development issues at the crossroads between ‘post-socialism’ and ‘post-transition’, this book identifies the main driving forces of spatial restructuring in Central and Eastern Europe, and charts the different regional development paths which take shape against the backdrop of post-crisis Europe. A comparative approach is used to highlight common development challenges and the underlying patterns of socio-economic differentiation alike. The issues investigated within the Handbook extend to a discussion of the varied economic consequences of transition, the social structures and institutional systems which underpin development processes, and the broadly understood sustainability of Central and Eastern Europe’s current development model. This book will be of interest to academics and policymakers working in the fields of regional studies, economic geography, development studies and policy.

Book Classic Railroad Signals

Download or read book Classic Railroad Signals written by Brian Solomon and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history, quirks, and stories behind signals with gorgeous period and contemprary photography. Railroad signals are the link between the steam era and modern railroading. Designed for reliability and durability, signals can survive for decades. In fact, old semaphores installed during the early years of the twentieth century were still in service during the 1990s, protecting trains that were running with the latest modern diesels. Even searchlight-style signals that were the epitome of 1940s railroading continue to work today. Though standards were introduced in the early twentieth century, interpretation varied greatly among railroads, so even major railroads have individualized signals. Some, such as the Pennsylvania Railroad, were noted for their distinctive signaling hardware. Others lines became known for their peculiarities in practice. Classic Railroad Signals examines how different railroads developed specific hardware to serve their unique needs, in the process tracing the lineage of various types of hardware and highlighting how and where they were used. From nineteenth-century mechanical signals to disc signals, upper- and lower-quadrant semaphores, three-light electric signals, searchlight-style targets, positional lights, and color-position light hardware, author Brian Solomon covers nearly every conceivable piece of North American signaling hardware, even the virtually extinct wig wag that was once standard in California and Wisconsin. Gorgeous period and contemprary photography shows signals and trains from around North America. Classic Railroad Signals should be next to Railroad Signaling on every railroad fan's bookshelf.

Book Review of Developments in Transport and Communications in the ESCAP Region 1996 2001

Download or read book Review of Developments in Transport and Communications in the ESCAP Region 1996 2001 written by United Nations. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides a review of progress made in the transport sector in the ESCAP region since 1996. Over this period, the development of roads, railways, shipping, ports, inland waterways and the air transport sector has shown significant though uneven, progress in the region. While the financial crisis of 1977-1998 has to a degree eased the strains on transport infrastructure to meet rapidly rising demand, the increasing scarcity of financial resources appears to have accelerated institutional changes and changes in infrastructure financing.

Download or read book Alco Locomotives written by Brian Solomon and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the second-largest steam locomotive builder in the U.S., American Locomotive Company (Alco) produced 75,000 locomotives, among them such famous examples as the 4-6-4 Hudsons and 4-8-4 Niagaras built for the New York Central, and the 4-6-6-4 Challengers and 4-8-8-4 Big Boys built for the Union Pacific. Alco Locomotives is the first book to tell the full story of this company central to American railroad history—and beloved by railfans for its rich heritage and its underdog appeal. Noted rail historian Brian Solomon looks back at the founding of Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1848 and proceeds to cover that company’s merger with several smaller locomotive builders in 1901 to form Alco. Solomon describes the locomotives that made Alco’s name around the world, from the standard designs like Mikados, Atlantics, and Mallets to the more powerful and flashy post–World War I models. His detailed, richly illustrated narrative re-creates the drama of a tough, ambitious company in the American tradition—rising again and again to the demands of an ever-changing industry and economy. Solomon also covers Alco electrics (built in partnership with GE), as well as the company’s successful and quirky diesel offerings, including the RS-2 and RS-3 road switchers, FA/FB road freight units, PA road passenger diesel, and the wares of Canadian affiliate Montreal Locomotive Works. Enlivened by numerous historical photographs, modern images, curious details, and firsthand accounts, this history is a complete, fascinating, and fitting tribute to a true icon of American railroading.
