Book Light Years

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Benjamin Godfrey
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Light Years written by Mark Benjamin Godfrey and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography played a critical role in conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s, as artists turned to photography as both medium and subject matter. Light Years offers the first major survey of the key artists of this period who used photography to new and inventive ends. Whereas some employed photographic images to create slide projections, photographic canvases, and artists' books, others integrated them into sculptural assemblages and multimedia installations. This book highlights the work of acclaimed international artists such as Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Giuseppe Penone, and Ed Ruscha. Matthew Witkovsky's essay provides the larger context for photography within conceptual art, a theme that is further elaborated in texts by Mark Godfrey, Anne Rorimer, and Joshua Shannon. An essay by Robin Kelsey focuses on the pioneering work of John Baldessari in which he explored the element of chance, and an essay by Giuliano Sergio illuminates the lesser-known work of Arte Povera, an Italian movement that sought to dismantle established conventions in both the making and presentation of art.

Book The Question of Painting

Download or read book The Question of Painting written by Jorella Andrews and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the latter half of the 20th century, committed art has been associated with conceptual, critical and activist practices. Painting, by contrast, is all too often defined as an outmoded, reactionary, market-led venture; an ineffectual medium from the perspective of social and political engagement. How can paintings change the world today? The question of painting, in particular, fuelled the investigations of a major 20th-century philosopher: the French phenomenologist, Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1907-61). Merleau-Ponty was at the forefront of attempts to place philosophy on a new footing by contravening the authority of Cartesian dualism and objectivist thought-an authority that continues to limit present-day intellectual, imaginative, and ethical possibilities. A central aim of The Question of Painting is to provide a closely focused, chronological account of his unfolding project and its relationship with art, clarifying how painting, as a paradigmatically embodied and situated mode of investigation, helped him to access the fundamentally “intercorporeal” basis of reality as he saw it, and articulate its lived implications. With an exclusive and extended conversation about the contemporary virtues of painting with New York based artist Leah Durner, for whom the work of Merleau-Ponty is an important source of inspiration, The Question of Painting brings today's much debated concerns about the criticality of painting into contact with the question of painting in philosophy.

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Color Chart written by Ann Temkin and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2008 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color Chart celebrates a paradox: the lush beauty that results when contemporary artists assign colour decisions to chance, readymade source or arbitrary system. Midway through the 20th century, long-held convictions regarding the spiritual truth or scientific validity of particular colours gave way to an excitement about colour as a mass-produced and standardized commercial product. The Romantic quest for personal expression instead became Andy Warhol's 'I want to be a machine'; the artistry of mixing pigments was eclipsed by Frank Stella's 'Straight out of the can; it can't get better than that'. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, is the first devoted to this pivotal transformation, and features work by some forty artists ranging from Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to Sherrie Levine and Damien Hirst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring more than 100 extraordinary works of art from 1800 to the present, Earth Matters reveals how African individuals and communities have visually mediated their most poignant relationships with the land—whether it be to earth as a sacred or medicinal material, as something uncovered by mining or claimed by burial, as a surface to be interpreted and turned to for inspiration, or as an environment to be protected. Both internationally recognized and emerging contemporary artists are represented, from the continent and diaspora, including El Anatsui, Ghada Amer, Sammy Baloji, Ingrid Mwangi and William Kentridge. Highlights include a pair of rare Yoruba onile figures, a one-of-a-kind Punu reliquary from Gabon, and 3 bocio figures from the personal collection of legendary French dealer Jacques Kerchache. The text includes statements by contemporary African artists including Wangechi Mutu, Clive van den Berg, Allan de Souza, and George Osodi. National Museum of African Art curator Karen E. Milbourne explores how diverse African concepts of healing, the sacred, identity, memory, history, and environmental sustainability have all been formed in relation to the land in this pioneering scholarly study.

Book Anna Atkins Photographs of British Alg

Download or read book Anna Atkins Photographs of British Alg written by and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after William Henry Fox Talbot announced his invention of photography in 1839, the dedicated amateur botanist Anna Atkins, daughter of a prominent British scientist, began to experiment with the new medium. In 1843 she turned to her friend Sir John Herschel's recently discovered cyanotype process to publish her growing collection of native seaweeds--a daring way to introduce photography into book illustration. At regular intervals over the next decade, Atkins printed and issued these bracingly modern, deeply-hued photograms to her "botanical friends" in the form of hand-stitched fascicles of a book she entitled Photographs of British Algæ: Cyanotype Impressions . The fi rst book to be illustrated by photography and the earliest sustained application of photography to science, British Algæ is a landmark in the histories of publishing and photography. Of the nearly two dozen substantially complete or partial copies known to exist, each is distinct in its appearance and often in its number and arrange- ment of plates. The set of 13 parts she gave to Sir John Herschel--now in the Spencer Collection of The New York Public Library--is especially important and was carefully preserved by generations of the Herschel family exactly as Sir John received it. This sumptuous facsimile edition reproduces the recto and verso of each plate, presenting the work as its creator intended: as bound volumes to lingered over, studied and admired, page by extraordinary page.

Book excerpt: The turning away from the picture is one of the biggest upheavals in 20th century art history. Conceptual Art took the place of figurative painting. This significant paradigm shift is also underscored by the important role that the legendary Dsseldorf gallerist and collector Konrad Fischer played in the international art scene starting in the 1960s.Konrad Fischer established his gallery, which he developed into one of the most influential galleries in the world, in 1967. He represented artists of Minimal and Conceptual Art such as Carl Andre, Joseph Beuys, Hanne Darboven, Hamish Fulton, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, or Bruce Nauman. The gallery gained art-historical importance above all through exhibiting American artists, and thus contributed to making Dsseldorf into a hotspot for contemporary art.The State of North Rhine - Westphalia acquired the impressive art collection of Konrad Fischer and his wife, comprising 250 works by some 35 artists, as well as the gallery archive, for the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen at the beginning of 2014.
