Book excerpt: James V suffered the fate of many a son of a famous father in being somewhat overshadowed not only by his father James IV but also by his internationally renowned daughter Mary Queen of Scots. But no-one would deny the importance of his reign, embracing as it did the establishment of the Court of Session, the birthpangs of religious dissent, and the growth of royal power to such a remarkable extent that this king could leave his kingdom for nine months in 1536-7 without fear of rebellion. Jamie Cameron concentrates on James V's style of government and relations with his nobility, and challenges the widely held view of a vindictive and irrational king, motivated largely by greed, who antagonised most of his leading magnates and met his just deserts when they refused to support him in 1542. This book offers a different view, and presents us with a rounded picture of a king whose approach to government, in spite of some personal defects, closely resembles that of his supposedly more popular father; and, like James IV himself, retained impressive magnate support to the end of his reign.

Book excerpt: The defeat of the Scots in the Battle of Flodden in 1513 left many of the leaders of Scottish society, including King James IV, lying dead on the battlefield. The long and complex minority of King James V which followed is explored in detail in this book, bringing understanding to the evolving relationships among the Scots, English and French against the background of the wider European context of the early sixteenth century. The competing interests of England and France were personified in two of the Scottish Regents: Queen Margaret Tudor, the sister of Henry VIII, and John, Duke of Albany, James V's nearest male heir, who had been brought up in France and represented the French connection as much as the Scots. The interests of leading Scots' families, the Hamiltons and the Douglases, were also at the heart of the power struggle. The book offers a rare insight into a turbulent period of Scottish politics.

Book excerpt: Joth Proctor is an under-employed, criminal defense lawyer with a marginal solo practice in Arlington, Virginia, where a mix of southern charm, shady business dealings, and Washington, D.C. intrigue pervade the story. Upon the suspicious death of the wife of a close friend, Proctor enters a web of drug and alcohol abuse, family real estate deceit, and friends of questionable character whose intentions are not to be trusted. An ex-athlete, Proctor is cynical but principled, world-weary and still preoccupied with Heather Burke, the woman who jilted him years ago and remains a crucial player in his professional life. Everyone he knows and meets seems willing to bend the law and compromise their ethical standards in the pursuit of individual self-interest. Proctor places his reputation at risk as he navigates a world of strip clubs, corrupt cops, con men and crooks, including the sinister Jimmie Flambeau. Increasingly isolated, Joth must live by his wits in the midst of volatile circumstances and unpredictable twists of fate that place his career, his life and the lives of those he loves in jeopardy. "As an ex-prosecutor and practicing attorney, I find Jim Irving's book series to be authentic, gripping and right on point, and as a reader, I couldn't put it down. His protagonist, Joth, reminds me, for better or worse, of several lawyers I have known, and I hope and pray that aspiring lawyers will learn from his experience. I highly recommend all three books in the series." —Steve Moriarty, ex-Fairfax County, Virginia prosecutor "Friends Like These portrays several excellent character studies set amidst a legal world of scrupulous and sketchy figures, which, unfortunately, is probably occurring all over America. Irving shines a wild, informative, and highly entertaining light on all kinds of despicable behavior in his entertaining cannon of "people behaving badly"." —Kathryn Smerling, PhD, MSW Dean’s Council, NYU School of Social Work "Irving’s writing is relaxed and authentic and takes readers inside a compelling world of legal and social issues. For anyone taking a vacation, I have a fine book series to recommend." —Bruce Kluger, columnist, USA Today "Friends Like These is a welcome book series for anyone wishing to escape their own world and dip their toes into a netherworld of do-gooders, procrastinators and outright criminals. As a psychiatrist, I find his characters genuine and fascinating. As a private reader, he’s got me hooked on a roller coaster of mystery and real-life adventure." — Mark Banschick, MD, family psychiatrist, author, The Intelligent Divorce, Books One and Two

Book excerpt: 1513; King James IV lies dead on Flodden's field, his young heir entrusted to two low-born lairds. There are many who seek to supplant or control the boy-king, and only his loyal protectors stand in their way . . . Two hundred years earlier, Robert the Bruce had driven out the English and restored his nation's pride. But now the King of Scotland lay dead amongst the bloody slaughter of Flodden. Now as fate decreed, the new king, James V, was a child, just seventeen months old. And that same fate had in store intriguing roles for two young men. David Lindsay and David Beaton - neither high-born, each the son of a lowland laird - were caught up in the very centre of the storm of hatred, fear, treachery and ambition that followed the young king's coming to the throne. Buffeted by events that would involve England, France, the Empire and even the Vatican, each was to win his own very special place in history... Book A New Landlord and Tenant

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Sparkes
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2001-02-13
  • ISBN : 1847311725
  • Pages : 972 pages

Download or read book A New Landlord and Tenant written by Peter Sparkes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-02-13 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to complement the author's A New Land Law,integrating with that work in its simplified terminology, and emphasising a three-fold functional classification of leases – short residential tenancies, long residential leases and commercial leases. Rented housing is treated as a unified whole, with particular prominence being given to shorthold arrangements. The book includes reference to the changes to the allocation and homelessness regimes proposed by Part II of the Homes Bill 2000. It also considers the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998, the changes to repossession procedures implemented by the Woolf Reforms, and the year 2000 bumper crop of decisions on housing law. Leasehold tenure is undergoing dramatic changes. The book draws a functional distinction between long residential leases and rental arrangements, based on the registrability of long leases, their freedom from rent controls and security of tenure, special controls of management and forfeiture, and enfranchisement rights. Extensive coverage is given to the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill 2000, introduced into the House of Lords in December 2000, and promising improvements in the enfranchisement schemes, additional management controls, and a commonhold scheme. Topics on commercial leases (business and agricultural) given special attention include the reasonable recipient principle for the construction of notices, a decision on the effect on a sub-tenant of an upwards notice to quit by his head tenant, and Law Commission proposals on the Termination of Tenancies (1999).

The boy king, James V was at the mercy of ambitous rival factions, and beyond them, the ever-watchful, looming presence of Henry VIII of England. Escaping from the clutches of the power-hungry Earl of Angus, his most effective guides were to be two old friends, David Lindsay and David Beaton. But, impetuous and hot-blooded, James was more interested in wine and women than affairs of state, and his royal advisers faced a mighty task as they helped the king attain his regal status in a land full of treachery and danger. Book Redemption Songs

  • Author : Lea VanderVelde
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Redemption Songs written by Lea VanderVelde and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dred Scott case is the most notorious example of slaves suing for freedom. Most examinations of the case focus on its notorious verdict, and the repercussions that the decision set off-especially the worsening of the sectional crisis that would eventually lead to the Civil War-were extreme. In conventional assessment, a slave losing a lawsuit against his master seems unremarkable. But in fact, that case was just one of many freedom suits brought by slaves in the antebellum period; an example of slaves working within the confines of the U.S. legal system (and defying their masters in the process) in an attempt to win the ultimate prize: their freedom. And until Dred Scott, the St. Louis courts adhered to the rule of law to serve justice by recognizing the legal rights of the least well-off. For over a decade, legal scholar Lea VanderVelde has been building and examining a collection of more than 300 newly discovered freedom suits in St. Louis. In Redemption Songs, VanderVelde describes twelve of these never-before analyzed cases in close detail. Through these remarkable accounts, she takes readers beyond the narrative of the Dred Scott case to weave a diverse tapestry of freedom suits and slave lives on the frontier. By grounding this research in St. Louis, a city defined by the Antebellum frontier, VanderVelde reveals the unique circumstances surrounding the institution of slavery in westward expansion. Her investigation shows the enormous degree of variation among the individual litigants in the lives that lead to their decision to file suit for freedom. Although Dred Scott's loss is the most widely remembered, over 100 of the 300 St. Louis cases that went to court resulted in the plaintiff's emancipation. Beyond the successful outcomes, the very existence of these freedom suits helped to reshape the parameters of American slavery in the nation's expansion. Thanks to VanderVelde's thorough and original research, we can hear for the first time the vivid stories of a seemingly powerless group who chose to use a legal system that was so often arrayed against them in their fight for freedom from slavery.
