Book James Hamilton of South Carolina

Download or read book James Hamilton of South Carolina written by Robert Tinkler and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An esteemed planter, politician, and military leader influential in the affairs of both South Carolina and Texas, James Hamilton (1786--1857) so declined in reputation during the last twenty years of his life that his home state refused to acknowledge him when he died. Robert Tinkler's superb, first-published biography of Hamilton conveys the enormous drama, dignity, and pathos that marked Hamilton's pursuit of the greatness achieved by his prominent Revolutionary-era forebears and his subsequent profound reversal brought on by debt. While a member of Congress during the 1820s, Hamilton came to champion states' interests over a strong central national government. As governor of South Carolina, 1830--1832, he reached the pinnacle of his political and social glory when he presided over the Nullification Crisis of 1832. Hamilton's undoing began with a series of ill-advised cotton speculations that left him deeply and very publicly in arrears by 1839. He desperately sought relief -- even supporting the Compromise of 1850 in hopes of monetary benefit, while alienating his old allies in the process. To his fellow southerners, Hamilton became a scourge and embarrassment as one who compromised his political beliefs because of fiscal distress. Perhaps even more than his political apostasy, Hamilton's unforgivable offense may have been to remind planters of their own struggles with chronic debt. Tinkler's extraordinary research into both Hamilton's life and the dynamics of reputation and debt in the antebellum South suggests that many contemporaries simply wished to forget Hamilton's plight so as to avoid facing their own financial reality. Possessing the weight of tragedy, James Hamilton of South Carolina documents a powerful man's achievements and the events and personal flaws that led to his fall.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Obituary Addresses on the Occassion of the Death of General James Hamilton, of South Carolina On opening the Court, Mr. T. N. Waul announced the intelligence of the death of Gen. James Hamilton, and moved that the Court adjourn. Mr. Waul said. May it Please the Court: Since the adjournment last evening, the mournful intelligence of the death of Gen. James Hamilton, of South Carolina, has cast its sorrowful shadow over this city. The Governor of the State, by special message - the Senate and the House of Representatives, by resolutions, have expressed their grief for his loss, and their deep sympathies for his bereaved family. The sad duty has devolved upon me to suggest some appropriate testimonial from the Supreme Court of the State. Your presence, sir, as Chief Justice, long his personal friend - our early association in the same State - renew the memories of past years. The dead seem alive, and Gen. Hamilton as he was in 1830, appears in vigorous manhood, gifted in person and intellect, persuasive, eloquent, and earnest: he was in every sense of the word an orator. Book Rice Gold

Download or read book Rice Gold written by James Bagwell and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a wealth of information, particularly from primary sources such as diaries, letters, plantation records, etc., the author has recreated the story of James Hamilton Couper and his times into an exciting, interesting, and readable account. The work begins with an introductory chapter. The Georgia Coast, a land of sluggish rivers, murkey blackwater swamps, and studded with a string of islands, is the home of a special breed of people. The are as wild, reckless, exciting, beautiful, and contradictory as the land itself.Bagwell examines the Couper heritage, from kings, war, and intrigue in Scotland to their firm establishment on the Georgia Coast. As colonial times move into antebellum, the Coupers progress, especially with James Hamilton Couper of Hopeton Plantation. On his grand tour of Europe, many on that continent commented on the abilities and potential of this young man.Couper made quite a name for himself in the area of politics, plantation management, scientific agriculture, archaeology, and architectural design. In the sinking of the Pulaski, he was hailed the hero of the occasion. The publication of this volume will be a valuable addition to the history and culture of the South, especially Georgia and its coast.
