Book excerpt: Small sized text book by Jalal Toufic, published in conjunction with the exhibition Let's be honest, the weather helped by Walid Raad at Moderna Museet, Stockholm (February 15 - May 10 2020).0Joan Copjec about the book: A brilliant, ramifying series of thought experiments, Postscripts rigorously avoids becoming a no-stakes mind game. Here, the stakes - political, aesthetic, ethical - are quite high. For, the experiments are rigged to combust those ideas and stances that are insufficiently tolerant of counterfactuals - fail to pass their test. Deadly serious and humorous at once, these thought rifts for a moment expose what is unthinkable - but for the creative collaboration they stage between the two aspects of "the mortal, dead while still alive" - before it is once again abducted. Jalal Toufic invents and masters his own transversal genre, sentence by ingeniously-placed sentence. 00.

Book excerpt: Jalal Toufic?s ?Postscripts? appears on the occasion of the exhibition ?Let?s be honest, the weather helped? by Walid Raad at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. The author has made known that some works are not just thought-provoking, they are also initiations into thinking. The aphorisms included in ?Postscripts? function as supplements to Toufic?s previous books, being at the same time both clarifications and disclosures of his earlier material. It is a series of thought experiments constructed from discontinuous scenes, reflections, and questions about the complex relationship between reality and fiction, simulation and phantasy, dreaming and wakefulness, and life and death.

Book Two Or Three Things I m Dying to Tell You

Download or read book Two Or Three Things I m Dying to Tell You written by Jalal Toufic and published by Post Apollo Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Writing. "What was Orpheus dying to tell his wife, Eurydice? What was Judy dying to tell her beloved, Scottie, in Hitchcock's Vertigo? What were the previous one-night wives of King Shahrayar dying to tell Shahrazad? What was the Christian God "dying" to tell us? What were the faces of the candidates in the 2000 parliamentary election in Lebanon "dying" to tell voters and nonvoters alike? While writing (Vampires): An Uneasy Essay on the Undead in Film and Undying Love, or Love Dies, I, a mortal to death, was dying to tell these books' readers and myself about diegetic silence-over, which produces a dead stop and reveals the occasional natural immobilization of the living as merely a variety of movement; and an unreality that sometimes behaves in a filmic manner, inducing the undead to wonder: "Am I in a film?"; as well as a significant number of other anomalies"--Jalal Toufic. "Resurrection through simulation-an end time fantasy in real time. The graves open...the dead walk...Toufic is a sort of postructuralist spiritualist, a critical medium for the peculiar specters that haunt the society of the spectacle." Ben Lerner "Jalal Toufic is an amazing writer. He documents the moves of consciousness in a way that leads the reader ever deeper, from impasse to illusion to new impasse turning the trap of what can't be named' into a true paradise." Richard Forema"

Book The Art Salon in the Arab Region

Download or read book The Art Salon in the Arab Region written by Monique Bellan and published by Ergon. This book was released on 2019-03 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the emergence and role of the art salon in the Arab region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing on Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq. Institutional forms of exhibiting and teaching art emerged in the Middle East and North Africa in late colonial and early post-colonial contexts. The book examines how the salon had an impact on the formation of taste and on debates on art, and discusses the transfers and cultural interactions between the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. Following the institutional model of the Paris salons, art salons emerged in Algiers, Tunis and Cairo starting in the late 1880s. In Beirut, the salon tradition reached its peak only after independence in the mid-twentieth century. Baghdad never had a formal salon, but alternative spaces and exhibition formats developed in Iraq from the late 1940s onwards. As in Paris, the salons in the region often defined the criteria of artistic production and public taste. The impact of the salon also lay in its ability to convey particular values, attitudes and aspirations. At the same time, the values and attitudes promoted by the salon as well as the salon itself were often subject to debate, which led to the creation of counter-salons or alternative exhibition practices. The art salon helps us to understand changes in the art systems of these countries, including the development of art schools, exhibition spaces and artist societies, and gives insight into the power dynamics at play. It also highlights networks and circulations between the Arab region and Europe.

Book excerpt: A magnificent and indispensable portrayal of the rich folklore of the Islamic world. According to Islamic tradition, Allah created three types of beings: angels, made of light; humans, made of earth; and jinn, made of smokeless fire. Supernatural, shape-shifting, intelligent and blessed with free will and remarkable powers, jinn have over the ages been given many names - demon, spirit, ghoul, genie, ifrit and shaitan. Legends of the Fire Spirits explores through time and across nations the enduring phenomenon of the jinn. From North Africa to Central Asia, from the Mediterranean to sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, this riveting, often chilling, yet reasoned book draws on ancient testimonies, medieval histories, colonial records, anthropologist's reports and traveller's tales to explore the different types of jinn, their behaviour, society, culture and long history of contact with humankind. It documents their links with famous figures in history such as King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and illustrates the varied and vivid portrayals of jinn in world literature. Book Undying Love Or Love Dies

Download or read book Undying Love Or Love Dies written by Jalal Toufic and published by Post Apollo Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoir. Essay. The latest book from an original writer, thinker and filmmaker whose other books (also available from SPD) have attracted a considerable following. "This, Jalal Toufic's fifth book, can be read as a single aphorism, an aphorism composed of aphorisms. And although it is the shortest of his books to date, it is the greatest. Under love's rubric, themes from Toufic's earlier books reappear - memory, the untimely occurrence, the undead of history and their recurrence in film, the hyperrealities of oblivion, ruination. The book is set in contexts (and particularly that of the Arab World) in which not time but other faster forces are bringing about an end to things. There is, in my opinion, no more subtle or powerful thinker today than Jalal Toufic, and none whose ideas are, in the end, more beautiful" - Lyn Hejinian.
