Book Ancient Indian Astronomy and Contributions of Samanta Chandra Sekhar

Download or read book Ancient Indian Astronomy and Contributions of Samanta Chandra Sekhar written by L. Satpathy and published by Alpha Science Int'l Ltd.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samanta Chandra Sekhar (1835-1904) occupies a special position in Ancient Indian Astronomy, being the last link in a long chain of illustrious astronomers commencing with Aryabhata (5th century AD). The book describes how he identified errors accumulated over the ages, eradicated them and brought the subject to final perfection. The discovery of the three anomalies in the motion of the moon, hiking of the Earth-Sun distance by more than ten times the value taken by his predecessors and his novel planetary model with heliocentric motion of the planets are some of his major contributions. How astronomy developed in ancient civilizations of the world, and the frontier topics in astrophysics like Dark Matter etc. discussed in a few articles help in developing an integral perspective of the reader.

Download or read book Zero Point of Jain Astronomy written by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and published by Mount Meru Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jain astronomy provides an important link between Vedic astronomy and classical Hindu astronomy. Jain texts such as Jambudvipaprajnapti, Suryaprajnapti, and Chandraprajnapti have detailed information on the apparent motion of sun, moon, planets, and stars. In this book, important features of Jain astronomy have been discussed and compared with Vedic astronomy and classical Hindu astronomy. The principle behind the division of sky in nakshatras has been explained and the span of nakshatras in Jain astronomy has been calculated. Based on the changing position of sun in the background of stars during solstices and equinoxes, the date of the astronomical observations described in Jain texts has been estimated. It is proposed that the zero point of Jain astronomy as well as Malava era coincides with the yogatara of Ashwini, Hamal, being at vernal equinox in 702 BCE.

Book Mathematics In Ancient Jaina Literature

Download or read book Mathematics In Ancient Jaina Literature written by Surender K Jain and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains selected articles presented in the ZOOM conference on History of Mathematics in Jain Literature, December 2020, and also contains articles invited by the editors on specific topics. The main objective for the conference was to bring to the attention of historians in mathematics that there is a plenty of literature written by monks and scholars in Jaina literature that contains elements of arithmetic, algebra and geometry, independent of discoveries by other cultures in the past. The talks and the discussions at the conference highlighted a need for a volume that can be recommended as a reference book for a course on History of Mathematics in the Departments of Mathematics and Education in colleges and universities. This is our hope that the present volume would fill up the gap on the lack of knowledge of past Jaina contributions.
